I like AM radio (especially talk radio). I tune to AM moslty for Rush Limbaugh. I also listen to Dr. Laura or Michael Savage if I am in the car when they are on. Dr. L doesn't come until 10pm here.

But Dr. Laura has not gone off the air. Maybe they moved her time in your area or your station dropped her show, but she is still broadcasting.

The only times I listen to AM radio is for the news and when I listen to a San Diego Padre game and maybe a little talk radio in the morning (although I don't listen to that as much as I used to).

You're right. Her syndicated show (which my family can't stand but that's beside the point) can be heard on a local AM station here.

I only listen to AM Radio when I'm in my car. There's a good local sport's discussion show that I listen to during baseball season, or if the Patriots are in the hunt.

I listen to Rush Limbaugh, but there are so many commercials, that I'm lucky if I can catch it. The timing has to be perfect. Usually, I'm pulling into the mall when the 15 minute block of commercials has ended and he's coming back on. Following Rush's show at 3 is a local guy named Howie Carr. He's like Rush, but talks a lot about local issues. Michael Savage follows Carr. I'm not out alone too much at night, and I don't like to listen to talk radio with others, so it's rare that I listen to Savage.

I should just turn the stupid radio on at home.

Your Rush station sounds just like mine: It is Rush until 3, local personality about local issues until 7, and then Michael Savage until 10.

Edited: whoopsie. I had the screen on "post a new message" for a while and didn't realize others answered before me that Dr. Laura is still on. I listen to her sometimes, but I don't like her. That's pretty much the extent of my AM listening.

My mom cannot stand Dr. Laura. I like her ok and I think she has good intentions, but I wouldn't call in because she is way too mean to people with serious problems.

I listen every morning to WJR Detroit. But when Rush comes on at 12:00 noon I turn it off! puke:

WJR used to be all local programming but caved into all that syndicated s**t a few years ago. Give me a break! They lost a loyal viewer and I let them know it!(A lot of good it did me:(

But at 3 PM afternoons Mitch Albom's show is on. (A local celebrity who wrote the book "Tuesdays With Morey"). His show is awesome! Comes on right after" Dork Limbaugh" So that's when I tune back into WJR.;)

Every morning I tune into WJR Detroit for local programming. But a few years ago WJR went from all day local programming to syndicated crap (Rush)puke: I emailed my complaints to the station but of course it did no good:rolleyes: So after Dork Limbaugh's show I tune back into Mitch Albom's daily program.(He's a local celebrity who has found nationwide fame as the author of "Tuesdays With Morrie") His show is awesome!:talk: :happyface

But you can bet that they gained so many more viewers though because 20 million people (myself included) tune into Rush at some point during the work week. I think 6 million are listening at any given moment.;)

Since you live in the Detroit area, do you remember CKLW's 20/20 news from the 1970's? It was dubbed "The Blood and Guts" news because it was raw and unedited, and often extremely disturbing to listen to. I believe CHUM Broadcasting from Toronto owns that station, and they are well known for that in-you-face type news. Pulse 24 does that with thier television news today. I think I can find an example of that news on the Internet if you remember it.

No I don't remember it. I used to listen to CKLW once in a while but I am actually from the Flint area so I tended to listen more to the Flint- Bay City- Saginaw area stations. I really became a WJR- Detroit fan in the 80's when the Tigers were hot. WJR broadcast all the games but alas, they don't even do that anymore! WJR ain't what it used to be....................:(

I listen to AM quite a bit... now and years ago. These days I tune into the talk shows. Back in the '70s and '80s, there were several AM oldies radio stations- KRLA, with long-time DJ Johnny Hayes, and KHJ, which became "Smokin' Oldies 930" (they played only 1955-1965 music). Those two stations are long-gone. The major "oldies" station today ('50s-'70s) is KRTH FM, but they play too much Motown (like every third song, it seems).

Looks like WJR used to focus on local events. I don't live in the Detroit area, but my friend's Dad who who works for a radio station in Monteal, remembers CKLW and a few other great radio station when he worked in the Detroit area several years ago. He says CKLW, WKNR, WJR, WWJ (Keener?), WABX, WRIF and WLLZ were the best in his opinion.

You are probably more familiar with those stations than I am. :)

Anyway, here is a sample of CKLW's 20/20 News (http://www.thebig8.net/2020.wav) in wav format. Again this type of raw Conservative News is definately not for the squeamish.

Yeah, good old Ernie. I miss him! I used to listen to WJR Detroit all day. Back in the 80's early 90's they had all local programming
which started out in the morning programs with JP McCarthy followed by several other local programs but that all changed when Disney bought the station. All my favorite radio personalities were let go and they started running all syndicated programs like Dr Laura, Rush Limbaugh(puke!) and that ilk. They lost me and other die hard listeners. I was so bummed.:( Removing all of the Tigers games was the last straw!

I grew up in Indiana listening to JP McCarthy in the morning on WJR in the 1970s
Listened to Tiger Baseball from Atlanta in the 1980s...no small feat since a local station WSB was 750 AM
I could occasionally get WJR in Denver Colorado in the late 1980s, if the weather was just right.

But by the 1990s I could never get WJR in Los Angeles .. since by then Bo Schembechler had destroyed the Tigers, it wasn't the end of the world.

I was shocked to move back to the midwest in the early 2000s and find Tigers baseball was no longer on WJR

Somebody earlier mentioned CKLW.

I remember back in the late 60s early 70's that listening to CKLW was considered an act of righteous anarchy. Several popular US artists got blacklisted from conventional "top 40" type US stations over morals issues, or content related censorship....but could still be heard on CKLW.

So, it was considered "sticking it to the establishment" by listening to contraband material from Windsor.

I cant get CKLW here anymore because of a local stations IBOC crap on 790 which wipes out 800 and 780...

FOR WHAT <<>> MAYBE 2 LISTENERS??

They gotta shut that digital crap off!!!

I like AM radio because it sounds BETTER to me than FM..

I dont like the heavy bass on alot of stations (Almost all) and this rock station here on 94.9 has an AM site @ 910 and to me it sounds 1000% better on 910! (Sounds as close to analogue as it can)

years ago would listen quite a bit to hear music of the 1950-1970's but now with computer, more tv stations than ever, I don't listen to the radio as much. Sometimes i might take a portable radio and weed the gardens while i listen.

Both Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM) are analog media. FM broadcasting has been around since at least 1933.

Yes I know buddy. FM is wider (100Khz (While AM carriers are usually about 9-10k)) and I think thats why they can broadcast this heavy bassed sh** that doesnt sound that good..

I listened to both AM and FM (mostly the latter) for a very long time, but I stopped listening to terrestrial radio more than a decade ago. Radio is so corporatized now that none of the stations have their own personality anymore and much of the local on-air talent is gone. Most of the stations in my hometown use national or hubbed jocks on FM these days and I’m almost positive there’s no longer anything local on the AM stations. It’s depressing, because with HD Radio now a thing, local radio could be super fun again.
