Why is it that apartments in college towns are so expensive?!? Damn, I couldn't find anything cheap....at all. The cheapest place I got, that's not all run down with roaches living with you, was $699 a month a piece for a 10 month lease. They have aparments that are $545 a month, but on a 12 month lease. I'll be home during the summer, and plus, it works out to be the same, it's just spread out over two more months. I don't have enough money to pay for that, so I'm going to have to take out a loan next year. I really wanted to avoid loans at all costs, but I don't have any other choice. Scholarship is covering about half of my tuition, and I don't want to rely on my parents, because they work hard enough, so the loan is the only way to go. Boulder is one of the most expenisves towns to live in. Ironically, it as the only architecture school in Colorado I could have gone to, so I didn't have any other choice.

Anyway, ignore my ramblings....how much are you all paying for rent....if you do rent. Or much have you payed if you rented in the past?

Is there any way you can stay in a dorm room. They are much cheaper.I've heard.

Geez, $699 IS terrible. I assume there are no towns close by that you could live at where rent might be cheaper...

I think there are decent places around here for about $300-400. But I still live at home.

Actually dorms here run roughly the same. It's close to $7000 for the academic year. So I rather have more space, the kitchen, seperate bedroom, etc., but believe me, I looked into staying here next year, but it wouldn't be worth it. I'm stuck paying $700 a month, so I rather get the better end of the deal.

Well, I have 8am class, so I'd have to get up at 6 just to commute up there. And I don't even have a roommate. Everyone I've talked to already has one. This place sets people up. I really don't want to live alone, and a roach motel is really not what I want too. But I figured, I make roughly $600 a month now. If I can still make that, I could save up money. I've made about $1700 in four months. Summer, I'll have a job, and after next year, I could probably move to a cheaper place on the outskirts of town and won't have to take a loan. It'll be a lot of work...but I really don't have much choice.

I hate how everything is all about money in this country and how they try and drain as much as they can out of college students.

The last thing I would do these days is pay rent. Both my husband and I pay $600/month on our mortgage at 4.6% annual interest rate. We bought a brand new house in La Salle back in October (Just outside Montréal) for $150,000.

If I were you, I would look around for a small house, rather than pay that ridiclulous rent.

My god. We are living in a rented house and the rent is $450 a month, and this is a 3-bedroom HOUSE!!!

I can see now I am going to dread college. :(

You don't want to know how much my rent is here in NYC.

Hell, I don't even want to know sometimes.

Wow, that is an excellent price. I don't know of any 3 bedroom houses around here that would have such a good monthly payment.

Gosh that's rough. You're so right about how college students get drained. It's utterly ridiculous. I'm lucky for now, because I've dodged having to live in a dorm or paying rent. But situations like yours just suck. Hopefully after next year you can get a better deal.

I could have lived at home, but a 300 mile commute everyday is a little rough. :p

Ah come on! Don't you have any sense of adventure? :p

That's good of you to pick a school not based on where your hometown is. Me? I am going to a school I'm not so jazzed about just because it is 5 minutes away. :o

We live right in the middle of a town of about 9,000(tri-city area is about 22,000 people), but it's very quiet. We're about a half-mile from the Elementary school and a bunch of churches, so the traffic is pretty bad right before and after school and before and after church, but other than that, it's great. Wal-Mart is only a few blocks away(I can see it out the window) and all the fast-food joints are within a 1/2 mile. There's a bank and a library on this street too, within walking distance right on the edge of the highway. It's a very nice neighborhood, never have had any problems. An older couple lives next door and has 2 dogs and a cat, the house on the other side is vacant(although someone does come over from time to time to do work) and a couple of other houses behind us and down the street are vacant.

Here's a map, we are only about 30 minutes from Auburn University as well:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&countryid=250&addtohistory=&searchtab=address&searchtype=address&address=&city=Valley&state=AL&zipcode=&search=++Search++&finditform=1

I am north of that red star right off the interstate.

$450/month is AWESOME for a 3 bedroom house.

When I lived in THAT other town *spits*, we had a HUGE 2-bedroom apartment that was $400/month. Not bad -- it was just like a house. My bedroom was 12x24. Now my bedroom is 9x9. God, I miss my old bedroom. :crying:

Damn...but I think they were that way here too. And I sure as hell was not going to live with roaches. Yet I do now...

Anyway, I think my aunt pays $425 for a little one bedroom.

I could have done that too. But fortunately there was a major university 30 mins away. I commuted and lived at home. Now I commute 20 mins and still live at home. I like blowing my money on credit card payments. Doesn't leave room for rent/mortage.

I hear ya on that one. I am having to move to Greenville over the summer, because comuting an hour and a half each day is just getting way out of hand. THe lowest i've been able to find it round 550$ a month, so I think i might just have to break down and find a roomate. Maybe you should consider that.

I have no idea- I live at home and go to a community college. 80% of the students live in town, too. I travel about 15 minutes every day to get to school.

There's so many homeless people seen strolling the streets of downtown Boulder. This town is so weird. You have the really, really rich people and the really, really poor people. Not many people are middle class.

Rents in Boston are insane. A few students usually rent a house or a large apartment together.

They had this law in Ames that no more than 5 students could share a house. People were so mad, because they'd rent these huge houses, but then could only have 5 people pay rent.

I'm guessing this was to keep the partying down? Personally, I wouldn't have been able to take more than one roommate, even way back when.

Probably was. Ames/ISU just cancelled the annual school celebration due to rioting.

I had one roommate and that was one too many sometimes.

I saw a story yesterday where this student at New York University stayed in the basement of the library at the college because he couldn't afford a dorm. He had a laptop in which he wrote journals about his experiences, had clothes, and had a way to clean up. When officials found out about it, they gave him a free dorm.
