CANDICE BERGEN’S HIT SITCOM MURPHY BROWN TO JOIN
NICK AT NITE LINE-UP IN JANUARY 2005
New York, NY, May 5, 2004 – Acclaimed Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress Candice Bergen brings the world of broadcast journalism to Nick at Nite this January when the network launches the witty, hit comedy Murphy Brown. The show stars Bergen as a reporter for F.Y.I., a successful prime time news magazine show, whose friends and co-workers help her to find balance in her hectic life.
“Candice Bergin as Murphy Brown played one of the most original, distinctive female characters on television,” explains Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite. “The show also had one of the funniest, most-memorable teams of talent, and we are thrilled that it is joining the network.”
Created by Diane English, the comedy centers around life at F.Y.I, a weekly CBS news magazine show, and, more specifically, around Murphy Brown (Candice Bergen), a driven and sarcastic reporter who also happens to be a recovering alcoholic. Murphy’s demanding ways also play a part in a running gag on the series, as she was never able to hold on to any of her secretaries. Jim Dial (Charles Kimbrough) is the uptight senior anchor, and Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto) is her best friend and investigative reporter for F.Y.I. Always getting on Murphy’s nerves is Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford), a former Miss America whose primary assets are her looks and her energy, and rounding out the news team is the neurotic, young show producer, Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud), who is not always effective in getting respect from his staff. Phil (Pat Corley) owns the neighborhood bar and is a father figure to them all, and Eldin, (Robert Pastorelli) Murphy’s eccentric house painter, is always around and somehow never seems able to finish his work. Murphy Brown ran for 10 seasons and was plagued by controversy in 1992 when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the child alone. Vice President Dan Quayle blasted the decision, stating that it deteriorated family values, making the program a top news story. There were a number of real-life news personalities who appeared as themselves, including Connie Chung, Larry King, Linda Ellerbee, Walter Cronkite and many more.
NICK AT NITE CROWNS WILL SMITH WHEN
THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR JOINS
NICK AT NITE LINE-UP IN SEPTEMBER
New York, NY, May 5, 2004 – Grammy Award-winning rapper and celebrated film and television performer Will Smith settles into his throne as the Prince of Bel Air when the hilarious hit comedy, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, joins the Nick at Nite line-up beginning Monday, September 13, 2004. Amid the hilarious comedy of clashing cultures as the wealthy Banks family opens their home - and their checkbook - to their needy relative Will, the teen adapts easily to their indulgent lifestyle and reminds them that the simplest pleasures of family life can't be bought at any price.
“Will is an icon, and this “fish out of water” sitcom is completely fun and family-friendly – a perfect fit for Nick at Nite,” explains Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite.
Co-executive-produced by music legend Quincy Jones, the NBC comedy aired from 1990 to 1996 and focuses on Will (Smith), a teenager from a tough West Philadelphia neighborhood whose mother sends him to live with his wealthy relatives in Bel Air, California. It’s a tough adjustment for the teenager at first, whose streetwise ways don’t seem to fit in with their ornate mansion, luxurious cars and live-in butler. Will immediately clashes with Uncle Phillip (James Avery), a pompous, successful lawyer who was raised in a tough neighborhood much like Will’s and enjoys teaching him lessons and catching him on his crazy shenanigans. Aunt Vivian (Janet-Hubert Whitten and later Daphne Maxwell Reid) is the mediator between the two, and Geoffrey (Joseph Marcell), the always-proper butler, becomes one of Will’s closest allies. Among his cousins, Will enjoys teasing the preppy Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) and spoiled Hilary (Karen Parsons), while taking teenager Ashley (Tatyana M. Ali) under his wing and becoming her confidante. The brood expands with the birth of Nicholas “Nicky” Banks (Ross Bagley).
Other regulars on the hit show throughout its run are: Jazz (Jeff Townes{D.J. Jazzy Jeff}), Will’s off-beat best friend who brings a little soul into the Banks’ mansion; Jackie (Tyra Banks), Will’s ex-girlfriend from Philadelphia who complicates his life when he gets to college and Lisa (Nia Long), Will’s girlfriend to whom he is shortly engaged.

Wow...all of TVLand's shows will be airing simultaneously? Meaning: will they all create new episodes on a daily/weekly basis at the same time? If they do, that's horrible. The "TVLand Real Characters" and "Living in TVLand" things, will they be like "Inside TVLand" and only air on special occaision (like the show's anniversary)?
"ALF's Hit Talk Show" would be better suited for VH1 or maybe even E! I don't like the guests for the first two episodes (I thought it'd be interviews with classic TV stars...)
The TV cars special sounds interesting. I'm looking forward to it.
The Memorable Moments thing sounds GREAT. I'm definatly looking forward to that!
"Murphy Brown" and "Fresh Prince" are right up NAN's alley it seems, and I like FP so that's good. Not too interested in MB though.
I do have one question though....is TVLand even planning on acquiring anymore reruns throughout the Summer/Fall/Winter/2005 period? Last year's upfront post was filled with surprises (Fantasy Island, Carol, Green Acres, Flip) and I was shocked to see that all we have in this one is information on the original series and specials. Have you gotten any info on reruns and classic TV coming to TVLand yet?

No, these shows/specials are airing at those dates only (encores are possible at other times during the week which they air). I have no idea if TV Land plans on more than just one episode of ALF's Hit Talk Show, but for now it is just one episode of each of those. So almost every Wednesday at 10PM we get something different. Does that clear everything up?
Actually, the ALF's Hit Talk Show special also has two other guests, and they are classic TV: Henry Winkler and Ed McMahon. No idea why the press release didn't mention them! Maybe Ed will co-host with ALF for that special?
There is one drama coming to TV Land in January, but I'm not allowed to say what it is yet. Maybe they'll announce it in July, when TV Land and Nick@Nite do their summer TCA tour. It's sort of odd that the upfront presentation didn't mention Addams Family for June, I hear it's only a one year deal though, as is Who's the Boss? for Nick@Nite. And no mention this year of Flip Wilson, that starts in July.

Pavan 05-11-2004, 11:51 AM FATHERHOOD, NICK AT NITE'S FIRST ORIGINAL
ANIMATED SERIES, PREMIERES ON FATHER'S DAY, JUNE 20
Blair Underwood to Star in Animated Version of
Bill's Cosby's Best Seller, "Fatherhood"
New York, NY, May 5, 2004 - Nick at Nite's first original, animated series, Fatherhood, based on Bill Cosby's best selling book, "Fatherhood" will premiere on the network on Father's Day, June 20 at 9 p.m. (all times ET/PT). Starring Blair Underwood, the series will be executive produced by Cosby for Nick at Nite along with Charles Kipps (Little Bill, Cosby Mysteries) and David Brokaw (Little Bill). The series will then take its place in its regularly-scheduled timeslot of Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT beginning Tuesday, June 29 at 9 p.m. and repeat on Saturday at 10 p.m.
"We are thrilled and honored to join forces with America's most beloved and creative funnyman for the network's first original project," states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite. "We've been looking for an original property much like The Cosby Show that truly fits Nick at Nite's fun, family viewing brand. What better way to launch our first original series than with an original Cosby gem."
Each half-hour episode of the animated series will be a comedic yet insightful journey that features the challenges, life lessons and comical confusions of family life. Underwood will star as the voice of "Dr. Bindlebeep," a high school teacher, loving husband and father of three. Sabrina LeBeauf (The Cosby Show) stars as his wife, Norma. Jamie Mitchell is Supervising Producer and Director of the animated series. Serge Michaels serves as Art Director and Production Designer; Michele Weiss is Executive in Charge. Sal Maniaci, Vice President, Development & Production, TV Land and Nick at Nite is overseeing the project.
Underwood's work in film, television and on the stage has earned him critical acclaim as well as numerous awards including several NAACP Image Awards as Outstanding Actor. He starred in the feature films Full Frontal, Malibu's Most Wanted, Rules of Engagement and Deep Impact, as well as the hit television series Sex & the City. He will soon be seen starring in the independent feature film How Did It Feel? Written and directed by Daniel Faraldo, the character driven drama is based on his award-winning play of the same name and also stars Natasha Gregson Wagner.
"Fatherhood" (Doubleday/Dolphin) was published in May 1986 and became the fastest-selling hardcover book of all time. It remained for over half of its fifty-four weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List as #1. It has sold 2.6 million hardcover copies and 1.5 million paperbacks (published by Berkeley).
The following is the schedule of episodes for Fatherhood (all times ET/PT):
#1 "Take My Daughter Please..."
Premieres: Sunday, June 20 at 9 p.m.
Encores: Tuesday, June 22 at 9 p.m.
Dr. Bindlebeep and Norma are awakened in the middle of the night by a bear in their garage. As animal control officers set about removing the bear, they realize their car is gone. But just after reporting the car stolen, the two discover that their daughter Angie is missing from her room. The mystery is solved moments later when police officers return Angie to the house. It seems that high school lothario James had talked Angie into slipping out and taking the car. The incident propels Dr. Bindlebeep and Norma into a bout of parent peer pressure as they wonder whether their kids are doing as well as other kids.
#2 "It's A Dad, Dad World"
Premieres: Tuesday, June 29 at 9 p.m.
When Dr. Bindlebeep, Norma, and the kids go to visit Dr. Bindlebeep's father Lester and mother Louise, Dr. Bindlebeep quickly slips back into the role of his father's son. Worse yet, the elder Bindlebeep is a health and exercise fanatic who is in better shape that Dr. Bindlebeep will ever be. But then Dr. Bindlebeep's father is injured during a game of touch football. Faced with a father who is now acting like a child, Dr. Bindlebeep must once again assume the role of a father, this time to his own father.
#3 "There Goes the Neighborhood"
Premieres: Tuesday, July 6 at 9 p.m.
Dr. Bindlebeep gives great fatherly advice about not judging others and giving them a chance. However, when a new neighbor moves next door he just can't seem to hear his own guidance. Dr. Bindlebeep spies on the prospective neighbors and offers tainted information about the neighborhood.
#4 "The Lyin' King"
Premieres: Tuesday, July 13 at 9 p.m.
Dr. Bindlebeep prepares to give a speech about truth in the media that evening and uses his captive family audience at the breakfast table to practice the speech and to preach about truth in general. (Of course, Dr. Bindlebeep leaves out the fact that he sneaks donuts during his morning walks and therefore often lies to Norma by omission). In any event, the family is sent off with a lecture on telling the truth, but Roy apparently doesn't listen. Driven by his desire to see a PG-13 movie, the twelve year-old tells a series of lies that sink him deeper and deeper into deception. While he does manage to see the movie, he realizes the consequences of lying can be far greater than it might seem.
#5 "Privacy"
Premieres: Tuesday, July 20 at 9p.m.
Dr. Bindlebeep looks forward to a Saturday alone and some golden "privacy". However, all plans are disrupted when the Wrangler comes by to catch a pesky rodent, Elkins the noisy neighbor barges in to watch his NASCAR racing, Katherine comes home with her little friend Molly and Angie and her friends decide to practice 'singing' in the living room Dr. Bindlebeep erupts and demands everyone out of his house.
#6 "Dad's Birthday"
Premieres: Tuesday, July 27 at 9 p.m.
It's Dr. Bindlebeep's birthday and just to make sure he gets something nice, he slips each of the kids a little extra money for his gift. All seems well as the family heads off to the mall to shop for Dr. Bindlebeep's presents. But just as Angie is about to buy her father a very nice fountain pen to add to his pen collection, James -- the most popular guy in high school -- strolls into the store and says he'll take Angie to a concert that night if she buys the tickets. But Angie doesn't have enough money for a nice present and concert tickets. What a dilemma!

It's possible. If they were smart, like this. (Well if they were smart, they'd get rid of Full House altogether since it's ABC Family's most prized posession) But here's a good schedule using the shows they'll have in January of next year.
9:00PM Fresh Prince
9:30PM Full House
10:00PM Who's The Boss
10:30PM The Cosby Show
11:00PM Murphy Brown
11:30PM Roseanne

2:30AM The Cosby Show
3:00AM Murphy Brown
3:30AM Roseanne
4:00AM Cheers
4:30AM Wings
5:00AM
5:30AM
You could just rotate that ninth hour, or add another two repeats of two shows until you get a new show.
But knowing Nick@Nite, this will probably be their schedule by next January.
9:00PM Fresh Prince
9:30PM Full House
10:00PM The Cosby Show

I wouldn't mind if TV Land acquired such classics that haven't aired in awhile such as Mork and Mindy, The Lucy Show, and Dennis the Menace. It would be a treat to see these again.
A while back, Pß mentioned a drama show for January 2005, but it's a secret right now.

The only show I'll really watch on it is Full House. Roseanne is decent, but I don't usually watch it. I just can't stand how they just fill their lineup with old 'classics' from the 90s. You wanna make a bet of what the next few years will bring? Step by Step, The Nanny, Mad About you,Seinfield, Dharma & Greg, Friends, Frasier, heck I wouldn't be surprised if they added a sitcom that isn't even canceled yet. Not to meantion how they overplay their shows. I mean, The Cosby Show is on at least 4 times a night. Cheers is on 4 times a night and you know what, Cheer is on tvland too. I'm just fed up. The only thing that I liked about Nick at Nite(since they started to suck) was their block party summers, well I don't see them anymore. I know that we have tvland and all, but TVLand is juggling way too many shows back and forth while Nick plays the same 6. I just hate it.
factsoflife 06-27-2004, 07:15 PM Has anyone else noticed that they sometimes play the same episode 3 times in the same week! i've noticed the same episode of "Roseane" and "The Cosby Show" played in the same timeslot 3X in the same week. Also sometimes they'll play and ad that says "You're Watching a Full House Double Take" but instead 'Roseanne" comes on.

4:00 Murphy Brown
4:30 Murphy Brown
5:00 Full House
5:30 Full House
Now that looks realistic. The most realistic prediction I've seen. I think they might switch Who's the Boss/Cosby Show though, or double up on Cosby Show.
Pavan 07-23-2004, 04:38 PM This is not the Upfront releases, but they are releases from the TCA Summer Tour. Hunter joins the TV Land line-up in October and Fresh Prince joins the Nick@Nite line-up in Sept. And no, Huunter is NOT the drama that is coming in January, that is something else. Hopefully I can release that soon. Anyway, here are the TCA releases:

TV LAND GOES UNDERCOVER WHEN IT ADDS CRIME DRAMA “HUNTER” TO THE NETWORK IN OCTOBER 2004
Network to Air 48-Hour Marathon October 2-3
Los Angeles, CA, July 23, 2004 – TV Land, cable’s only 24-hour home to the best of everything television, will add the popular crime drama, “Hunter,” to the network’s line-up in October 2004 with a 48-hour marathon beginning October 2 at 6 a.m. ET/PT. The series, starring Fred Dryer and Stephanie Kramer as Los Angeles homicide detectives, ran on NBC for seven seasons.
“Crime-stopping dramas have always been an important part of television history,” states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite. “Hunter’s fast-paced, action-packed story-lines make this a welcome addition to TV Land’s line-up.”
“Hunter” which aired on NBC from 1984 to 1991 follows the lives of Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) and Dee Dee McCall (Stephanie Kramer), best friends and detectives with the L.A.P.D. who investigate bizarre homicides that always seem to take a twist. Tough and beautiful, McCall was nicknamed “the Brass Cupcake” by fellow detectives, and Hunter is a good cop…who just happens to come from a family of mobsters. The two save each other’s lives on a number of occasions and are a formidable duo. “Sporty James” (Garrett Morris) is a helpful police informant who always provides a bit of humor in this series, and Bernie (James Whitmore, Jr.) is an inept senior detective to whom Hunter is occasionally assigned and who often gives him aggravation.

NICK AT NITE EXPANDS ORIGINALS SLATE WITH ADDITION OF
“NICK AT NITE’S FAMILY FACE-OFF: HOLLYWOOD”
PREMIERING FALL, 2004
LOS ANGELES, CA, JULY 23, 2004 – Nick at Nite announced today that it will expand its slate of original programming with the November addition of a new reality series entitled, “Nick at Nite’s Family Face-Off: Hollywood,” in which six families compete to win an ultimate family vacation. The announcement was made today by Larry W. Jones, President of TV Land and Nick at Nite.
Nick at Nite recently began to program originals in earnest with the June 20th launch of “Fatherhood,” an animated series based on Bill Cosby’s best-selling book of the same name. The series, which stars Blair Underwood and Sabrina LeBeauf, has caught on with viewers and dovetails into Nick at Nite’s original programming strategy of creating shows that meet what the network refers to as the “Four F’s” criteria: programming that is Family-Friendly, Funny and Familiar. Nick at Nite’s newest original unveiled today will complement the network’s hit roster of proven modern classic sitcoms including “Roseanne,” “The Cosby Show,” “Full House” and the September addition of “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” among others.
“Nick at Nite’s Family Face-Off: Hollywood,” which is slated to premiere in November, will pit six families against one another as they compete to complete a variety of tasks -- many of which are TV-themed -- to win the ultimate family vacation. Each one-hour episode will end with the elimination of one family until the sixth episode, in which the two remaining families vie for the top prize. All six episodes highlight the families in a race from Southern California beaches to backlots, from hangars to hotels, and from mansions to makeup rooms -- begging for autographs, posing for photos with celebrities and participating in outrageous stunts to win the prize.
“Nick at Nite has hit full stride with both our popular acquired programming and originals like ‘Fatherhood’,” explains Jones. “We can now capitalize on our status as the Number One cable network among adults to branch out into more originals, like ‘Nick at Nite’s Family Face-Off: Hollywood’ which is designed to offer unique, fun original programming that the whole family can enjoy.”

NICK AT NITE CROWNS WILL SMITH WHEN
THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR JOINS
NICK AT NITE LINE-UP IN SEPTEMBER
LOS ANGELES, CA, JULY 23, 2004 – Grammy Award-winning rapper and celebrated film and television performer Will Smith settles into his throne as the Prince of Bel Air when the hilarious hit comedy, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, joins the Nick at Nite line-up beginning Monday, September 13, 2004 with a week-long marathon before airing Sun-Thurs at 10pm and a full hour at midnight ET/PT.

I'm not much of a drama fan, but it sounds interesting.
I liked Fred Dryer on his many Cheers appearances.... and Garret Morris has always been a fave.
factsoflife 07-23-2004, 11:24 PM Is Murphy Brown still coming in January 05? any other shows expected for 05?
Moonlit_Suburb 07-23-2004, 11:26 PM A reality show on Nick@Nite?!?! ASININE!!!
Pavan 08-12-2004, 03:24 PM RE: Hunter on TV Land ... it has been delayed until November 6-7 now, instead of October 2-3 ...
Pavan 08-13-2004, 09:58 AM The press releases should be out later today but it seems like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have already leaked some info out. Nick@Nite will be adding three shows each in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
Nick@Nite and TBS/WGN will share the cable TV rights to Home Improvement in a new six year deal which begins in Fall 2007. Home Improvement is distributed by Buena Vista Television.
Nick@Nite also has picked the shared cable rights for Mad About You (shared with Oxygen, in a five year deal with shared fees of $32.8m). Mad About You kicks off in March 2006 on both Nick@Nite and Oxygen. Nick@Nite can air it anytime between 8 p.m. to 9 a.m., while Oxygen can air it anytime between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Currently the show airs on Lifetime and it will be losing the rights to the show when it comes to Nick@Nite/Oxygen.
Nick@Nite has gotten the exclusive rights to The Nanny (5-yr deal, estimated at $34.8 million in fees). The Nanny starts airing on Nick@Nite in February 2009. Currently it airs on Lifetime and is high rated. By 2009, Lifetime will not be airing the show anymore as Nick@Nite has exclusive rights.
spunkygirl 08-13-2004, 01:56 PM  Wow thanks Pav
any idea if they are going to drop any shows like Wings, or Who's the Boss? next year?
Wow they're getting alot of the shows TBS is airing
I was thinking about that the other day wondering if Home Improvement would come to N@N, I thought the Nanny would be alot more years off though :)

The three shows are still a while away--with Mad About You being the closest and that's still 1 year and a half away. Too hard to tell what will be on and off then. I doubt Wings and Who's the Boss? will still be around then anyway. Who's the Boss? expires at the end of May 2005 and I am almost positive they won't renew. The Nanny is still a half a decade away -- so no point in trying to figure out what will be the schedule then.
factsoflife 08-13-2004, 02:10 PM Wow i firgured Home Improvement would come to N@N sooner or later and i was hoping that The Nanny would too, but i had no idea about Mad About You... thats just weird. Why does N@N bother to pick up shows like Whos The Boss for a single year? wouldn't it make more sense to pick-up long-term deals?

Those are good choices, they will fit in well with N@N, I've got a feeling by then N@N will be airing only 90's sitcoms. I would love to see Boy Meets World on N@N someday ;)
Thanks Pav, I had a feeling they wouldn't keep it, maybe some other network will pick up WTB? if they don't :)
barwars 08-13-2004, 04:01 PM Home Improvement/Mad About You.... good picks.
The Nanny.... I'm not a fan, but I will give the show another chance.
Pavan 08-13-2004, 04:07 PM I really don't think they should have gotten Mad About You or The Nanny ... I know they are years away still, but I think they should have gone after late 80s/early 90s shows first. Family Matters, Perfect Strangers (air the entie series; last season hasn't been seen forever), Step by Step, Hogan Family, etc
Home Improvement sort of fits, I guess.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see Mad About You doing that well on N@N, I'm probably wrong, does it do well in syndication? :)
I would love to see the Hogan Family again, and Perfect Strangers. I think Family Matters would be a good fit for N@N in about 3 or 4 years.
Unfortunately N@N seems to only care about ratings any more :(

I think that's all they've ever cared about.
Newer shows get better ratings.
Do you think Nick at Nite or TV Land is planning to get the rights to other sitcoms on lifetime like Designing Woman or the Golden Girls. (I shoud'nt say Nick at Nite beacause show like those are consider "ancient" by them).
factsoflife 08-13-2004, 05:06 PM Both shows would be good fits and would appeal to N@N's more adult audicene. Also both shows get huge ratings at Lifetime so its possible. I wonder if N@N will ever try to get Fraser. thats certinly a modern tv classic. much more so than The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.
I'd also like to see Blossom at N@N it would fit in w/Full House. and i think they should move Sabrina The Teenage Witch to the 800 stimeslot right before Full House it'd be perfect.

I don't think Mad About You did that hot for Lifetime (it barely airs now). And on locals it wasn't a huge hit either.
And to answer someone else's question on Designing Women and Golden Girls, it is possible, but I'd really doubt that Lifetime would not renew Golden Girls. Then again, I'm surprised Lifetime didn't try to renew the contract for The Nanny starting in 2009. Frasier has no chance in the near future, Lifetime just made a deal for it starting in March 2006 and it was huge and no sharing it seems. Blossom hasn't been seen anywhere in years.
factsoflife 08-13-2004, 08:13 PM MAY was a big syndicated hit when it first got syndicated, and then Lifetime bought the rights to it and for awhile it did really good but the ratings started to slip shortly after that.
i was just dreaming about Blossom.
barwars 08-13-2004, 08:16 PM Its so weird hearing about shows coming in 2009.... chances are that by then The Nanny will be completely on DVD.
Same for Home Improvement.
As for Mad About You.... still waiting for Season 3....
factsoflife 08-14-2004, 12:48 AM so nothing new in 2008? and what about 2005, other than MB anything else new? Any chance we'll see Kate and Allie land at N@N, i know its older than these shows but would fit perfectly in at N@N.

They don't announce everything that in advance (Mad About You and The Nanny are huge deals, a lot of money spent there). I'm sure at least something else will be added between Murphy Brown (Jan 2005) and Mad About You (March 2006).
To my knowledge these are the highest N@N spendings: Cheers (est. 75 million), The Nanny (34.8 million), Mad About You (32.8 million) and Three's Company (25 million).
I'm not sure how much they spent on Roseanne, Cosby Show, and Full House. Full House and Fresh Prince might have been cheap, since it was an option from the WB deal.
factsoflife 08-14-2004, 01:12 AM can some one tell me why it is that Cheers airs on both N@N and Tv Land? why should it, its not fair to air it on both because thoes are timeslots that another show could have. and hasn't Cheers been on N@N for a long, long time now?

The same reason TC airs on both -- they must bring in good ratings.

Pav, do know how long N@N has the rights to The Cosby Show, Roseanne, and Murphy Brown for?

can some one tell me why it is that Cheers airs on both N@N and Tv Land? why should it, its not fair to air it on both because thoes are timeslots that another show could have. and hasn't Cheers been on N@N for a long, long time now?
It's been there since 2002........I don't think that's a long, long time.

I think Pav said that they have Cosby til 2006, and Roseanne came around the same time as Full House, and Nick@Nite has Full House until 2007, so im guessing Roseanne would be around 2007 too, and i dont know about Murphy Brown.
Im not completley sure, though, Pav will definatley know :)

Actually.... 2001.
Although, after seeing Pav's post I realize why Cheers airs so much -- it cost a f*ckin fortune!!

I agree! If I spent that much on anything it better be in frequent use.

Thanks! I bet N@N will dump most of these shows before then anyway. As much as I love Roseanne it seems to be their new Cosby and to add to it Roseanne airs a lot on Oxygen as well. I guess it's the privilege you get when your N@N's highest rated show.

I think Roseanne is a 5 year term, but I'm not 100% sure. So that would make it through fall 2008 (it started in fall 2003). Cosby Show is tricky, I know TBS has it until fall 2005 (or fall 2006?), but I'm not sure about Nick@Nite since they started it like 2-3 years later. No idea about Murphy yet.
storrs19 09-23-2004, 01:24 AM As for the drama mentioned some time ago that is coming to TVLand in 2005, I sure wish it would be one of the following:
Hawaii Five-O
Kojak
Cannon
Actually, I would like to see all of these, but with TVLand I'm not holding my breath. It will probably be some suck a__ show from the 1980's.

Why was the price for Cheers much higher than the other shows?
slackermonkey 12-24-2004, 04:07 AM It's one of the longest-running, most popular and most awarded shows of its time.

well, 3's company is another long-running, most popular & awarded shows in television which broke ground but yet it's price in lower than Cheers. I still don't get it. shouldn't 3's company cost just as much as Cheers?

Well CHRS aired for 11 years (1982-1993) and TC only had 8 seasons (1977-1984), and CHRS won many more awards I believe.

You're right, in fact in its time Three's company was not really considered ground-breaking at all, in fact it was really thought of as "jiggle tv", in otherwords, just a bunch of good looking people, acting all sexy without any substance. critics tore it apart. John Ritter did win an Emmy, a big surprise, but thats pretty much the only major award it ever won. It wasn't until years later that the show became a huge syndication hit and was labeled a classic.

True, but Three's Company did better in the ratings both originally and in syndication, than Cheers (though the Cheers series finale is still one of the top sitcom finishes of all time). The only reason Cheers got that big of a contract was two reasons -- its first cable deal and it was critically acclaimed. Three's Company and MASH were the only top 10 syndicated hits for over 10 years -- both had a bigger contract for its second syndication cycle than its first. The combination of Three's Company & Three's a Crowd is in the top 10 sitcoms in the ratings of all-time in their original ABC run.
