What do you people think of teenage girls who get pregnant? Each year I've been in high school, at least two girls were pregnant. This year about 3 or 4 that I know of are pregnant, including a girl who is in my grade. I have known her for years and she is extremely nice. She always talks to me about the baby [she is having a girl] and she showed me her sonograms and today she let me touch her tummy. She seems very excited about it, which is all well and good - but she's so young. I don't know how she can handle a child of her own. I am not judging her at all, but it's crazy.

What do you all think?

I think its becoming to be too common and it seems like its not taken as seriously. I know that 'accidents happen', but if you kept your damn legs closed to you atleast finished school, you might be able to provide a better life for the child. When I graduated, I found out that.. *counts* 7 girls had babies. 7!! Thats craziness.

That's a pretty touchy subject. I REALLY frown upon teens having sex in high school. Sure, they can date and stuff, but they should REALLY wait until they're done with high school and working a steady job before they get pregnant.


The way I see it, teens' education is MUCH MUCH MUCH more important than having sex...It's just not worth it to get pregnant when you're only 14/15/16. You're still a KID, so why do you want to grow up so quickly? No. You need to just enjoy it. You have the rest of your life to be an adult, so don't hurry. Getting your high school diploma should be your number one priority when you're a kid. :)

When I graduated in 2003, SIX girls in my GRADE had already been pregnant. The last one was still pregnant when we graduated, and she looked like she was ready to explode. Think about that when I tell you about how many girls got pregnant in the class of 2004 - ONE. JUST ONE!!!!! They make my class look like major sluts. And it's true. =/

Well I don't agree with kids in HS having sex but everybody's entitled to one mistake. There have been teen moms who have finished school and are able to take care of the kids. It just really irks me when some of these young girls go on to have numerous children with different fathers, never finish HS and end up on ADC and WIC for the rest of their lives and their children grow up and do the same thing.

DOUBLE DITTO. My sis's BEST friend from junior high got pregnant when they were both in 10th grade. I don't remember if she ever finished high school- I think she did- but she also went on to have a 2nd kid by a different father before she hit 21. That's just too young to be having kids. :(

Because of what her best friend did, they drifted apart big-time and aren't friends anymore. That should NOT have had to happen. =/

I dont see anything wrong with having kids without being married.

But having kids when your a teenager -- sucks for the teenager, and the kid.
Neither get a normal childhood.

I can't feel for teenagers who get pregnant. Personally, I think all that stuff should be saved for marriage.

I kind of find that all to be a bunch of bull -- i mean, people HAD to have kids before marriage was invented.... so its not like a "new age" thing.
Marriage isnt for everyone, but it doesnt mean people shouldnt have kids.

But as a teenager, as I already -- no, its irresponsible.

I say sucks for them. I do feel bad for the kids though in a lot of cases (I did not say all). The babies aren't usually made out of love with teens (considering they're accidents). And Daddy is less likely to be in the baby's life since they probably won't get married.

My cousin got pregnant when she was 17. She wasn't married, in fact, for a few weeks she didn't know who the father was. She had like 5 possible guys. :eek:

Anyway... she had a baby girl in July 2002. The "father" has nothing to do with the baby and she only recently started getting child support from him.

I think it's...unfortunate if a teenage girl gets pregnant but I would never judge them harshly b/c of that. They don't need me to judge them. If a teenage girl is pregnant you know most of the time they're beating themselves up inside over it. I wouldn't make fun, or spread rumors, I'd just hope the best for them. There's a girl in my school whose pregnant and one morning she brought in her sonograms and stuff, and she seems proud of her baby. I feel bad for her, but she seems like she's handling it, and she has a lot of support, so all I'm gonna do is wish her the best. I tend to keep an open-mind about most things.

Wow. On Maury, there was a girl who had 15 guys on and they all failed. 15 guys?! Meangya.. do her legs know how to close?! But she was a lot older, but still. I think its aweful for the men (not all) to completely ignore the girl and have nothing to do with the baby. Sure, neither of them even wanted it, but if he's man enough to screw her, he's man enough to take care of the baby which he made. And teenage sex probably isnt even that great. Given, I never did it.. but what 15 year old knows what is good and whats not? If theyre that curious they show go try it on themselves or something and keep the STD's and pregnancy scares away. -.-

If they were smart and used protection there wouldn't be a problem. Girls now a days are too willing to give it up and it's sick. I could never sleep with someone I haven't been with at least a year or two and I had to know that he loved me and that I loved him. I don't let people pressure me into doing anything if I don't want to do it and if he's mad TS he can get lost if he doesn't like it.

Yeah...I think all that really matters is that you should FEEL naturally ready to have kids by the time you're out of college and financially stable...That way, you can provide for your child AND not have to go on welfare or anything like that. You're just not ready to have a kid when you're still a kid, period. :( I heard about this 12 year old girl who got pregnant- I mean, 12?!?! She wasn't even a teen! When I was 12, I wasn't even thinking of sex.

Well, I don't agree that it's wrong for teenagers to have sex. Just as long as they are careful and realize what they are doing and are responsible about it than it's fine. But I don't know, when you have 12 year old girls doing it with a different guy every week or a 15 year old who is stupid and refuses to use contraceptives, that's when it's wrong. Girls who get pregnant because they sleep around and have unprotected sex are asking for it. So many people think that teens are stupid when it comes to sex, but that's not true. Plenty of teenagers are careful about it. Don't let some STD infected boy or pregnant 13 year old make you judge teenagers as a whole.

When it comes to teenage pregnancy, I find it sad. In some cases, I feel bad for the mother because a lot of times, people are careful about it but sometimes accidents do happen. And I feel bad for the child because you don't know how it's going to be raised or if the mother will be able to care for it. I just can't imagine being so young and having to care for another human life. You aren't even out of school. You're still a kid yourself. It changes your entire life. Some teenagers have the baby and manage to care for it while building a steady future for themselves. But others just totally neglect the child and end up trashy and poor and that just sucks.

All of the girls that I know who have been or are pregnant seem to be happy about it. I know one girl who was the quiet one in school, seemed perfect, mother was a teacher, got excellent grades, had a promising future. Then she got pregnant and she was so ashamed that she wore huge baggy hooded sweatshirts and sweat pants and denied that she was pregnant. You could tell that she was carrying a child because it was so obvious, but she kept saying that she wasn't. One week she was saying, "I'm not pregnant! That's not true, I swear." But then the next week she was absent from school and a baby was born. And I know that she is very happy and loves her daughter more than anything, and I'm sure she takes wonderful care of it. So you see, some teens handle it well and others don't. I know so many of them who are proud of it and show off their sonograms and wear cute little outfits that show off their swelling bellies. That's all fine, but they need to realize that there is a baby growing inside of them and that once it's born, everything changes. And a lot of them don't and it's horrible. Poor children who are brought into this world by awful, careless parents.

Teenage girls who get pregnant are WEAKMINDED. Does that answer your question.

There have been 2 or 3 a year during high school, and one girl in my class got pregnant in 6th grade. She was 12 - her parents have helped her raise the baby and been really supportive, she and her daughter come to school sometimes to visit people and she's working on getting her GED. It's messed up her life a lot education-wise, but all in all she was lucky her parents have been so supportive.
Personally I plan on waiting until marriage, but it's not realistic to expect that everyone or even a majority of people will. I think that if youre going to have sex you have to be ready to face something like that.

I'm not really for it, but if it happens, it happens. As much info as there is in school or in the media, I'd assume most girls have at least enough brain cells to know that sex can lead to babies. So if they get pregnant, that's their deal, not mine. I just hate seeing any baby born to any woman, young or old, who does want it and ends up abandoning it, or raises it like crap. That makes me sad.

But I had a friend in HS who had a baby...and she's a good mom. So some girls can handle it, some can't.

It's still a good idea to consider EDUCATION first and foremost in your life...You can definitely wait to have kids. :)

Sourbabie, I went to school with a girl a grade ahead of me who was like that. Tall, thin and quiet. I was a junior when she was a senior and she was already a few months pregnant at the beginning of that school year...I didn't even know she was pregnant, because she wore baggy clothes and always kinda sat hunched over in her seat...Even when she was walking, I couldn't tell a thing. So I was really surprised when, suddenly she was gone, and then my teacher announced to my class that the girl had had her baby...Jeez.

I know she came back to finish out the year - she only had a semester left, because she had her baby two weeks before Xmas. Still, education = first, kids = later :)

If I ever have kids, I will stress this point to them, as my mom did with my sis and I when we were both in high school. My mom told us both that if we EVER became sexually active, we were to use birth control (no-brainer) and if we got pregnant - NO WAY - we would NOT keep the baby. And it worked on us both. :)

Sorry but I think I have you beat. In my class we had over 10 girls get pregnant by senior year.

Birth Control is never 100% effective. People need to remember that. But as an Old Geezer myself...old enough to be many of your parents, I say kids are having sex out of curiousity and disregarding the consequences. And it can happen in ALL families, not just in under-educated ones. The sexual urge is the most powerful of all human urges, placed in us so the we can procreate and create more people. It's a hard thing to ignore. No pun intended...:D

Yep. I lived in a town of 7000 people altogether- 700 students went to the middle school and an additional 700 went to the high school...That usually worked out to 175 per grade. My class had 180 students when we started 9th grade in 1999, and 135 by the time I graduated in 2003. There were a variety of reasons- kids moved away, dropped out, spent their senior year studying aboard, etc (One girl in my grade died between our sophomore/junior years in 2001)...but the most common was dropping out. =/ I think the graduation ceremony was 1 to 1½ hours long when I graduated.

JEEZ. 762 in your class? 4500 all together? I'm imagining your high school yearbook...At least 400-500 pages long :eek:

When my brother graduated in 1998, (he lived with our dad and I lived with our mom) his class had a total of 410 people. I remember going to his graduation - I don't even remember how long it took for everybody to get their diplomas.

Ha. My graduation class was barely over 50. Moose Lake, MN - Pop. 2000.

None got pregenant while in school, but I've heard about one girl getting pregnant recently.

Pre-marital sex is very ok indeed. For responsible adults. Not children. And by children I mean anyone under 18. I'd stretch that to age 21, buy it's not realistic. Many people should not *marry* before they're 30...because like Oprah says..no one knows real life until around that time. They don't understand how difficult it is to be an adult. The deaths of parents, the bills, the house, the bank, the credit cards, the running of a busines. It's right to try not to grow up too fast. Yes, the yearbook is thick, without looking at it I can't tell you for sure how many pages, I don't have it here at college, it's at home, so I can't look that up. I remember thinking it was too expensive, but I felt I needed to buy it anyway. It cost $40 dollars. All the pictures except for the seniors, were in black and white. I remember having to stand in line and wait to have my picture taken for the yearbook for my senior year, it seemed to take so long to get through the line.
What's interesting is I go to a univ. that has approx. 12.000 students and I don't know how many seniors there are, but when I graduate in Dec. apparently it's not going to take any longer than it did when I graduated in high school. I figured it wouldn't, but I guess just like high school, there are more freshmen than seniors.

I graudated in 2002 and we had about 2000 kids at our school and my yearbooks every year were $35-40. The last year was a little more though because of the special senior stuff. $65 is outrageous!

I think teens should be taught proper methods of birth control. We don't have sex education or anything at my school, but the seniors have to watch a video at the end of the year that talks about diseases that you get from sex, which is probably just used to scare people from having sex, imho, but by senior year, for a lot of people, it's too little too late anyway. I think sex-ed should start in 7th or 8th, or earlier. I know before I transferred to this school district, we started in 4th and 5th grade (just about the basics)...

There is no birth control other than sterilization that offers 100% protection. And even THAT can reverse itself in the case of vasectomy. Even birth control devices in the hands of adults can be risky; the temptation to skip using a condom (because it just feels better) or diaphragm ("I'm too tired to go get it from the drawer, gel it up, and insert it now...") is there no matter HOW old you are. These decision in the hands of "hot" teenagers with raging hormones only augments the risk. You cannot stop the sexual drive, unless you separate the sexes totally. And of course, that is not feasible, lest it lead to anti-social behavior and of course, lonliness.

Mine is, too (apparently). OMG...it's sickening. They're award-winning and get tons of awards every year, yet they can't even put the captions in the correct place and they for this matter cannot even label WHICH picture it belongs to...Like "Above Left: blah blah blah"...it just looks like "blah blah blah" and it doesn't match the picture next to it, so I have to search all over the page for the pic it belongs to. :o

Totally agree with you. I'm not sure how many girls have been pregnant in our HS- but the town I live in practically invented teenage pregnancy. It's sad too because most of the people with children do raise them irresponsible and just sit around, don't try getting back on track and stay on welfare the rest of their lives.

We are having a growth/development movie in health and it covers the sperm/egg cell reproduction and a bit about sex. I don't think it is good to have sex until you are at least 20.

LOL..ok, that's a good attitude. But I can tell you, in another couple years, it's ALL you're going to be thinking about. ;) The choice is that you don't act rashly on your phyisical impulses until you're old enough to deal with the consequences. And that includes not just becoming a Daddy at 14 or 16 but getting:

Genital Warts

Chlamydia

AIDS

VD

Herpes (the gift that never goes away...)

Just to name a FEW nasty things.... Sex is not for babies! :cool:

I personally do not believe in premarital sex. However, I think if people are going to have sex before marriage, they should at least be old enough and mature to handle the consequences that may come with it...something teens are not typically capable of handling.

I agree. There's nothing "over the top" in this thread. And I see there are some of us Old Farts here....so we know what we're talking about whether we have kids your age or not. Now about that person who said she was having sex since age 8....that truly frightens me on many levels:

1) She is lying to impress someone, or get attention

2) She's been "Playing" at sexual activities since was 8, but has not had *intercourse*

3) Someone messed with her against her will at age 8. She's announcing this violation against her very matter of factly...perhaps crying for help inside...

I know some girls become sexually "mature" (as in have their menarche) at aged 9...but sexual desire at that age? I dunno. I am suspect....:(

personally, I think it is alright to have sex before marriage and if you are in high school thats fine...seriously, a good amount of girls I know take the pill or on the patch (not smoking one...birth control one) From a personal standpoint, if I happen to find the guy I am totally in love with, I wouldnt rule out having sex, but if the loving feeling isn't there, then I am not going to go looking for it. Teenage pregancey isn't such a problem in my town, I think that the most class would have is like 2 girls pregeant but hey I live in suburbia
