Two Russian girls have been rescued after being kidnapped, imprisoned in a cellar and beaten and raped for three and a half years, resulting in three pregnancies, prosecutors have said.
The two, who were aged 14 and 17 when they disappeared on Oct. 2, 2000, were rescued Tuesday from a cellar in the town of Skopin, where a 53-year-old worker in a local machinery plant has been arrested and charged with their abduction.
"The suspect was holding the girls in a cellar at his house so he could commit violent sexual acts on them," senior deputy prosecutor Irina Sablina said.
"At the current time one of the freed hostages is in the eighth month of pregnancy. The older girl already had two children by him, giving birth to two boys in 2001 and 2003."
She said it was thought the suspect had abandoned the boys and neighbors had put them in a local orphanage. "We do not have precise information about where they are now," she said.
Russian police had initially opened a missing persons investigation but later declared the two were believed dead.
Russian television named the suspect as Viktor Mokhov. It said police were now searching for a 29-year-old woman thought to be his accomplice.
It showed the victims, faces blurred out, being helped out of the cellar, which was hidden by a removable block.
The two said that after three years the kidnapper began taking them out for short periods, giving them a chance to pass a note to a member of the public, who then raised the alarm.
"At some point Viktor let us out - he began to let us out in the autumn of 2003," one of the women said.
NTV said the man had posed as a taxi driver and had abducted the two after they went to a disco, possibly by drugging them.
Vladimir Tsypkov, acting head of the Interior Ministry in Ryazan region, said the man had a good reputation and even his family had not suspected what was going on beneath his garage.
