Ok,
We know he had a nice house and two cars, but sometimes he complained about the cost of ordinary things. Like in today's episode, when Richie broke his bottle of Stirrup & Saddle after shave lotion, he said, "That stuff costs $4.00 a bottle!" and remember when Laura had to hold off on reappolstering the sofa because they couldn't afford it?
So, what do you think? How much did Rob earn for being the Head Writer of the Allen Brady Show?

I've often wondered that myself, Steve! Those two instances show that they had finacial concerns like everyone does, but Laura does own a mink stole and he bought a brand new Tarantula roadster, which he described as "heavily financed," so he must have done pretty well, I think. Remember, back in 1961 $4.00 for a bottle of shaving lotion was a lot of money, which shows they have expensive taste. I think Rob was just concerned about wasting it. Just my opinion!

This is true. I also remember the episode where their accountant advises them not to buy anything within the nest month or so, unless it was absolutely necessary. This is the episode where Rob was embarrassed due to his cracked dishes.

...and how about the time he accedentally gave a blank check as a donation, but there was no money in the checking account to cover it?!  :mango :rotflmao:

Don't forget that the reason there was no money in the checking account is because Rob BOUGHT his tux for the event. He didn't feel like this was the type of affair you attend in a rented tux. I love Mrs. Huntington in that episode. "Mr. and Mrs. Petrof."

I love that episode Lolac! One of my other favorites is "It's a Shame She Married Me." They couldn't get the spring fixed in the sofa because of money issues. I crack up every time Rob sits on that part of the couch.

I think I remember reading somewhere that a person in Robs position in Televsion would have made about $28,000 a year which was good money back in 1961.:)

That sounds about right. That's actually more than good money in 1961 dollars, it's great money! Many people in 2004 would love to make that kind of money.

I guess Alan Brady must have paid below market value which is why Rob was always hurting for money.

Yes, Alan Brady seems like that type of person. Also, remember when he was offered a job with Dan Howard (I think it was) for twice the money? This was probably about $28,000. Anyone know the equation for yearly inflation? It would be nice to see exactly how much this $28,000 would be in today's money.

That dollar figure was mentioned in Vince Waldron's book I think by the set decorator, who asked Carl how much Rob would make so that he could make the rooms of the house look like one owned by someone in that specific income range.

Algebra74,
You must've read my mind.

Charlie Chan,
Thanks for the info.

Let's see. According to NASA's (http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/bu2/inflate.html) inflation calculator, that comes to a (GDP) rate of 4.917 annually between 1963 and 2004. Using that, I calculated Rob's salary as follows:
1963 yearly- $28,000.00, 2004 yearly- $109,676
1963 weekly- $538.46, 2004 weekly - $2,109.15

Remember, that's gross, not net. Rob would be in the 28% tax bracet in 2003, so as we can see, Rob & Laura would definitely still have had to budget their money and control spending to stay out of bebt and get ahead.

Incidentally, that $4.00 bottle of "Stirrup & Saddle" after shave lotion that Richie broke? It would cost Rob about $15.67 + tax to replace it today.

Steve

PS, I used the deflator (GDP) calculator instead of the cost of living (CPI) calculator. Although it would've made our couple better off, I simply don't believe salaries have kept pace with the cost of living since 1963.
