I'm a sort of newbie to Cheers, watching reruns on Paramount Comedy, I've become hooked and love the show! :)
Can anyone tell me about Melville's, the restaurant upstairs from the bar? It's a sea food place right? In the show's run did we ever get to see inside it? Who owned it (did we ever see them)? What kind of clientelle it has? Did any of the Cheers gang ever go there?
Probably a weird topic but I'm always curious about the mysterious aspects of sitcoms. :)
You'll see inside Melville's later on in the series run. It's basically your average upscale restaurant. A new uptight owner, John Allen Hill (played by the late Keene Curtis), makes his first apperance in the ninth season.

yea, Melville's is a seafood restaurant.
in the early seasons, a coat and tie were required to enter it. (coach followed this rule to a t...lol), but then, famous restaurant entrepenuer John Allen Hill became the owner. (we dont know who before then, and this was in the mid- rebecca yrs..forget when, season 8/9??) he and sam instantly hated each other, as did carla, tho they were also lovers. john apparently owned cheers' back room and bathrooms, and lingered that over sam.
the clientele was more or less upper scale Cheers clientele (mostly any Cheers member, dressed good enough, could simply walk upstairs and not b too out of place, at least by season 10/11).
we have seen the inside (the "outside" is shown in almost every exterior shot. Melville's door is next to the "Cheers" sign above the steps down to the bar). we didnt see it until, once again, mid rebecca yrs (before or after John Hill took over??). it was in the finale too.
we have seen sam, rebecca, woody and diane actually inside, eating. we have seen coach (and cliff, and norm maybe?) walk up the stairs from cheers. i am sure carla has walked up too. also, Vera (norms wife) worked there for a short time, as a coat check lady, but was fired by John Hill for spending all of her time looking thru a hole in the floorboards to watch Norm.
i think thats it...
hope this helps

Thanks for the replies AKA and FOLN@NFan! You really know your Cheers stuff. :)
Now I need to run along and order those DVDs so I can get into it from the beginning.

I liked the episode when the bathroom at Cheers wasn't working so the patrons had to wait in line to use the one at Melville's. It was hilarious watching Norm come down the stairs and get right back in line.
