generally they tape the pilot episode a few months before the rest of the season to submit to the network, so NBC knows what to change, what works, etc...

if you notice with a lot of shows, quite a bit of time has passed between the pilot and the second episodes. Friends is a perfect example, look at Courteney and Matt Leblanc's hair in the pilot, then compare it to episode 2, Courteney's was a little bit longer, and Matt's was shorter. The pilot episode of Sex And The City is another great example.

NBC is actually starting their TV season early.
