This is a easy one for me-I have to say Bookman because of all the fat jokes by Willona. I loved how she referred to him as Booga-LOL So it has nothing to do with me not liking Penny. I mean how can you not be enetertained by Bookman? His stand up act, his chemistry with Willona, and insult battles with Michael and J.J. Penny was just cute and that's all.

This is a hard one because I do like both of them but, I have to choose Bookman.

His facial expressions just cracked me up.

When I use to watch the show I would be wishing that they gave Bookman more air time.

He was hilarious.

i'm looking through some of the old threads before I joined SO. You didn't always think Bookman was entertaining. (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50051) So I expect you to end up liking Penny eventually.

When that thread was made i had not seen the eps with Bookman yet. So once i did i started enoying that character. TBS didn;t air the bookman during the fall of 2002. I didn;t see Bookman until my local UPN station started airing Good Times in January of 2003.

If you hadn't seen the episodes with Bookman at that time, you should have had no opinion about him instead of a negative one. You specifically said that Bookman was "not funny" and "unnecessary". How could you have had such an opinion about a character that you had not yet seen?

A direct quote from Solomon on a previous thread:

"I'm concerned about anyone who thinks Bookman is funny."

That's a pretty strong opinion to have when you had never even seen the episodes with him in it.

Are you concerned about yourself now?

Another direct quote from Solomon:

"My opinion-Bookman needed other characters for me to laugh-He couldn't do it alone"

How could you say that when you had not yet seen the episodes with him in it?

I hadn;t seen enough episodes of him that i could remember clearly. So maybe i shouldn't have made the statement at the time.

Hmm..Booga Bookman for me. Penny was okay, but, Bookman being the buffalo butt of Willona's fat jokes made me laugh.

With Penny, there was still the opportunity for Good Times to focus on serious social issues like child abuse. Bookman was more or less just there as comic relief, someone to be a thorn in the Evanses side. That's one reason I prefer Penny to Bookman.

I'll be honest with you. When Good Times premiered I was eight. So being a kid I naturally took to Michael and Penny and it just hasn't changed now because when I watch Good Times I see it through the eyes of my inner child.

Bookman and his man perm and pompador just cracked up. A maintenance man that had to go a beauty salon to get his "do" done. LOL. Whoever said the chemistry between him and Wologna was dead on. Remember the episode when he had his wife believing that him and Wologna were having an affair. That was the absolute funniest!!! LOLOLOL. His impressions were pretty good too, esp Ed Sullivan.

Penny - If it weren't for her drama-filled abuse storyline, she wouldn't have been memorable. Let's be honest...even for those people who aren't that up on the show know about the IRON SCENE and Janet Jackson. People don't remember Bookman and all the exchanges as much.

Who'd I like to watch more:
Penny, only when she was getting beat.
Bookman, only when he was funny.

Penny was an important character because she allowed Good Times to redeem itself from the pro-child abuse episodes with James.

Was that intentional or did it materialize that way?

Seems the threat of an buttwhoopin loomed when the James character was around.

I don't know if they were prochildabuse perhaps they were depicting a minority household. Spankings were not uncommon then. Actually it was almost acceptable as a lot of old shows (even Andry Griffith) used the threat of spanking as a tool.
