(DVD+R Disc) It says on the front, "4.7 GB of Data" and "120 Min". I get the data part, but I don't understand the minutes. It says on the front "120 Minutes", but on the back, it gives the listings for "HQ - 60", "SP - 120", "LP - 180", "EP - 240", and "SLP - 360", and the corresponding minutes. I know those are the different types of speeds used for VHS tapes, but I'm wondering, does that mean if I was to use a VHS tape with recorded video on SLP, I'd be able to get 360 Minutes/6 Hours on the DVD+R Disc? Or, am I still only allowed 120 minutes? If so, why did they even bother to put that stuff on the back!? It's kind of a mixed message here.

The answer is "YES". That DVD-R can be recorded with various speeds. The slower the speed, the lower picture quality you get. You have to look at the DVD recorder's manual to figure out how to access the different speeds.

I don't use commercial blank DVD-R's. I have access to industry standard ones through my company that offer muliple audio and video tracks, subtitle encoding, and copy protection encoding.

VHS is an analog medium - it wouldn't matter what speed it was recorded at when transferred to a digital medium such as a dvd, the speeds on that DVD+R refer to the MPEG compression rate; the higher the compression the more video you can fit on there (and the lower the quality)

So I have to somehow set the MPEG Compression rate whenever I'm ripping the video?

I *really* need to catch up with the times and learn more about DVD's. I just got a DVD player(with a VCR combo) in February, but that was only because my other VCR died.

I have about 200 tapes in my room and am not looking forward to converting to DVD.

I won't lie to you, it's expensive and time-consuming. But fun, nonetheless.
