I have to give the slight edge to Mary Tyler Moore, even though I really like both series.
The reason Mary Tyler Moore got my vote is because I think Ted Baxter is one of the funniest characters in the history of television.

Too bad my local news isnt as interesting....

These are two of my favorites, but I'll give a slight edge to Bob.

While I love Susanne Pleshette, I never really got into Bob Newhart, and I don't know why, because many people like him.

So...iit's Mary for me. And what a joy it was watching MTM when it first came on in the 70s. Brilliant acting, writing, direction, production--just plain brilliant all the way around.

You put it wonderfully. MTM is one of those shows that's hard to come by. You can't normally have a brilliant cast and crew, wonderful writing, and creative storylines in every single episode, but MTM pulled it off.

I liked Bob a lot, but, MTM was a watershed show, a woman's issues show that didn't stick its tongue out at men (Well, other than Ted) and managed to be funny or poingnant and touching all at the right times. To this day, i'm sure many modern positive attitudes about working women and relationships came to light with this show.

^ Well said, Mikey! I feel a lot like Mary Richards, as I am a working single girl who is not far away from 30. () I can relate a lot more to that show now than I could watching it as a kid.

I picked Bob mostly because of the therapy group, plus I think the characters were funnier than the ones on MTM (not by much, though). Tomorrow I am going to watch Bob & the guys get hammered on Thanksgiving and order "moo goo goo goo"!!
