I suppose it depends how old you are. Most (I'm not saying all so don't quote me) of the male Cher fans you run into in their teens or 20's generally seem to be gay. But I've seen a lot of straight men over 30 who like her. I remember when I went to her concert, expecting it to be loaded with cute 20something gays (since they make it such a stereotype that ALL of Cher's fanbase is), and 70% of the audience were old married couples and over-30 housewifes, LOL.

Nope, I don't think it is.

well, I noticed you state you're British on your profile. I think with a lot of British guys, it's "safer" to be straight and like quote-on-quote "gay icons" because British guys seem to have less problems with masculinity/femininity. I have a friend who is British and 21 who likes Madonna and Barbra Streisand... I was for sure he was gay, but yet he's straight. British guys have less issues about "I have to make sure I look manly so people won't question my sexuality" than Americans do.

 That's exactly what I was thinking....(British guys rule. :) )

Oh and to answer the question, I think it's perfectly fine for a guy to like artists like Cher, whether they are from the U.S. or wherever.

I've never known any gays who like Cher (and no, it's not gay to like her), but I've met a couple who like the kind of musical performers associated with gay fan bases.

Just once I'd like to meet a gay guy who doesn't like dance music. Just once, I'd like to meet a gay guy who actually despises Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, and Bette Midler. Just once, I'd like to meet a gay guy who digs Jethro Tull and plays air guitar to Led Zeppelin. It would be like meeting a polite Frenchman or a teetotaling Irishman!

then you'd like my friends John and Rob. They're a couple. John is the older one and he is into Beatles, Zeppelin, Kiss and AC/DC (but he also likes disco and techno as well), and Rob is a devoted metalhead (but he also likes Janet). Neither of them own any Barbra, Cher or Madonna cd's.

Because if a guy likes music produced by someone with an XX chromosomal pattern, then he's attracted to males only. that's right folks. i suppose i'm a lesbian because i like more male artists than female artists. oh wait i like both, so i must be bi!

I wouldn't say it's that at all. Cher is famous for being over-the-top and outspoken, two qualities that are very popular and associated with gay men. It doesn't hurt at all that she's dabbled in "gay-friendly" musical genres such as techno and disco (as opposed to something like hip hop which is notoriously not gay-friendly). Plus the fact that her daughter is a lesbian and she's very adament about PFLAG has helped make her a gay icon. As well as the fact that Cher is a survivor, and gay men love and identify with survivors. Things like that add to the stereotype that "only gay men love Cher". It is not that she's a female. If a guy said he liked the girl from Evanescence or Courtney Love, someone isn't going to automatically make the "oh, so he's gay" judgment the way they would over someone like Cher, Barbra or Bette.

I have loved Cher ever since 1965 when she was with Sonny. She was just too cool for words! :D I even named my cat after her at the time!

Well, being a gay man myself, I admit I love Cher, as for Bette, Judy Garland and Liza, YUCK! Barbra Streisand is okay. Sure, I love dance music, not techno, but real dance music and disco, but I ALSO love classic rock, Beatles, Jethro Tull, CCR, Led Zeppelin. I feel that I love a whole variety of music.

I think it's quite ridiculous, that these stereotypes exist. Sorry, but no one is going to tell me what kind of music I should like and listen too. Everyone has different tastes and I think TV/films and the media just further the continued stereotype that all gay guys love dance music and Cher (case in point Will & Grace, not that I’m against that show, but it does further stereotypes)

Don't let people dictate your likes and dislikes!

high five with everything you said. I agree and identify with what you said completely. Except I do like Bette somewhat, more as an actress than a singer though.

I do like real dance music, but not really a techno fan. I suppose the stereotype with dance music and gay men is that 90% of the dance artists out there are either gay men, or are women who are extremely gay-friendly and play pride benefits and tour clubs, etc... Much like rap is a genre stigmatized because almost every major rapper has used the word that begins with F in their songs, and you have people like 50 Cent and Ja Rule who are unapologetically homophobic (and they are NOT using religious beliefs as their excuse to dislike gays, just a "this is offensive to my machismo" exterior), dance music is the complete reverse. Many of the dance artists purposely court gay listeners.
