Beef-Scarfing Couple Booted From Buffet

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.ap.org/)

Saturday April 24, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY, UT—A couple on a low-carb diet were kicked out of a buffet restaurant after the manager said they'd eaten too much roast beef.

Sui Amaama, who along with his wife has been on the Atkins Diet for two weeks, was asked to leave after he went up to the buffet at the Chuck-A-Rama in suburban Taylorsville for his 12th slice of roast beef.

"It's so embarrassing actually," said Isabelle Leota, Amaama's wife.

"We went in to have dinner, we were under the impression Chuck-A-Rama was an all-you-can-eat establishment.''

Not so, said Jack Johanson, the restaurant chain's district manager.

"We've never claimed to be an all-you-can-eat establishment," said Johanson.

"Our understanding is a buffet is just a style of eating," he explained.

The general manager, who was carving the meat Tuesday, became concerned about having enough beef for other patrons and asked Amaama to stop, Johanson said.

The offended couple asked for a refund.

The manager refused and called police when they would not leave.

The couple said they had eaten at Chuck-A-Rama's $8.99 buffet at least twice a week, but did not plan to return.

12 slices of roast beef and diet don't go together.

I don't know what it is about these idiots and their fear of carbohydrates.

You don't get fat from eating rice, bread, pasta, and noodles!!!! You get fat from eating too much beef!!!

Like anything else, carbs have to be used in moderation.

Simple carbohydrates = sugar
Complex carbs are healthier, but also has to be used moderately.

You are probably young and have a high metabolizim(?). You are burning more than you put in. The bad thing about these carb diets is when you are on it you are basicly starving your body of carbs. Fat people stay off the carbs and their bodies burn the fat for energy. Once they get of the low carb diet their bodies start storing carbs like crazy because they haven't had them in a while. Which when unused turns into fat. Cattle farmers do the same with cows. They starve them of protein for a few weeks and then they load them up so that they look fuller and thicker when it comes time to sell them to the slaughter house. The best way to diet is to cut back on the total calories with only about a 20% to 30% intake of carbs. BUT one very inportant factor is exercize. People diet and lose weight but they don't realize that along with burning fat they are also burning off muscle. Do some cardo work and lift some weights to keep your muscle mass intack. Burn the fat over the muscle but keep the muscle by lifting 2-3 times a week.

Rice and Noodles are the main part of Asian diets. Asians don't eat big slabs of steak for dinner like many Americans do.

The fact is Asians are thin and Americans are getting fatter.

They also eat alot of seafood. That is were they get their protein. And you are right. Asians are thin and Americans are getting fatter and you have no clue what you are talking about when it comes to nutrition. Come back when you learn something.

I have to have pasta. I'm serious. I MUST have pasta. I can live without beef and rarely eat it (I prefer chicken), but I eat pasta about twice a week...sometimes with tomato sauce, or just butter and parmesan cheese. Ravioli, ziti, spaghetti, tortellini...gotta have it.

I love potatoes, rice, bread, all the starchy stuff. My weight is fine though. I don't overdo anything. Except on weekends, I splurge on chips, sweets and chocolate, etc.

It's most likely the beef industry that's behind the low carb diet fad.

They want everyone to eat more beef so they can make more money.

On a related note, it was on the news the the other night that Anhauser-Busch is upset that the South Beach Diet has slammed beer in their diet book.

I guess they are putting out ads showing that Bud, in moderation, won't fatten one up.

The SB diet has become so popular that it's affecting beer sales.

You can still eat pasta and not gain much weight at all. The stupid low-carb people are making it sound like if you eat pasta, bread & pizza, you'll gain 100 lbs. in a month. You can still enjoy all these, as long as it's in moderation. Now I heard on TV the other day that fruit is on that list along with the pasta, bread & pizza! FRUIT?!!!! I love apples, oranges, & strawberries. It's not like I'm eating a whole bag of apples in one day!! But fruit?!! Like I said before, GIVE ME A BREAK!! I've had enough of this B.S. Stop the madness!!

When I was in the midst of this weight loss thing I'm doing I wanted to try Atkins because I was "stuck". It worked like magic - I lost 8 pounds in 10 days after having been stuck with no loss at all for almost a month. But the restrictions were too hard for me to follow with the type of work I do and the schedule (or lack of schedule I guess you could say) that I have to maintain. So I quit doing it and went back to eating salads, fruits, chicken, etc. I dont eat more than 10 grams of fat in a day (or try not to), I walk 10 miles a day, I don't eat any chocolate or crap like that and I try to not snack on junk stuff, I eat carrots, fat free pretzels, etc instead. I dont think Atkins is wrong but even when i was doing it there was no way on the earth I could have eaten 12 pieces of meat at one time for goodness sake, I'd have puked.

Beef alone will not clog your arteries. The Atkins diet does not tell you to eat all the meat you want like a slob. There is a mix with veggies and fruit as well.

If you want to learn more about nutrition and weight loss/gain there are many good scientific articles out there, but you can not distill why people are overweight and what to do about it into a few sentence or a few paragraph post.

Heh...okay...hopefully...cows eat GRAINS and not other protein--as in animal protein. We've got our hands full with Mad Cow as it is. Cows do not eat, nor are fed, the flesh of other animals unless it's gotten into their feed "accidentally on purpose." ;)

Yep. So did I. It was WATER weight. You do not lose fat that quickly from your body..it's absolutely impossible. Eating protein signals our kidneys to release trapped water from our tissues. That's the "magic" of the initial weigt loss on a high protein ketogenic diet. You DO look thinner! And frankly losing water weight is fine with me. Sad fact is that once you go OFF Atkins (or Tarnower/Scarsdale) and eat 2 strands of spaghetti, you're back to square one because your body goes..."CARBS!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: " and you retain the fluid again.

If you're gonna rant, let's do some pre-research. ;) Nutritionally speaking (food person here...who does a lot of research for my clients on this diet.... and I have been on it... ) you do *not* need fruit to "survive". Fruit is very healthy, of course, and we all know it can help us fight disease and possibly even cancer. But vitamin C and fiber and water can be gotten from other sources besides fruit. So let's put some of these food and nutrition rumours to bed:

The Atkins diet does *not omit fruit* after the induction phase is complete. Low carb fruits (pretty much any except bananas) are allowed, and especially used by Atkins Dieters for their sweets and desserts--with cream. The thing about the Atkins plan is that it immediately gets a bad rap from:

1) People who have *not read the book, cover to cover, and followed it*. If people haven't read the book or visited the website, they really should refrain from commenting on Atkins.

2) People who have tried to do it and failed because they were not motivated, or did not feel well on it. The diet is NOT for everyone, and most people should be guided by their doctors first, but neglect to do so.

3) People who have heard urban legand and mis-truths about the amount of protein, and what can be eaten, and they say it's unhealthy. The diet is NOT about stuffing your face with bacon and cheese.

Bottom lining it....Atkins is a low calorie, high protein diet. Most people who leave the plan gain the weight back quickly. It has to be a LIFETIME commitment and most people do not have that willpower. The diet has helped MANY people, and saying the book should be burned etc. etc. is really not helpful, nor very supportive to all those who have had success with it, and feel great and have lost weight! Any similar plan will result in weight loss. Reduction of calories and increase in physical activity will make you thinner. For further information, there are nutritional websites if you want to follow what the government says we should eat, and also the official Atkins Website: http://atkins.com/

I personally think the Atkins thing is an over-priced food fad.

HootervilleFan
05-08-2004, 01:17 PM
What do you mean "over priced"...I don't understand that... You don't even need to buy the book. You can take it from the library, or visit the website. Atkins' food products are heinously awful, and I think most people trying the energy bars and "bread" crumbs etc. buy them once and then stop. And you have to buy groceries and meats and salads anyway, unless you're a vegetarian--then obviously you'll be buying soy products--and Atkins has a vegetarian plan. You are not buying pastas, breads, potatoes, so ultimately the diet *saves* you money. You also are not spending money on chips, icecream, cakes etc. Once again, no offense, but people go on and on before they total the facts....As for fads, I wrote my college thesis 20 years ago on diet fads (which is what you meant instead of "food fads"--chef here... --a food fad is like vegetable foams and using figs on everything...) and Atkins was being used way back in the 70's. Ketogenic diets have been used for more than half a century. Maybe more.

No it wasn't. I've been dieting for a year now - since last May 10th. I lost my water weight long ago - I drink nothing but water now (and a glass of green tea in the morning). I know my body, I know how I've been doing this, I know what's going on. I wish I could have still done Atkins but I couldn't with the way I worked.

What I'm doing now works so good for me :)

I hit another milestone this morning. I had a goal of 183 pounds by next Saturday and I hit it today. I've lost 75 pounds now. I still have 25 more to go. I'm doing more, I'm walking more, I ride the cardio bike I have at home, I'm exercising. I feel wonderful. I have no clothes that fit me and no money to buy anything new but hey, I'm fitting easily into a size 14 for the first time in 15 years.

Again... ::: sigh :::: the *initial* pounds that come off on a "rapid weight loss" diet such as Atkins, Scarsdale, "Mayo Clinic", etc. is water weight. The results generally are a pound a day of fluid loss (urine). One cannot lose a pound of body *fat* per day. It is physically impossible. Weight loss is a slow process. Even people on Atkins etc. will "plateau out" and after that first rush of fluid out of the body (often mistaken for fat loss...) they start losing a pound or two a *week* (men will lose quicker..) THEN the fat burning will kick in. If you combine a higher protein diet with weight training, you will build muscle. Muscle burns more calories!

If you examine some national cuisines, such as German (Old World Jewish Cooking), or Mexican, you will find that a good deal of the food is fried, and/or quite greasy. There are some cultures that eat lots of fat, and people remain slim. Why? Portion size. We eat too much in America. That's why we're getting fatter and fatter. Now...I really truly don't understand people who are saying "I wish this diet would go away....let's burn the books....this diet is terrible..." Seriously people, does it really matter to you what others eat? I say if it's not hurting *you* why put something down? Maybe eating greasy foods works for some people. Fat consumption within the walls of a carefully followed ketogenic diet has been proven to make your BURN your own body fat. No one is talking about gorging on Big Macs to lose weight here anyway. The fast food establishments are indeed cashing in on this diet--but people who eat out in FF restaurants have to have options other than rolls and fries. They don't have to stay home. That's not fair.

In my opinion the fact that the couple was on the Atkins diet has no importance to the story.

If they paid for an ALL You can EAT they should have been allowed to eat 50 pieces of roast beef if they wanted to.

I personally don't think I would want to eat that much roast beef.

 I will agree to that. When Madison Avenue sees an opportunity, they'll milk it for everything it's worth. Better get used to it. The low-carb craze is not going anywhere right now. The thing that cracks me up is that they're attaching labels to food that obviously have no carbs! Like....bottled water! I guess the presence of ketones in one's urine renders one senseless?

 There's a lot of that kind of blanket statementing on this board. Why not tell us WHY you think buffets are dumb? I'll tell you why I dislike them. There are too many danged choices. I like to eat, but I like good food....not crappy stuff dumped into steam tables from buckets heated up in the microwave. How many three bean salads can you see in front of you before it gets monotonous? Oooooo....wait!! There's a FOUR bean salad!!! But....it's got a hunk of someone's potato salad floating in it! That's why I hate buffets.

You really shouldn't use the F word-no one should.

It's sad to see it used in lieu of what could be intelligent response and contribution to adult conversation. I think I offered some good points about The Atkins Plan...as well as pointing out its negative aspects. Again, I say as intelligent humans we can chose plans for our bodies that help us feel better. Many people's lives have been helped by Dr. Atkins and for that reason, I could never wish Atkins plan people any ill will, nor wish their diet go away. It's not affecting me directly what other people are eating.... so I believe in being positive and as supportive as possible to all manners of weight loss. May not work for ME....but hats off it it works for others!

By the way, the Atkins diet is supposed to be a SHORT-TERM diet. Not a long-term one. Nobody's listening, obviously, so now there's problems, not to mention the sudden overwhelming amount of "carb-free" food. OH MY GOD. GET OVER YOURSELF. And when you lose the X pounds you want to lose on the Atkins diet, GET OFF IT. Don't keep going on it.

By the way- if you don't like my opinion, get over it. I have a right to voice my opinion, and the way I see it, people are on the Atkins diet for all the wrong reasons...to me, I see it as a fad diet that's going to take one hell of a long time to fade away...

:) Okey doke....Miss Vicki...you have a personal vendetta with the Atkins Plan for some reason--who knows what---and I can tell, you're just gonna keep spewin' no matter what.... but I emplore you not to keep talking about a subject you're not well-versed in. Your arguments against this diet are just not grounded in any literature nor backed up by your personal experience. They are grounded in your myopic opinion and in heresay from friends, and what you have perhaps culled from slanted media opinion. Again...since I have done research on this from before you were born:

Atkins **is** meant to be a LIFE- time plan. People who are carb-sensitive and gain weight from sugars and refined, white carbs must avoid them like an alcoholic avoids booze. This diet can be HIGHLY effective for diabetics. What works for some may not work for others. If you're going to post to this thread, please try to use some facts and some *mature commentary* because I know you are capable of this.

I just took the 5 pound-5 minute diet. I recommend that to anyone looking to lose a quick couple of pounds.

Don't be sarcastic toward her. If she wants to believe in a certain
diet and its potential benefits, it is her business.

ROFL!!

I was making a joke with the 5 pound- 5 mimnute diet. That's just a euphemism for taking a dump.

I know you were...I was picking up on your sarcasm. ;) Some people better not chastise me until they get to know my twisted humour. They'd better look sharp, or lose the game. :D

All I eat is rice, pasta and noodles, and I'm skinny.

I eat very little beef.

Yeah, I eat pasta and rice too and I'm really skinny. It's just a matter of balancing foods and making sure you don't eat too much of one thing at once. But, 12 peices of beef?

I'm a vegetarian now, but when I wasn't a vegetarian I never ate 12 peices of beef at a time. I didn't even eat more than one peice.

It sounded like that couple sure loved beef. My mom had a friend that loved meat once, but she never ate that much beef. I don't think I ever heard of anyone eating that much beef before.
