View Full Version : June Didn't Object ?
Corvetteguy 04-21-2004, 09:12 PM I was going to post this before, but the episode they showed the other day were Beaver brings Mary Tyler home from school and she falls for Wally, I was amazed that June allowed Beaver to take Mary up to his room. I know this was the conservative 60's, but I thought that it still would of been a big no no.
desilu #1 04-21-2004, 10:01 PM Yeah! And with the door closed! She allowed that but she and Ward had twin beds! Makes no sense!
junecleaver 04-22-2004, 09:33 PM oh so i'm not the only one to think this! I couldn't believe June would do that without questioning and like you said, if ward and june had to have twin beds, why did they let the girl go in Beav's room?!! Thats unbelievable even if this was the 60's
HaskellGirl 04-22-2004, 09:42 PM I think she just thought that Beaver was still young...I think if Wally brought home a girl, she wouldn't be allowed in their room. Having said that, I was actually surprised myself, but at the same times, if she DID say "I don't know if you two should be alone in the bedroom" would have been implying that something COULD happen, which might have been even worse for a family show, if that makes any sense.
desilu #1 04-22-2004, 09:46 PM Gee, I never thought of it that way. And of course being kids there would be the question...well, why not mom? Then what is she supposed to say? I get what you are saying. Good point.!;)
1954Boomer 04-23-2004, 01:45 AM Yeah, the part where Beaver tells June that he and Mary are going up to his room to play Monopoly cracks me up. But as Haskellgirl mentioned, I think June viewed Beaver as a little boy, and not the almost teenager that he was. It was sort of a reflection of how the writers continued to stretch Beaver's childhood as much as possible.
frani 04-23-2004, 07:55 AM I agree. I think it was that June never even thought that anything would happen because she still thinks of beav as a little kid.
plus to allude to something going on would hint at sexuality and that would not have been allowed.
hawaii five-o 04-23-2004, 11:50 AM Maybe "playing Monopoly" is an euphanism for something else.
LITBfan1 04-23-2004, 04:20 PM Back then...... really, who would thinkl Beaver?
CCRYDER1968 04-23-2004, 05:18 PM Beaver was June's little baby...he'd never do anything like that !
JudgeGarth 04-23-2004, 05:48 PM I was surprised that they were able to play more than one game of Monopoly in that time frame. My experience is that it takes forever to play just one game!

Maybe that was code for "necking".
Nah, probably kids that age didn't even hold hands back then! (Although I guess you could get away with touching a girl in dancing class!)
Mrs. Ducky 04-25-2004, 09:22 AM If Beaver and Mary actually played Monopoly, then they would have been up in that room all night and June would have definatley objected to that!
BlueEyes1767 04-25-2004, 01:42 PM I was also surprised that June let Beaver have a girl up in his room. Like others said, June must have still thought Beaver as her baby, but he was definitely moving out of the "girls are creepy" stage by then.

Hey Bugiddle,
I was six years old in 1963, and kissing the little five-year-old girl down the block on the lips . . . and doing other interesting things with the girl next-door.:p
