View Full Version : Should parents do this?
G-Force Glockstar 04-25-2004, 10:28 AM Do you think parents should let their kids watch TV all they want and work on the computer all they want?
I think they should, but my parents don't let me do that all I want.
I have a daily limit on my computer. And I only get to watch a certain amount of TV unless if an exception.
Tell me what you think, and vote in my poll, please.
Bang A Gong 04-25-2004, 10:35 AM It all depends.
If your child is good, doesn't cause any trouble, keeps to him/herself, than there is nothing wrong with letting them on the computer or allowing them to watch television all they want. Take me for example. I never leave the house. I don't cause any trouble. I sit at home quietly, all by myself, when other kids my age are out doing crazy things. What's so wrong with me getting on the computer or watching television? I'm not hurting anyone. I am minding my own business. I'm bored anyway, so let me do things that keep me entertained.

I am a kid that seems just like what you said.
But my parents say I can't watch all the TV I want and be on the computer all I want because I use to do it way to much.
It's not fair, though.
Mijada 04-25-2004, 11:06 AM I think parents should definitely set a limit on the amount of computer and TV time they allow their kids. Kids need to spend time reading and playing outside too. Too much of one thing is not good at all.

I don't think kids should be forced to read for entertainment because like you said it wouldn't be entertaining. They should be forced to read to enhance their reading skills especially while they are in the Elementary school years. Too many kids are going on to HS with poor reading skills. Everything can't be blamed on the teachers. Parents have to take on responsibility too and that means not allowing their kids to watch TV and play on the computer all day long. I feel if kids develop good reading skills when they are little, they won't look at reading as a chore and when they become teens they just might want to read for entertainment.

I'm the same way too. And my parents pretty much let me watch TV and go online all I want. Not to mention I have a tv and computer in my room so its not like they're gonna set a limit on that.
So, in my opinion, I guess it depends on the circumstances. If the child misbehaves or whatever, then yes there should be a limit. But if the child is generally a good kid then no there shouldnt be a limit.

My thoughts, exactly.
Ewan's My Man 04-25-2004, 12:12 PM I don't have any limit on my tv and internet time...however I don't need to. Now, if I'm on the internet for 5 hours straight during the day, someones gonna say something, but usually I get bored by that time. I'm well-balanced, I watch tv, I get on the internet, I play field hockey, I hang out with friends, and I read all the time.

Whats the point of entertainment if its forced??
I hate it when kids are forced to read for entertainment. My teacher gives us a reading assignment that is due a week later but makes us finish it the first day, to keep us entertained. I have come to despise the book she is making us read because it isn't entertaining under force.
Anyway, parents should set a limit for TV and computer, because some kids who don't have a limit spend their whole life doing this stuff and they will suffer from inactivity. But I agree, when you can't go on here or TV, the kid should be able to choose what they want to do to keep them entertained.
Nanny Fine 04-25-2004, 01:28 PM My daughter watches very little TV (we are never home) and the only time she's on the computer is at school. She's fine. If she wanted to watch more TV I'd be thrilled to let her because it would mean we were home more than we are. I dont think too much would hurt but I also dont think a kid should be watching 12 hours of TV a day.
I think it depends on the age of the child. Young kids should have limits.

I'll be 13 on June 22. Am I old enough to watch all the TV I want and work on my computer all I want yet?
IMO, I think by the time a kid gets to be 12 or 13 years old, they should get lots of more freedom to do whatever they want.
Sargent Stewie 04-25-2004, 05:24 PM I'm in the 6th grades and I get mostly A's and B's and my parents let my watch TV and use the computer a lot, but only if my grades are good.

I'd say maybe 2 or 3 hours max during school time when you are your age. If situations change and we spend more time at home when my daughter is that age that would be about the amount she'd spend in front of either/or. There's a lot of school work when you are that age not to mention too many...curiosities...to be spent online constantly. More online or TV time during the summer is okay - it's almost expected.

I say no and it shouldn't depend on if the child is good or not, any young adult needs boundaries, who knows what they might be doing on the internet, who they could be talking too, etc....
tv, I say there should be a limit, if homework's done without having to be told to do it, then that person should get to watch an extra hour or so of tv that day.
I disagree with you, I don't think kids that age should have the freedom to do whatever they want, they're not adults, and like I said they need boundaries.
Michael [hXc] 04-25-2004, 08:33 PM At school, we learned that if a child is inactive now, they will get into that habit, and if kids are active, they have less of a chance for heart attacks and arthritis. If parents don't set a limit, they might spend too much time on the TV or computer and they may not get the exercise benefits they need.
Polniaczek033 04-25-2004, 10:15 PM I think it depends on the circumstances and stuff, but I think kids should be allowed as much as they want. Punishment for me however is TV. Which doesn't matter cuz I don't watch TV. :D But it all just depends.

But you shouldn't be online or whatever so much that you become an antisocial person completely and bite and kill whoever comes near you when you finally take a break. o.O haha
Polniaczek033 04-25-2004, 10:16 PM Double post sorta. Sorry. :o
BlueEyes 04-26-2004, 11:05 AM I agree, it depends on the circumstances. Personally, I don't have computer or tv limits ,but I'm not doing either 24/7. The internet gets boring after a few minutes for one thing. I only have time to watch tv in the evening, so I usually get one show in, and I try to watch a baseball game whenever my team is playing.
It also depends what they're doing... if the internet is being used for research I don't think there should be a time limit, whereas if it was being used for entertainment.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 04-26-2004, 12:46 PM I never had a limit on either. When I was younger, I had a 'bed time' for school nights, but thats about it. I hate the outdoors and all physical activities. I dont consider myself anti-social, but Im def. a homebody.

I'll bump this up a little.
I'm the exact same way. I do think some limits should be set, until at least 15/16 years of age. I'm talking from experience here. Having had a TV/Computer in my room for the last few years of school was very hard to get away from, LOL, so ultimately, I think limits should be set and no one kid should have a computer/tv in their room until at least 15 or 16... Just my little rambling, lol.

It shouldnt come to a point where you're antisocial.
But if its "turn off the TV and read" then its JUST as bad. Reading and TV have no advantages/disadvantages over eachother. reading exercises your mind a LOT more than TV ever could, and while i dont think anyone should be FORCED to read for entertainment, i believe it should be strongly encouraged... it builds vocabulary and improves spelling, improves concentration, and the more you read regularily, the FASTER you read.
I have been an enthusiastic reader since before gradeschool, and it has given me a substantial advantage throughout school and beyond.

You're a kid. They are adults. They know what's best for you. Sitting at the computer and TV all day is going to turn your brain into a pile of compost. Get out of the house. Help someone less fortunate than yourself. Go to the library. Go to the movies. Paint a picture. Surprise yourself, and them, every day that you have a chance. Life is so precious, and so short. Don't WASTE it on the damn internet!
Hollow 05-02-2004, 11:59 PM my dad lets me dress weirder depending on how good my grades are. he sucks.
Jokerette 05-03-2004, 01:37 AM No, it's unhealthy. There's a huge problem with obese kids these days more than ever and I think computers and TV are the main reasons.
Kids need to be outside, they need exercise and to be out there mixing properly. TV and computers are fine in moderation, but not all the time. When I was a kid I was hardly ever indoors.

And then there's the issue of kids respecting their parents. We're not around to see how bad you suck... In other words..we're not looking at your report card to see your grades. And then there are parents who see their children as their "offspring" literally, and prefer not to be CEO of a corporation in town while their kids run around said town looking like a bunch of hollowed out, strung out, rung out, and down and out freaks. One day, when you go for job interviews, you will have to put on a nice clean skirt and blouse. Or perhaps some pants and a nice shirt. I refuse to hire anyone with piercings, tatoos or freak-show clothing. It goes like this: My business, my rules. Wanna job? Dress normally and get back to me. Want to work at the circus? Here's a ticket. And don't let the door hitcha where the good lord splitcha!

I agree. Obesity in kids is more and more common, and they need to get outside more and exercise/play. Also, staring at the screen too much can cause headaches and eyestrain.

My Dad (and Mom) don't like me on the computer in the middle of the night either. They think it can be dangerous, but I try to be careful on the internet.
barwars 05-15-2004, 11:00 AM The internet isnt any different in the middle of the afternoon than in the middle of the night.

Me either.
I think another reason they don't want me awake on the computer at night is because they don't want me to be tired on schooldays.
But I don't understand why they won't let me on weekends, so sometimes I just have to sneak up.
EmoJoe 05-15-2004, 05:17 PM "You can go on the computer as long as you exercize a lot today." is what my mom always says, and I agree. If you go on the computer, you also need to exersize a lot to stay healthy.
