View Full Version : "The Voices Of The Flintstones"
Lamont Holmes 04-26-2004, 02:45 PM Here are the actors who did the voices on "The Flintstones".
Alan Reed as Fred Flintstone
Mel Blanc as Barney Rubble
Jean Vander Pyl as Wilma Flintstone
Gerry Johnson as Betty Rubble
Harvey Korman as The Great Gazoo
Don Messick as Dino
Jay North("Dennis The Menace") and Sally Struthers("All In The Family") did the voices of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm in "The Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm Show".
Don Messick was known as the voice of Astro in "The Jetsons",and
"Scooby-Doo". Mel Blanc continued doing voices for animated cartoons until his death in 1988. Jean Vander Pyl was also the voice of Jane Jetson on "The Jetsons". She too passed away.
If there was a "Flintstones" reunion,we can get the remaining voice actors. Just a thought.
hawaii five-o 04-27-2004, 12:16 PM Bea Benaderet was the original voice of Betty Rubble.
Daffyfan2004 04-27-2004, 12:58 PM Lamont, I hate to tell you this, but all the original voice actors are deceased. The only ones left are Harvey Korman and I think Gerry Johnson.
Marvo301 05-30-2004, 06:01 AM Jean Vander Pyl was the voice of Rosie the Robot on The Jetsons. She wasnot the voice of Jane Jetson.
Anyone know the names of the performers who have been doing Fred's voice over the years?

I was doing some checking and Henry Cordon has been doing Fred's voice since the mid 70's (after Allen Reed died) and I assume he's still doing the Pebble's cereal commercials.
I think Cartoon Network is using someone else to do Fred's voice for the various promo spots and new toons, but I'm not sure.
Brian Damage 05-31-2004, 03:49 PM you are right about that.
dynoguy88 06-08-2004, 05:04 PM FRED'S VOICE - ALAN REED died on June 14, 1977. After the original Flintstones episodes went off the air, he came back and did Fred's voice in the movie "The man called Flinstone." I believe the latest voice work as Fred came in the mid 70's when he voiced for the Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm show (Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm as teenagers.) but Henry Corden finished and did Fred's voice for the commercials and the rest of the Flintstone movies to date, although another voice actor (don't know his name) who sounds very close to Reed's voice, takes over once in a while.

WILMA'S VOICE - JEAN VANDERPYL died on April 10, 1999. She was the last voice actor to pass away and the voice of Wilma never changed in over 3 decades. She also did the voice of Rosie on the Jetson's.

BETTY'S VOICE - BEA BENADERET died on October 13, 1968 - just 2 years after the Flintstones went off the air. She died of lung cancer. She was by far the best voice of Betty. Several other voice actors tried to imitate her holsome "Betty like" voice in all the Flintstone movies, but none ever came close. And none ever came close to Betty's trademark laugh. Gerry Johnson came in and did Betty's voice after Bea left the Flintstones to do Petticoat Junction. In all the movies, Betty's voice was most horrible in "The Jetson's meet the Flintstones," where the voice actor sounded like she was being strangled.

BARNEY'S VOICE - MEL BLANC died on July 10, 1989. He is also famous for his voice work in the Luney Tunes characters.

Jean Vanderpyl also did the voice of Pebbles too
Marvo301 12-03-2004, 04:25 AM Besides Rosie, Jean Vander Pyl voiced several other characters on the Jetsons including Mrs. Spacely and also Mr. Spacely's secretary. She was not however the voice of Jane Jetson. Penny Singleton was the voice of Jane.

Don Messick did NOT do Dino's voice in the original series...he did Arnold the Papaerboy and Bamm-Bamm Rubble (and, occasionally, Joe Rockhead).
Dino's voice was provided by Doug Young ("No Help Wnted", originally broadcast 21 October 1960); Jerry Mann ("The Snorkasaurus Hunter"{the infamous "Talking Dino" episode}, originally broadcast 27 January 1961); and Mel Blanc (every episode following threrafter, all the way through "The Flintstone Kids" in the late 1980s.)
Jean Vander Pyl was the only original voice to survive the many incarnations of "The Flintstones"; indeed, she was the only voice artist retained from the original "Flagstones" two-minute pilot made in 1959 (Fred and Barney were voiced by Daws"Yogi Bear" Butler {who would do Barney's voice briefly during the start of the 1961-62 season, when Mel Blanc was recuperating from a near-fatal car crash}, and Betty's voice was provided by June Foray (better known as Rocky, the Flying Squirrel and Natasha Fatale on "Rocky and Bullwinkle").
Additionally, Henry Corden provided Fred's singing voice(good and bad) as early as the first season("Hot Lips Hannigan", {7 October 1960} and "The Girl's Night Out" {6 January 1961}, uncredidted, to be sure), because Alan Reed was tone-deaf.
Steve Carras 01-08-2005, 01:23 AM How about guest vopices:
A guy named Jerry Mann is on my DVD nopw, as a motion pciture poruder, typivcally Tuetonic soundingh (MONSTER FROM THE TARPITS-Walked Edmiuston did a Hans Conreid impression as this guy in a second season one-THIS IS YOUR LIFESAVER)>There's also a Cary Grant imprtessionist named Bob Hoipkins in this.
Frank nelson, Howard Macnear, and among multiple voicers-Paul Frees and Sandra GOuld were in the firstr several seasons. I've got the DVD of the first and there is the second soon the third on DVD.
(Jerry mann did the Phil Slver-slike Dino. He's also heard doing the Ed Wynn voices for Hot Lips and for Mezmo!
Later, of course, Howard Morris, harvey Korman Janet Waldo and Al Melvin would be heard (as were the core cast)..
Alan Reed was tone deaf? Wow! I've always wondered why Henry Corden did the singing.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

That's interesting. But did Hal Smith provide his singing voice in the episode "The Twitch" {October 12, 1962} ?

W.J. Griffin 01-09-2005, 12:53 PM Well, considering that Fred wasn't doing any actual singing in that episode (except at the show's epilouge, which, of course, was Henry Corden), then yes, it was Hal Smith.

SO Dino's first bark was by Doug Young and not Mel Blanc or Don Messick? THat's interesting, I wonder where you got that, WJG.
When did Julie Dees take over Betty's voice after Gerry Johnson or Bea Benederet? I also know John Stephenson AKA Doggie Daddy did some voices on the Flintstones. Then Frank Welker did the Schmoo on Fred and Barney Meet The Schmoo
Daffyfan2004 02-25-2005, 02:09 PM A little info on Dino. I never knew that Doug Young voiced Dino. I thought it was always Mel Blanc, (the barking Dino, not the talking one) except in that one ep where Mel wasn't available and Daws Butler filled in. Betty had a third voice around the 70s, Gay Autterson (Hartweg). I think Julie Dees took over after her. And in answer to some other posts here, Jeff Bergmen voiced Fred Flintstone on the new Cartoon Network spots.

June Foray did Betty's voice ONLY in the unseen "Flagstones" test reel; the story goes that Hanna and Barbera were dissatisfied with voices in the pilot and recast everyone except Jean Van Der Pyl, hence, Alan Reed, Mel Blanc and Bea Benaderet replaced Daws Butler (who did both Fred and Barney) and Ms Foray.
The pilot itself is on the Flintstones' first season DVD; the scene in question is the slightly altered "pool lunch" scene from "The Swimming Pool" (14 October 1960), but is otherwise identical.

"The Flintstones: A Moder Stone-Age Phenomenon" by T.R. Adams (Turner Books, 1994), a book no true Flintstones aficianado should be without!!

I've got tht book, W.J., but whilst itis excellent, mentioning TOTaLLY obscure guest-voices (or obsucre ibnthe FLintstone context)-like Bob Hopkins ("Cry Grnite"), Jerry Mann (Phil Silvers,Ed Wynn, thereby doing Dino's one time tlking voice, Bilko ,Mesmo, Hot Lips Hannigan),etc., freeuntly the voice credits forgests and cameo-charcterss are wrong--like when (FLINTSTONE OF PRINCESTONE) Daws Butler-voiced turtle used by Wilma's appliance ws lisited as voiced by Mel Blnac. Otrherwise,it is a very good book.
a
One thing proven 'bout THIS IS YOUR LIFESVER's (1961-62) very entertaining con rtist MontyGyspum, is tht his Hans Conreid-styled voice isNOT him tll but nineteen fifties-sixvetern puppet show host(Bob Clmpett,iN 70S WITH Sidnd Mrty Kroft), WlkerEdminston, doing good impersoniton of Conreid (the chrcterlso is lot like Jerry Colonn.) Odd since they wereble to get people like Tony Curtis & Frnk "Yessss?" Nelson nd Howie (Floyd fromGRIFFITH) McNertyo do voices.

No, she plyed Betty from 1964-1966. You're right that her famous predecessor (B.B.) had died in'68, two yrs.past the show;'s orig.network primetime run (inddition to which..Benadaret's Betty ended in '
64 as I hinted.)
Pug Lover 09-10-2005, 12:42 AM Prior to The Flintstones,Bea Banderet had starred as Blanche Morton in the 1950s sitcom The George Burns & Gracie Allen Show.

I have that book, and it's full of mistakes. (Though DY doing DINO I do NOT recall being among them!)
Like Mel Blanc doing the turtle who is briefly used as a wahsing device in 1962-63's(?) FLINTSTOEN OF PRINCESTONE when it's CLEAR Daws Butler doing his Quick Draw McGraw.
But most of it's accurate.
tv star collector 10-20-2005, 06:42 PM Sadly, Henry Corden (who voiced Fred Flintstone, after Alan Reed's death, in
the series PEBBLES AND BAMM-BAMM, FRED & BARNEY, and various specials
and commercials) passed away on May 27, 2005. Although primarily a voice
actor, he also appeared in such films as THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY
and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and TV series (e.g., THE MONKEES).
bossradio93 03-13-2006, 04:29 PM Here are the actors who did the voices on "The Flintstones".

Actually, Daws Butler filled in for Mel Blanc when he was involved in a horrific car accident in 1961 which broke every bone in his body and was allowed to record some voices while he (Mel) was hospitalized according to some reports.
To see what cartoons Daws did Barney's voice for while Mel was recouperating, click here (http://www.topthat.net/webrock/faq/faq16.htm).
If you saw The Flintstones live-action movies and listened closely to certain Dino's sounds, a majority of them were recorded by Blanc (you can easily tell the panting sounds that were made by him) that were used in the films.
Jay North("Dennis The Menace") and Sally Struthers("All In The Family") did the voices of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm in "The Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm Show".
The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show aired from 1971-1976 on Saturday mornings on CBS even when Sally was portraying Gloria Bunker-Stivic in another CBS smash hit "All in the Family".
Don Messick was known as the voice of Astro in "The Jetsons",and
"Scooby-Doo". Mel Blanc continued doing voices for animated cartoons until his death in 1988.
Don died October 24, 1997 from complications of a stroke at the age of 71.
Jean Vander Pyl was also the voice of Jane Jetson on "The Jetsons". She too passed away.
Yes, she passed away April 10, 1999 at the age of 79. Jean's voice of Wilma was indeed a 'perfect match' according to some message boards I've read.
It was Penny Singleton who did the voice of Jane Jetson in the original 1962 series. Ms. Singleton died November 12, 2003 at the age of 95 also from a stroke as well.
FRED'S VOICE - ALAN REED died on June 14, 1977.
Fred Flintstone's third 'voice', now belongs to Jeff Bergman, who became the new 'voice' to many of the legendary "Looney Tunes" Warner Bros. cartoon characters after succeeding Mel Blanc who passed away in 1989.
Henry Corden, I felt did a good job as Fred's second voice, didn't somehow have the originality as Alan Reed's Fred did. According to some posts at other boards I visit or read, it seems Jeff does an almost 'dead-on' voice of Alan's Fred.
Henry Corden passed away May 19, 2005 of emphysema at the age of 85.
dynoguy88 04-19-2006, 12:10 AM June Foray did Betty's voice ONLY in the unseen "Flagstones" test reel; the story goes that Hanna and Barbera were dissatisfied with voices in the pilot and recast everyone except Jean Van Der Pyl, hence, Alan Reed, Mel Blanc and Bea Benaderet replaced Daws Butler (who did both Fred and Barney) and Ms Foray.

It's rather surprising that June Foray wasn't called back to do Betty's voice after "The Flagstones," pilot was recorded considering she has been called the Queen of Cartoon voices for the last 50 years. Here's a small section of her involvement in the Flintstones.....
Around 1960, Hanna-Barbera was working on another addition to the animated family show derby that included at that point Bob Clampett's Beany & Cecil (as part of the Mattel Toys-sponsored Matty's Funday Funnies) and The Bugs Bunny Show, both of which were airing in prime time on the ABC TV network. They made a pilot, The Flagstones, which led to the series, retitled The Flintstones due to conflicts with the comic strip Hi & Lois. On this pilot, which recently resurfaced thanks to the diligence of researchers working for Turner, it is Foray, not Bea Benaderet, who is voicing the dishy Mrs. Betty Rubble. Why did Ms. Foray not continue in this role?
"I have no idea. That really disappointed me...I don't think that Hanna-Barbera had anything to do with the decision...as far as I can figure it was a decision from the network brass. When I went in to do the voice, I asked them 'What kind of a voice do you want? Do you want a nagging voice, a sweet voice?' and they replied 'Just do your normal voice.' That's what I did...it was just me. Then, to my shock, they held auditions later for the voice, and they didn't invite me. I can look back at it now without any sort of resentment, but back then I was really mad."
June would return to the Flintstones several times to do voices for some minor characters like Grandma Dynamite, some nurses, secretaries, dinosaurs, and other old ladies.
Mikado 04-19-2006, 01:38 AM It was Penny Singleton who did the voice of Jane Jetson in the original 1962 series. Ms. Singleton died November 12, 2003 at the age of 95 also from a stroke as well.
Ironically, Penny was most famous in the 40s for doing live action movies as the comic strip character "Blondie"
Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake as "Blondie & Dagwood"
TV Knowledge Fan 08-23-2006, 05:16 PM ..who worked on the show had experience in "old-time radio". Alan Reed and Mel Blanc had worked with each other before on several shows, including Mel's
1946-'47 CBS Radio sitcom. This is why Joe Barbera decided to team them up after he rejected George O'Hanlon & Hal Smith's original voice-tracks for the first few episodes before the series' premiere in 1960--Alan and Mel were PERFECT together, and that was that. Mel and Bea Benderet had worked together on radio and in dozens of Warner Bros. cartoons [including an hilarious two-spot in "Kit For Cat" (1948), where they ham it up as radio voices "Melvin" and "Beatrice", who try to kill each other!], and THEY were perfect! Jean VanderPyl and Bea had ALSO worked together on radio...well, you get the idea.
I cannot stress the fact that Mel was THE most valuable voice on the show- after Blanc's near-fatal auto accident in January 1961, just as production of the first season was ending, Joe Barbera was forced to have Daws Butler record five episodes as "Barney" (using a slight variation of his "Yogi" voice- the one Mel deliberately tried NOT to imitate on his own) until Blanc was well enough to record his own lines again...from a full body cast suspended over a hospital bed in his own bedroom! For over a year, Joe arranged to have the cast meet at Mel's house, and record their dialogue WITH Mel in his bedroom (set up as a portable recording studio), until Blanc's cast was removed and he could record in the studio again. THAT'S how valuable he was.
John Stephenson started out as an announcer on radio, and usually played "good-looking" types in films and on TV. He was the most used "utility" voice in the series from season one, usually as a narrator, "Perry Gunnite", "Joe Rockhead", one-shot characters, and eventually, "Mr. Slate". Don Messick became the second most utilized voice, as everything from "Arnold the Paperboy" to "Bamm-Bamm" and "Hoppy". Unfortunately, Jerry Mann only worked the first season, and never did another voice for H-B again after 1961. Established "radio" voices like Paul Frees, Frank Nelson, Bill Thompson, Sandra Gould, Howard McNear, Jerry Hausner and Paula Winslowe (the "other woman" in "The Entertainer") only provided a few voices here and there.
[more to come?]
