For years I used to wonder where Esther was, until I found out she didn't make her first appearance until episode 29. I never paid much attention to it. I guess Aunt Ethel was a trial. She absolutely had nothing on Lawanda Page. Granted, Beah Richards was a great actress, but she was too laid back. And her delivery was nothing near Page's.

I agree with you there,Aunt Esther was a whole lot better than Aunt Ethel who only made one appearance. Aunt Esther and Fred's go arounds were classic.

Oh! I thought Beah played Esther first but didn't work out! I didn't know she was a totally different character! Well Fred was mean to her for no reason if he had Esther to insult! Ethel was a sweet person from what I remember.

Never mind Aunt Ethel...a real treat would have been a throwdown between Esther and Aunt Hazel (Lillian Randolph, from "Here Comes the Bride, There Goes the Groom" from the first season)...and heaven help the fool ( Fred, Lamont, Melvin, etc.) stupid enough to get caught in the crossfire!!!
