That's not necessarily true. There have been lots of missing kids who have gotten national attention who aren't from rich families. A lot of it depends on how much the family and friends of the missing child pull together to make sure the story gets out. What are the circumstances surrounding her dissapearance? Did someone actually see her get abducted or did she just vanish? If someone saw her get kidnapped, an Amber Alert should have been issued. If no one saw anything the authorities may think she just ran away.

I am one who believes that no child should get national attention. When the media gives Dru Sjodin or Elizabeth Smart wall-to-wall coverage, it's wrong not to cover other children, and since children go missing everyday, they shouldn't cover them at all.

Well then how are they going to ever find them? I don't think they should make the story national right away but if there is evidence that the child has been taken out of state then it should receive national attention. If Elizabeth Smart had not gotten national attention and her abductor had not been profiled on AMW she may not have been found.

Thousands of kids are abducted each year... you never hear about them because they can't cover them all(unless a channel is developed for that and only that).

Local channels should cover missing cases though.

Ironic, because a little girl who lives in Syracuse, about an hour away from here, has been missing since six yesterday. Same deal with her. She was on a barbie scooter alone outside, and then she was gone. They found her scooter a little ways from her house. All over the local news, it's so sad...she's only 5. :(

That's sad, and kind of scary since it's only 10 blocks away from you!

Last year, there was a 12 year old girl that went missing one day after school. An Amber Alert was issued immediately, and everybody was searching for her all night. They found her the next day -- wandering around at the sh*tty local mall (only has 7 stores). How she managed to get in there before closing time mystifies me.

Here are some news stories

An Amber Alert was issued. This was on my news this morning and I do not live in NY.

I'm a bit miffed to read Brents comments that he thinks there should be NO coverage of missing children. Guess you don't have a kid.

I agree it's not fair that some children receive more coverage than others but covering one is better than covering none.

Audrey Seiler got a good amount of coverage and she was a FAKE. But had the kidnapping occurred for real I would still have wanted to know about it.

What I never understood with the Elizabeth Smart story was that she didn't even try to fight the man who abducted her. She should have tried to get away and not willingly go with him. My mother says that even if the criminal threatens to kill if you fight, you should still fight, because if you don't, once you are away from your home, your chance of escaping is very low. If you fight, there is a chance that you will be fine.

Elizabeth was woken up from a dead sleep in the middle of the night. How coherently would YOU think if that happened to you? He told her he'd kill her sister (sleeping next to her) and the rest of her family if she said anything. If I wake up in the middle of the night I can barely function to get to the bathroom let alone anything else.

In Carlie Brucia's case the fighting thing would have probably saved her life. She walked right away with Joseph Smith and never fought at all. Same with Dru Sjodin.

But I dont think Elizabeth Smart could have fought off her kidnapper.

I guess in her case, fighting wouldn't work. My mother said that she would rather me speak and get her killed than go with anyone and get myself killed.

So she was found? Was she alone?

I know when I first wake up in the morning I am really not alert. If someone wanted to do something in the middle of the night, I don't see how I could stop them if I was asleep.
