View Full Version : Before it's recent airing on N@N, when was the last time you have seen an ep of DS?
FOL & DS fan 4ever 03-17-2001, 05:25 AM This question struck me when some of you recaped those scenes of DS that N@N is not showing (which are have been cut to allow more time for commercials).
I haven't seen an episode of DS for 16 years, and I can't remember whether the last ep I saw was a rerun or first-run.
My thinking is that anyone who can clearly remember certain scenes of DS and can recognize which ones have been cut must have a really sharp memory.
So my question here is- when was the last time Diff'rent Strokes was shown on ANY channel in the Unites States, whether rerun or first-run (my apologies for excluding countries outside the USA- but that's a separte question I might ask later).
Brett Ferino 03-17-2001, 04:37 PM Never ever in my life.
coily2 03-17-2001, 09:06 PM I don't think I've seen it since it's original run. When I was in college in the early 90's, I remember needing a DS fix and desperatly searching for any station that was showing it, and I came up short http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif
While I am happy that N@N is showing it again, I must admit that I am surprised. With all the tradegy that surrounds the cast of this show, I thought for sure people would just let this show die. While I feel bad for the kids' plights, I'm glad they didn't. It's nice to see it on the tube again!
Pavan 03-17-2001, 10:00 PM I saw it twice on SGN in 1999. But before that since the early 90's when WNYW (my local FOX) use to show it everyday!
Devastation26 03-17-2001, 11:23 PM I had never seen it until N@N showed it.
APPLEI 03-17-2001, 11:49 PM I THINK IT WAS LATE 1989 WHEN MY LOCAL STATION SHOWED DIFFERENT STROKES.
FOL & DS fan 4ever 03-17-2001, 11:53 PM pavanbadal,
Please xcuse my ignorance but what is SGN?
theshark8777 03-18-2001, 01:22 AM SGN is Screen Gems Network, its an hour syndication block aired on some local channels. Right now SGN in my area is showing Benson and the Jeffersons.
JohnMcMillin 03-18-2001, 02:00 AM the most recent (pre-Nick) I remember was summer 95 on the local UPN carrier. Before that, I remember ocassionally watching the reruns on the local Fox carrier (which also aired Facts and Family Ties reruns then too) around 88-89. I remember the episode that I caught in 95 was an episode from the 1984-1985 season that was sort of an homage to Ghostbusters.
Different Strokes was last seen here in Houston, TX in March, 1990. Channel 39, which is now WB 39, was airing Different Strokes from 1984-1990. After that, they took it off the air. It's funny that Silver Spoons and Webster, which had shorter runs on NBC and ABC, were easier to catch on cable and syndication, but Different Strokes would never be seen in this area until Nick decided to put it back on the air. My question would be, why would no station in the 1990's, would air this popular show? Was it because the problems that existed with Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, and Dana Plato? I really don't understand it!
IGNTBone 03-18-2001, 09:33 PM It aired on the local UPN affiliate in West Palm Beach, FL. I watched it whenever I visted my dad's place in 1998 thru 2000. Before that, WNYW in NY was my fix in the early 90's. My mom said it was my favorite show when I was little (first NBC run).
JohnMcMillin 03-18-2001, 09:33 PM the main prob was syndication. After DS had been on so long, they began phasing those reruns out in favor of Family Matters and the like, which more recently began being phased out in favor of Friends and Seinfeld among others.
I have no idea why TBS never got the show in the 90's (many of the shows TBS used to air are now on Nick and TV Land, such as Laverne & Shirley, Three's Company, I Love Lucy, etc...) or at least WGN (which aired Webster in 98-99) or another one of those channels (thank god not USA tho, which aired Facts Of Life around 7:30 am for YEARS).
At least finally it's good to finally see the episodes again. For so many years, specials about the "tragedy" of DS would run on channels like E, yet you'd never run into reruns of the show.
I also wish they would have a special on the show that focused SOLELY on this show. E! had a "True Hollywood Story" about Facts Of Life that 99% of the show was based around the 1979-1988 run of the show, with brief "Where Are They Now?"'s. Yet the True Hollywood Story on DS had about 10 minutes focused on the 1978-1986 run, and the other hour and 50 mins (it was a 2 hour special) was about Gary, Todd and Dana's tragedies.
How about a special about the triumphs DS made instead of just what happened afterwards? Why not make a I Love Lucy special with 5 minutes about that shows impact, and 55 more talking about how everyone is dead now.
The Gooch 03-19-2001, 12:43 PM I went to Miami in March of 1990 and they were showing Diff'rent Strokes on TBS at the time. I only saw the Muhammad Ali episode however. Continuously, I haven't seen the show since the summer of '87 when it was playing weekday afternoons on at least a couple of the big three networks.
Devastation26 03-19-2001, 01:23 PM For a lot of people, it really has been a long time.

perezd 03-20-2001, 04:30 PM FOX of course.DS was shown everyday during the 90s. I used to see that Family Ties, and The Facts of life, Threes Company. plus Mr. Belvedere and other stuff.
It last aired around September 1998 on the UPN station here in Atlanta.. For a good while in 1997-1998 they were airing 2 episodes a day then they moved it to latenight and finally the early morning.
Zankara 04-15-2001, 10:46 AM It used to come on Baltimore Channel UPN in 1997 or 1998-1999. The only time i see it now is on Baltimore Channel where my cousins live and Nick At Nite on Nickoleon. I wish it came on more http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif

Arnold & Willis 06-09-2001, 04:32 PM Never saw it before it was on N@N.
luvinjuan1980 06-09-2001, 07:09 PM Last time I saw it was a year or two ago during Christmas time. I had taken some time off of work and I woke up one morning and it was on. It was the episode where Arnold went out on the street with Garrett Morris as Santas and later that night Garrett came back and robbed the Drummonds on Christmas Eve.

My local CBS channel had it come on evry Saturday night at 11:05pm (Central Time)
It came on right after "What's Happening!"

Slippery Dan 06-10-2001, 11:36 PM I also saw it on Screen Gems Network. I think I have it on tape from there. But before that, I remember watching it weekdays on WPHL 17. It was on at like 5pm or so. One of the episodes I remember clearly is when Sam gets kidnapped. I remember that there's a part where he's in a drug store. WPHL aired Diff'rent Strokes and Facts of Life back to back. I remember that.
willjarmon 08-06-2001, 08:46 PM The last time I saw Diff'rent Strokes before N@N was on my local ABC and FOX stations from like 1987-1990 and on FOX from 1984-1991. I do recall it being on TBS for a very short time because Three's Company came on before it.One other station showed it here 7 days a week M-f @ 5 after Girl Talk and Saturday after American Bandstand and Silver Spoons @ 4:30 and Sundays @ 6

plappy 08-15-2001, 04:38 PM On the Comedy Channel in Canada on a Saturday vintage block that included Perfect Strangers, The Tracey Ullman Show, Soap, and Roseanne. And on the Buffalo FOX affialite between 1988-1993 after the Simpsons and, yet again, Perfect Strangers and Soap.
animeboy 08-18-2001, 01:03 PM I have never heard of Diff'rent Strokes until the Revenge of 80s thing. Also, about the Revenge of the 80s, how come they kept Diff'rent Strokes and not the other shows? I sorta liked those shows, especially 227, Alf, and Silver Spoons. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif

I think that part of the reason might be because they have already been showing The Facts of Life (FOL), which is a spinoff of DS. Of couse, it doesn't make sense to me that FOL wasn't included either. Then again, I think they should have brought DS into their line-up before they ever aired FOL. As for the other shows, I have nooo idea why they didn't include them in their summer line-up...they decided to do a dumb thing by using the same sitcoms as last year for their summer marathons. But that's N@N for ya......well, I won't say anymore.
A few days after meeting Dana-1987-in Northern California I had to go to the home of a friend who had a satellite dish to watch the show. They aired the Ali episode. I scarcely ever saw it prior to that. Then I watched it a few times in'88 with my daughter on a local station in Sonoma California. I didn't see it again until N@N. The first episode I watched--Ali.

ZOLTAN 08-29-2001, 12:21 AM For those living in the Dallas area, I remeber it being shown on Ch 11, an independent station that showed Dallas Mavericks and Texas Rangers games, before it became a CBS affiliate. Then it was on Fox 33, before fox 33 became WB 33. This was all in the early 90's. They used to have a Diff'rent Strokes/Good Times block. After that It briefly appeared on UPN 21 but didn't last long. I'm glad it has found a home on Nick. I just wish they wouldn't cut up episodes!!

You met Dana? That's cool! My mother has met Muhammad Ali- at that time his name was "Cassius Clay" though (back in the 1960's).
To FOL&DS FAN: Yes, I met Dana. See post: A time with Dana.
