View Full Version : My 15 Minutes of Fame (actually about a minute)

I just started to listen to AM Talk Radio at home. There's a radio host, Howie Carr, here in Boston. He talks about current events, mostly politics. He also writes a column for The Boston Herald. He's hilarious.

People call into his show or he reads e:mails on the air. Today, he was discussing, among many things, John Kerry's appearance last night on Hardball with Chris Matthews. I didn't have the nerve to call in. I'd probably get tongue tied and mess it up, so I sent Howie an e:mail with my opinion. It's political, so I won't get into it, but he read my e:mail on the air! He kicked it off with -- Janice wrote in and said.....then he laughed and joked about what I wrote.

He only read a portion of my e:mail....a couple of funny lines that I wrote. Of course, I was home alone, and was frustrated that nobody heard it with me. I called my husband all excited. It was cool.

Anyone else ever have a similar experience?

Here's the scoop on Howie Carr.

I've called into a few local talk shows. Never national, though.

I've always wanted to call into C-SPAN's Washington Journal. Unfortunately, their phone numbers aren't toll free 800 numbers, they have a DC area code :(

Awesome Janice!

When I was 14, I made the front page of one of the inner sections of the Des Moines Register. That was pretty cool.

A few years ago I always liked to call my favorite station and for the most part, they played my call on the air (it was always a recording). Here's one I remember when I requested a song from a now-defunct oldies station in my area.

Me: Could you tell me the name of this one song?

DJ: How does it go?

Me: *singing* Saturday night I was downtown.

DJ: That's "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress"

Me: Thanks.

DJ: Do you know any woman that fits that category?

Me:  No.

Way to go, Janice!

A few times I've called in to one of the radio stations around here, and was able to hear myself. But nothing like that. Very cool. :D

I have done the talk radio thing too, but was on the air. I remember some times when I got tongue tied, but then I wrote some notes and read from my notes so that I didn't get side tracked. I noticed that when I'm on radio, a million things start to flood my mind, and my time is limited.

In 1984, I was waving from the audience on The Bozo Show.

My sister was on The Jerry Springer Show in 2000, as an audience member who went on stage to rub Steve's bald head.

Next week, some friends and I are going to Los Angeles to attend some tapings. We have tickets for The Price Is Right, so you never know.

I wonder if you recorded it, but it doesn't sound like you did.

Anyway, I bet it was exciting to hear him read your email! If you ever call in definitely record it!

That one is from 1972, by The Hollies. I remember when it was on the charts.

I didn't record it Fleet. I don't even know if I have a recording feature on my system.

I was so excited to hear him talking about my comments. He really played around with it.

I'll send you the e:mail that I sent to the station. :)
