View Full Version : Could they have really gotten by with just 2 bartenders and 1 waitress?
McFly121 05-04-2004, 06:17 PM Funny how they never replaced Diane with another waitress after she left. Even if it was a non-regular cast member in the background to give it more realism. Even after Sam sold the bar they only had Woody, Carla and that guy Wayne. Sam replaced Wayne and no one else was hired to help out Carla and Woody. Of course, Cheers was not packed every night, but still had decent sized crowds.
WilCap 05-04-2004, 06:20 PM yea, you are right on that.
Would you like to join the Survivor game
Chambers 05-04-2004, 06:23 PM please join us! you can be norm or somebody - we'll fill you in on everything - just walk in.
MaydayMalonesGirl 05-04-2004, 07:22 PM I've noticed that. Even in the Diane years, there are certain scenes where no one is working. In the episode Everyone Imitates Art I noticed that during one scene Diane was reading through books, Carla was on her trip to Memphis, and Sam wasn't there. So was Woody bartending and waiting tables at the same time? It seemed a little weird.
barwars 05-04-2004, 08:03 PM Even if EVERYBODY worked at once.... they're still understaffed.
FamilyTiesGOP 05-04-2004, 09:45 PM A bar would probably go broke very quickly if it were run like Cheers. Norm alone would break a real bar.
Brian Damage 05-04-2004, 11:27 PM I always wondered that.
McFly121 05-05-2004, 11:40 AM Brian, Trish is lookin' mighty fine there, :).
Mayday, a very good point about Diane often reading. I was just watching the one where Carla's mother had "the dream" and takes Sam to her mother's. Only Woody is left to take care of the place. Trying to think of an ep where Sam, Woody, and Carla were all out of the bar at once (during business hours of course).
But Cheers had a few unrealistic bar things about it. Anyone who's been in a bar or club knows you have to SHOUT over everyone else to be heard and there's far more activity for waitresses and barkeeps.
Janice 05-06-2004, 02:04 AM I tended bar in Boston and other places for a few years, and there is no way that a bar the size of Cheers could get by with just two employees.
Two bartenders and two waitresses....possibly, but they would really be moving, and not socializing like they do on Cheers. I guess in the world of Sitcomland, we have to suspend disbelief and logic. :)
...and this isn't just any old bar, this is CHEERS :)
CheersChild4life 05-06-2004, 08:30 AM In Tv land they're never understaffed!
Dr. John Becker 05-06-2004, 05:57 PM Maybe that's why Carla was so angry all the time. She had NO HELP!!;)

Sorry to bump a thread that's a few months old by now, but I was just looking through some old posts and wanted to comment on this one!
I was watching "Dark Imaginings" the other night, and no one seemed to be taking care of the bar! Judging by the look outside Sam's hospital window, it wasn't early morning or anything, and it had to at least have been during visiting hours, so it wasn't really late, after the bar would have been closed (closing time is what? 2am, sometimes midnight at the earliest on there?) and yet, he was in the hospital, Carla and Woody were visiting him, and just as Carla left, Diane came in.
In "From Beer To Eternity" they actually adressed that Diane and Woody closed the bar to go to the bowling alley. But that reminds me that sometimes it seems one person is in charge of the whole bar. For example, earlier in that episode when everyone came in from playing baseball, it looked like it was all left to Diane. And in "An Affair of the Heart" in season 2, Carla was on a date with Hank when Sam and Diane left to go stop them before they had sex, the whole bar was left to Coach.
TV for ya, huh? ;)
