View Full Version : John Ritter's Thoughts on who should play his parents!
strawberryrose 04-20-2004, 01:30 PM This is an actual quote from John Ritter taken from the October 18, 2002 Entertainment Weekly Magazine:
"I'm thinking Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett as my lesbian moms. Why not?"
John Ritter, joking about who might play his parents on ABC's 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter
This is a Perfect idea since both Ms. Moore and Ms. Burnett were really good friends of John and this is what John would have wanted too!:)
Honda Rider 04-20-2004, 04:42 PM I would love to see those two play his parents. Not only were they good friends, but Mary Tyler Moore's ex-husband, Grant Tinker really helped boost John's career, when he casted him to play the tennis cleats wearing minister on the episode where Ted Knight got married. That got him a lot of attention. Also, I thought "Noises Off" which he did with Carol Burnett was one of his funniest movie roles.
strawberryrose 04-20-2004, 10:46 PM That would be pretty Cool if they could somehow bring Mary Tyler Moore & Carol Burnett as the moms for a couple of guest appearances in honor of John! Can we try to e-mail the producers to pitch this idea?:D
Chain Gang Member 04-21-2004, 09:14 AM Then who would play his dad?
Honda Rider 04-21-2004, 01:13 PM If they're his lesbian moms his dad would probably be a donator. He probably wouldn't have known him at all.
strawberryrose 04-21-2004, 03:28 PM They could have Paul's dad try to meet his son after 47 yrs or something, and realise that he came too late to finally meet his son. I could picture maybe Don Knotts or maybe Tim Conway as the sperm donor/dad.:D
strawberryrose 04-21-2004, 03:36 PM I think that Paul's mom & dad were married, but later were divorced when Paul was little, and the mom found out she really is gay and married another woman and Paul was raised by 2 moms!
Honda Rider 04-21-2004, 09:26 PM Tim Conway is an interesting choice, especially with the Carol Burnett connection. On the flipside, I think Dick Van Dyke would also be a good choice. John Ritter's physical comedy is often compared to DVD and he admitted to plagiarizing his act more than once. After his passing, Dick Van Dyke had applauded his talents.
strawberryrose 04-22-2004, 12:34 AM I Love the idea of Dick Van Dyke as Paul's dad! That would be really great especially since John's Brilliant Physical Comedy Greatness is soo much like Van Dykes! :D .
I could really picture Dick Van Dyke & Mary Tyler Moore as Paul's birth parents & Carol Burnett as the second mom OR Dick Van Dyke & Carol Burnett as the birth parents and MTM as the second mom! I could really see alot of possibilties for some really Great scenes if this really happens!
bschmale1113 04-22-2004, 09:31 PM I Love Mary Tyler Moore but she kind of young to played Paul Mother I think it so be Bea Auther
Honda Rider 04-22-2004, 10:24 PM Mary Tyler Moore is only about 12 years older than what John would be today, and Carol Burnett about 15. However, John looked good for his age, and was even scripted on the show as being 8 years younger than he was in actual life, so I think either one could pass for his mom.
MistyDoll 04-23-2004, 10:37 AM would be good as Paul's moms, because both ladies are in their mid to late 60s in real life, and Paul was in his mid-40s, so it can work out and this is what John would have wanted, so I hope they really should do this!
My other choices to play John's moms are maybe Betty White & Rue Mclanahan!

Feels like a Golden Girls theme here. I think Betty White works, mostly just because she has remained funny during a very long career. I haven't seen much of Rue Mclanahan or Bea Arthur for quite a while, so I'm not sure about them.
katefandream04 04-24-2004, 10:16 AM or there could be his mother who was a single mom ,after Paul's dad walked out on them...I think Mary Tyler Moore should be the mother.
Joeylova87 04-25-2004, 12:28 PM That would be cool if he had lesbian moms. It would be like Ben on Friends.

I certainly hope that John was joking. That's not really something that I believe in. 3's Company' was a differnt story, a straight man PRETENDING to be gay so that he could live with two girls.
