About seventeen years ago when I was in sixth grade I found a $50 dollar bill laying on the sidewalk while walking to school!

Cool, you're lucky! I wish that would happen to me.
But would that be stealing if I took it?

I don't remember everything I spent that $50 on but I know I bought a lot of comic books. I was really into comics as a kid.

Either you're very honest, or totally insane. If it was in the form CASH you should have kept it. Why? NO one can prove they'd lost it, or if that the cash was really theirs. A check would have some ID on it. Anything other than cash, like jewelry, a lost credit card, etc. should be taken to the nearest police station. Drivers' liscenses can be dropped in any mail box, anywhere in the country regardless of where found, and it will be returned to the owner.

if the individual went to the Lost and Found asking if anyone had found $600 dollars in cash (possibly even identifying the denominations), i would think that would be enough to claim it.

trust me, if you just go to random Lost and Found departments asking for money, and you can't identify it, they wont give it to you (but i'll still keep trying)

Being nice-spirited doesn't make her insane.

well, it was in a wallet and it had a name in it so the honest thing to do was give it back.

What's wrong with being honest?

There was a Leave it to Beaver episode about lost money, and the moral of the story there was "always be honest".
