A new fic! Yay!!! :D This one picks up at the end of "Murder.com" (ep # 3.4), when Nate called Lily. Enjoy!

Nate Basso sat at his across from his partner. It was almost quitting time, and they were wrapping up paperwork from their newly solved case. He looked across the desk at CD. He was reminded for the millionth time how beautifult she was, inside and out. He knew that no one knew him like CD did. They were best friends, but for a long time now, Nate wished that he had more. He would have started a relationship with her in a second, but didn't think that she felt the same way. She had dated a couple other guys since they met, something that tore Nate up on the inside. He remembered the lonely night at the Anchorside several months back, when she had gone off on a trip with her then-boyfriend. It was a miserable week to him, knowing that CD was with another man.

Nate snapped back into the present and looked down at his desk, to see the slip of paper he had placed there earlier. It read: "Lily Ramirez. 555-1666." Nate had given Magda's sister, Lily, a ride home recently, and she seemed to like him. When he saw her again, she asked if he'd like to see her sometime, and gave him her number. AT the time, Nate brushed it off, because he really didn't care about her that way---all he could think of was CD. Nate looked back at CD and said, "Do you want to get some dinner?" He was really hoping that she would say yes. And if she didn't, then well.....maybe it was time to face reality and go out with someone who already wanted to.

CD looked back at him. "Can't. Have a date with the jerk. Everyone deserves a second chance," she said with a smile and stood up.

Nate clamped his jaw, looked away, and slightly nodded. 'Oh, well, I tried,' he thought.

CD put her coat on, and looked back at Nate. His head was drooped now, staring at his lap, or shoes, or the floor, or nothing---it didn't matter. It struck CD for the first time that he really enjoyed being with her, and started to feel a little guilty about turning him down. 'He looks like the ice cream just fell off his cone,' she thought. "Oh, what the hell----he IS a jerk. Jerks deserved to get cancelled. Let's go have that dinner, partner," she said and grinned.

Nate's face perked up. "Really? But don't you want to go on your date?"

"Nah, not really. You're cuter," she replied and chuckled.

Nate grinned, and suddenly felt much better. He stood up, and dropped the slip of paper with Lily's number. It drifted into the wastebasket. "So, where do you want to go?" he asked, and he place one hand on the small of her back as they left the division.

"Well, I heard about this really good little Italian place on Polk......"

Nate and CD settled in at their table for dinner. They had shared many meals together before, but this time felt, well, different. Nate, of course, loved every minute of every day that he spent with CD. CD, though, was a bit more hesitant in admitting her feelings to herself. She knew that she liked him and that they had something special. She had known since the temple bomb, and Nate was willing to die in her place. That was when she came to trust and feel secure in him, more than any other person she had ever known. They had felt a certain bombing that day, a bonding tht could not be described by mere words. That was the reason why she didn't want to screw it up.

As they were getting ready to leave dinner, CD said, "Oh, Nate, I have something for you back at my place. You left that corduroy jacket there last week, and I keep forgetting to bring it to work. You can come by and get it before you go home, if you want."

"OK, sure. I'll meet you there in a few minutes?"

"Yeah. See you soon." They smiled at each other, and then got into their respective cars.

CD and Nate met up in her building's parking garage, and walked together to her apartment. CD opened up the door and they walked inside. "You still have that key I gave you for emergencies, right?" CD checked.

Nate glanced at his key ring, and displayed one key. "Sure do," he said with a smile.

CD picked up the jacket and placed it on the table in the front hallway. "OK, here's the jacket. Would you like to stay for some coffee?" she asked.

"Yeah, thanks! That would be nice. Only if you don't mind, though. Don't put yourself out for me."

CD smiled and replied, "Well, I'm not. I just want coffee, and the polite thing to do would be to ask you if you'd like some, too."

"Ah, I see. I need you to teach me these things," he said and smiled.

"Oh, you do alright." CD made and poured the fresh, hot coffee, and handed a mug to Nate. They walked into the living room and sat down on the sofa. CD took her shoes off, and stretched her legs out on the coffee table. They started to talk about the case they had just finished, which led to other topics, which led to more topics, still. Neither even thought to look at the time. It was Friday night, and they knew that they could sleep in the next day. As the hours clicked by, Nate and CD felt closer and closer. After a while, CD scooted up next to Nate, and leaned her head on his strong, masuculine shoulder. She loved his shoulder. She loved everything about him. Subconciously, she held every guy she met up to Nate's standard.

Eventually, they each drifted off to sleep in the wee hours of the morning. CD 's head rested on Nate's shoulder, her hand on his chest, and Nate's arm stretched around her.

Nate woke up with a start, wondering where he was, and what time it was. He felt a weight on his chest, and smiled when he saw CD peacefully sleeping. She looked so content and secure. He figured that they must have fallen asleep together on her sofa. He checked his watch, and read 9:30 AM. Nate was thankful that it was their day off, or they'd be in major trouble. Even though he had spent the night at an angle on a couch, and only about 6 hours at that, he felt amazingly refreshed. He knew that it was because CD was with him. He pulled a tic tac out of his pocket, and popped it into his mouth. CD stirred a little bit, and Nate looked down at her. Her head was on his chest, and her chest was on his stomach. She moaned a little, but her eyes were still closed. "Hold me. Hold me, Nate, and never let me go," she mumbled in her sleep.

Nate's eyes widened to the size of saucers, and a smirk spread across his face. 'Well, I'll be damned,' he thought.

"Nate, I love you," she murmured again.

Nate thought his heart would melt right then and there. He wished that she could say it when she was awake. 'I love you, too, CD,' he thought. He remained perfectly still, hoping that she would say more, but she didn't.

A few minutes later, her eyelids and lashes started to flutter open. She remembered that she had fallen asleep with Nate, when she saw his arm by her face. CD sat up and looked at him, who was smiling at her. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry! I guess I fell asleep on you," she said and tried to smooth her hair. 'Great, I must look like a train wreck,' she thought. Then she remembered the dream that she'd just woken up from. She dreamed that she and Nate told each other that they loved each other, and kissed. She smiled on the inside, but when she realized that she was with Nate during that dream, her cheeks flushed.

"Oh, that's OK, I fell asleep, too. I guess I should get out of your hair, by now," Nate replied, and stood up. His clothes were a little rumpled, but he still looked good. CD noticed that he looked so sexy with the unshaven look. A little shiver ran down her spine.

"Well, my gosh, I can't let you leave hungry. I know you---you'll go fill up on junk food, with a billion fat grams and zero nutritional value. I'll make some breakfast," she said.

"Well, if you insist....." he replied with a smile.

CD laughed and got up. "You are such a dork," she giggled.

Nate just grinned and thought, 'Yeah, a dork that you're in love with.'

The next week passed as usual. Nate and CD worked perfectly together as partners, each knowing the other completely and what they would think or do. The usual flirting and friendly bantering went back and forth. Often CD would sense Nate staring at her, and she would look back at him and smile. She herself would often glance his way.

One day, over lunch, the topic of second marriages came up, since it was related to the case that they were currently working on. "Tell me, do you think you'll ever get married again?" Nate said, looking at her as he sucked his straw.

CD smiled, and squirmed a little in her chair. "I don't know...it depends on who asks me. I mean, I liked being married, but after waht a jerk Paul was, it would have to be a pretty special guy to get me back down the aisle."

"It would take a pretty special guy, huh? You might already know him.....you never know...." Nate looked directly into her eyes, and she looked back, studying his face.

After a long pause, she said, "Maybe....what about you? Would you want to get married again?"

"Well, yeah. I'd love to, with the right woman. I've always had the American dream of a wife that I'm madly in love with, kids, a house with a picket fence, a dog....."

CD smiled at his dream. Just then, as they were sitting at the table at the Anchorside, shots rang out. People started screaming and running for cover. CD and Nate looked at each other, panicked, and pulled their guns from their holsters. CD started yelling instructions to the employees and customers. "Keep your head low and run out the back!"

Nate grabbed his cell phone and called for backup. CD ran behind the bar and began shooting. Nate raced over to a half-wall room divider, and began his assault on the gunmen. CD and Nate each shot one dead, and the backup officers sprang up to arrest the others who were on the street. Terror and adrenaline surging through his body, Nate tore over to see CD. "CD! Are you OK?" he cried as he saw her.

CD was still crouching, and stood when he came up to her. A look of relief washed over her face, when she saw that he wasn't injured, either. She nodded, and they ran into each other's arms. They gripped each other tightly, their chins resting on each other's shoulders. Nate's nose was nuzzled in her hair, and he began to turn his head to face CD. She also turned her head to see him, and their faces brushed against each other. They gazed into each other's eyes, as their lips were only a hair-width's space away. They could feel each other's body heat, and trembling bodies. Nate knew how close he came to losing CD, and knew that he loved her, more than he had ever loved anyone before. CD looked into Nate's soft hazel eyes, and felt her heart melt to the consistency of the inside of an oreo. She loved him so very much, and couldn't deny it or pretend any longer. Their eyes closed as their lips met, and they continued to grip each other tight. The kiss grew more passionate, until they finally broke away for air. Their foreheads rested on each other, and they gave each other a look that said that this is what they wanted. Nate turned to her side, and held her with one arm. CD stretched one arm across his lower back and waist, their sides touching. Nate and CD then walked back to the station.

The rest of the afternoon, CD felt so happy, like she was walking on air. Meanwhile, she was surprised at herself. She also wonderd how Nate felt about it. She knew that he had feelings for her, but she didn't know what he thought beyond that. Nate, too, was wondering what to do. He was ecstatic about the kiss, and at the thought of CD loving him, as she'd said in her sleep. He knew that deep down she loved him, but hoped that she wouldn't get scared and cool off.

It was now after 5, and CD emerged from the women's locker room with her purse, and her coat on. Nate was passing through the hallway at the same time, and stopped and smiled when he saw her. She smiled back and walked up to him. "Hey," she said and looked at him.

"Hey," he replied, and continued, "Are you all recovered from the shootout?"

"Yeah, but I won't be too eager to go back to the Anchorside anytime soon!"

"Well, that's probably just as well, since I think that they'll be out of operation for a while anyway."

"Yeah, I suppose so."


"CD....I think there's some stuff we need to talk about."

"OK....." she replied. Then she thought to herself, 'Great. I'm going to get dumped now, and it will always be uncomfortable.'

They went to a spot close to the Golden Gate Bridge, and sat down on a bench. CD tried to brace herself for a brush-off. Nate took a deep breath and began, "CD, I....that kiss was magical. I don't want to pretend anymore, I can't keep acting like you aren't the most special, important person in the world to me, which you are...."

CD smiled and felt hugely relieved. Nate gazed into her beautiful blue eyes and CD put her hand on his. Nate's hand grasped hers, and he continued. "If only you know how much I care for you, CD...."

"I do know, Nate. I care about you, too. That kiss was magical for me, too. In everything I do, if I'm working, or sleeping, or eating, or shopping, or cleaning, or whatever---all I can think of is you. Why can I only think of you?"

With that, Nate kissed her, with fire and love. CD returned the kiss, and brought her arms up under his. Nate brought his hand up to her hair and held the back of her head. His other hand rested on her back, pulling her closer to him. This kiss lasted longer than their first one.

When the kiss finally ended, Nate said in a whisper, "I think we both know why all we can think of is each other. You've always been the only one for me, CD."

CD stared at him, paused, and then said, "You are my world, Nate." With that, she kissed him again.

After the kiss, Nate breathed, "Are you hungry?"

CD replied, "Mm hmm," but thought, 'Yes, but not for food.' They stood up and walked hand in hand to the car.

Nate and CD went to dinner straight from there. They were positively giddy about their newfound love. Neither really paid attention to the food---all their attention was focused on each other. They couldn't keep from gazing at each other and smiling. Ocassionally one would challenge the other to a game of "footsie."

"Can you believe that this is actually happening?!" Nate exclaimed with a grin.

CD grinned back. "It is amazing and wonderful and exciting, isn't it?"

Nate took her hands in his and said, "I'm so lucky to have you in my life, and especially to have you care for me. I know that I certainly am not good enough for you and don't deserve you."

"Aww, Nate, yes you do! We're both lucky, and you are definately good enough for me. I'm the one who's not good enough for you. You are the sweetest guy I have ever known."

A little smile played at the corners of Nate's mouth, and he gazed at her. "You're incredible, you know that?" he said.

"Oh, stop. You're spoiling me!" CD gushed, and her cheeks turned pink.

"Good, because you should get used to it. I love spoiling you." Nate then leaned across the table and gave CD a kiss.

After dinner, CD and Nate took a walk through Alamo Square. They strolled along, hand-in-hand. They talked, laughed, and peck-kissed each other. The moonlight shone on them, illuminating their radiant faces, glowing from love. Eventually, they stopped and sat down on a bench. They looked longingly into each other's eyes and leaned in to kiss. They wrapped their arms around each other. As Nate and CD kissed, they felt their tensions of unspoken love be expressed.

When the kiss ended, CD said, "Nate, I'm really putting my heart on the line, here. I don't think I could handle it if we didn't work out. Please don't ever leave me."

"Oh, my CD, I could never leave you. We will work because I love you more than anything in the world."

CD could hardly believe what she was hearing. "I know you do.....you are always there for me, protecting me, trusting me. I know that you're very different from all the other men in my life. It's just hard to get past, you know what I mean?"

Nate nodded. "Yeah....I know what you mean. But you're a different, stronger person now. And I hate guys like those, the ones who were crummy to you. Just remember that I could never ever do anything to you but love you forever."

Then CD brought her lips to his and kissed him, softly but meaningfully. She then said, "I love you, too, Nate."

The next day at work, everyone at the division noticed that CD and Nate were in especially good moods. They seemed to be very playful with each other. They also seemed to mysteriously disappear together, too, for large periods of time.

CD stood by the file cabinet, looking for a folder. All of a sudden, Nate came up behind CD, and put one hand over her eyes and the held his other arm around her waist. CD's eyes flew open wide, and Nate whispered, "It's just me!"

She relaxed then, and Nate pulled her into an empty interrogation room. He drew the blinds closed. "What are we doing in here?" CD asked.

Nate smiled and quieted her by kissing her. He held her around the waist, and CD grasped his upper arms as they kissed. "I've never done THAT in here before," she said with a laugh.

He lauged with her. "Me neither. But there's a first time for everything."

CD caught her eyes in Nate's gaze and whispered seductively, "There sure is." They then kissed again.

Just as they were pulling away, while they were still in each other's embrace, there was a knock on the door. Nate and CD scrambled to separate, but still were pretty close when Jinny walked in with a witness. "Hi, Jinny!" CD nervously exclaimed.

"We were, just um, discussing something," Nate quickly added.

Jinny tried to suppress a smile and said, "Um.....OK. Man, you two are close. I don't think Magda and I could stand being together as much as you two are!"

"Well, you know, we're really good friends....." CD said.

"Best friends," Nate added. He and CD quickly exited the room.

"That was close," CD said.

"Oh, I don't know, I've been in closer shaves than that," Nate replied with a grin and a wink.

"Oh, shut up. You have not!" she shot back with a laugh, and rolled her eyes.

That night, Nate and CD picked up a pizza and a rental movie on DVD, and went to Nate's apartment for the evening. As they were sitting at the kitchen table, eating, CD said, "It's weird. I've had dinner here with you lots of times before, but it feels different now. But a great different. I guess it's because we're a lot more than just partners now."

"Ah, that has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?"

"What does?"

The more than just partners part."

"It sure does."

"CD, do you realize how happy you make me? Ever since the day I met you, I've looked forward to going to work, because I knew that I'd get to spend the day with you. But now, now that you've told me that you feel the same way I do, I'm the happiest man on the planet. You don't know how long I've waited for this. For YOU---someone who knows me completely and can still find a way to love me. I just hope that I can make you as happy."

"You already do....don't sell yourself short. You're amazing. I've never known any other other guy who even comes close to you. You love me, respect me, protect me, and would do anything for me. You are the only person I have ever trusted completely, and I think it's because you are the only person who has ever loved me completely," CD said earnestly. Her eyes reached into his.

"CD, I....I had no idea. I feel flattered, but I really only do what every man should do. I'm the lucky one, to have found you."

CD fought to keep back her tears of joy. She had never known that someone could love her so much. They finished in the kitchen, and then Nate led CD into the living room. He walked over the TV and picked up the DVD. "So, are you ready to see "The Majestic?" Nate asked, with a smile on his face.

"No," CD said and took the DVD out of his hands. She set it back down on top of the TV.

Nate's face fell. "What do you mean? Are you leaving already?"

"Not unless it's morning already," CD replied. A little seductive smile crossed her lips.

"Ahh, um, ah, CD....." Nate stammered as he stared at CD. CD ran her fingers through his hair with one hand, and then brushed her other hands across his back.

"What?" CD said with a grin.

Nate paused to catch his breath as he felt her touch on his skin. His mind was sent reeling. "CD....we should probably stop this now."

"It's OK, Nate.....I want to stay," CD said and pulled his closer to her. Nate's face was a hair's-width away from hers. He couldn't control himself any longer and took her in his arms and kissed her passionately. CD responded eagerly. She brought her elbows up onto Nate's shoulders and hugged his head. Nate's hands caressed her warm, slender body. His hands slipped underneath her shirt, and then began to unbutton it. CD quickly unbuttoned his shirt, too, and then tried to unbuckle his belt. Nate put his hands around her waist and lifted her up. He shuffled over a few feet to the wall. He pinned CD to the wall with his face on hers as they kissed. Their breathing became very heavy.

Between gasps and pants, Nate said, "Are you sure, CD?"

"Nate, I love you. I've never been more sure." CD then started kissing his collarbone and ripped off is belt.

"I love you, too, CD. You got it, babe." Nate kissed her again as he unhooked her bra. Then he stoped. "Wait just a minute."

"Naaaaaate....." CD whined. "Why are you stopping?"

"Just wait here for a sec. It's a surprise. You'll like it, I promise."

Nate ran into his bedroom and pulled back the covers on the bed. He lit the candles that were staggered on the nightstands and lowered the blinds. He then put on some soft jazz mood music on the CD player, and remembered that he had bought some roses for CD earlier but had forgotten to give them to her. Nate took the flowers out of the plastic and pulled the petals off the stem. Then he scattered them across the sheets. Just as he was finishing, he heard a knock on the door.

"Nate? Can I come in yet? The natives are getting restless!"

Nate grinned and walked over to the door. He opened it and said, "Oh, now, maybe a little restlessness is good for the natives in this situation!"

CD grinned at him, and then looked past him at the room. "Oh my gosh, Nate, it's gorgeous! How incredibly romantic!"

Nate shyly smiled. "You think?"

"Absolutely. I love it," CD replied and went to kiss him again. Nate wrapped his arms around her, lifted her up, and then they fell down together on the bed. They made love for hours, and then fell exhaustively asleep in each other's arms.

That was soooooooooooooooo sweet. Way to go Nate!!!!! Keep it comin' :D

LOL, you only have to say it once. I posted my question before I asked you on AOL. And well, since you DID figure out that oh-so-tricky question, ;) here's more! :D I give credit of this storyline to "Cradle Will Rock," because that's where I've taken this idea from. It fits with this fic, and I figured it would have happened anyway, whether or not CD and Nate got together earlier, so here goes.

P.S.---I just watched (AGAIN) "Cold Comfort," the ep with Nate's ex-partner. Wow---everytime I watch that ep, I love Nate and CD more......:love: How much more perfect can a TV couple get?

For the next several weeks, CD and Nate explored their new relationship. They worked days together as usual, and spent every night together. Everything was perfect. For the first time in both of their lives, everything began to fall into place.

One morning before work, Nate and CD went to a restaurant for breakfast. As they sat across from each other, eating, CD couldn't help but focus on the amount of food Nate was shoveling down his throat. While she was picking at a half a grapefruit, Nate devoured a plate of pancakes, eggs, hash browns, and bacon. CD thought to herself, 'I can't believe he is eating all that crap. Life is so unfair. Men eat a bazillion grams of fat and not gain an ounce. Here I am, eating a grapefruit, because TOAST makes my pants too tight.' She stared at his plate.

Nate sensed that she was staring at him and looked up at her. "Want some?"

"No! Yes....God I hate men," she muttered and took another bite of grapefruit.

Nate began to hack at his pancake and said, "Do you mean men in general, or just me in particular?"

"It's not fair....Do you have any idea how many calories you're eating?"

"Got me," he replied and grinned teasingly at her, his mouth full.

CD rolled her eyes and got up in disgust. "Excuse me," she said.

Nate smiled. He loved this part of their relationship. "Oh, if you see the waitress, could you ask her to bring me more butter?" he again mumbled with his mouth full of fattening food.

CD was getting very annoyed now. 'It's a good thing I love him, because he likes to drive me nuts,' she thought. Then she said sarcastically, "Sure. You want anything else with that? Bear claw? Chocolate donut?"

Nate smiled proudly. "Surprise me."

CD walked into the ladies' room, passing another woman on the way. CD opened up a stall door when she thought she heard a baby's cry. She was shocked to find a baby in a carrier seat placed on the toilet. She quickly turned around and scanned the restaurant for the woman she had passed, who was now nowhere to be seen. CD went back to the baby. A note that read "Please take care of my baby" was placed on the blanket. CD's mind raced. 'What am I going to do? I've got to get this baby to CPS. What kind of animal would abandon a newborn in a public restroom?' she thought. She picked up the basket and carried it to the table where Nate sat. She placed it on the table and said with a sweet smile, "Surprise!"

Nate stared at her, shocked. He then looked at the baby and back at her. "Um, do you have something to tell me, CD? Did we do something 9 months ago that I just forgot about?" he said, still shocked but teasing her.

"Ha, ha, very funny, Nate. Believe me, if we had done it 9 months ago, you would not have forgotten about it. Someone abandoned this baby in the bathroom!"

"Are you kidding me? It was all alone, no one around?!"

"No, Nate, I decided to kidnap someone else's baby just for kicks. Nate, read the note!"

Nate's eyes grazed over the note written in girlish, flowery handwriting. "Guess we know what WE'RE doing today. Track some woman down, and charge her with child abandonment."

"I know. I hate that. Probably some scared fifteen year old, who doesn't know about the safe harbor law."

CD and Nate took the baby to the ER to make sure that she was OK, and then went back to the division to wait for CPS. Kate held the baby for a while, as she stood next to CD and Nate's desks. "You want to hold her?" she said to CD.

"No, no. I'm not really that good with that sort of thing." she answered.

"You found her," Kate replied with a smile, and placed the baby in CD's arms.

CD had no choice but to hold the baby. She couldn't help but smile at the precious, beautiful, helpless little thing. She noticed Nate was grinning. CD stopped cooing at the baby long enough to say, "What?" to Nate.

"It's a good look on you. The whole Bonicelli, mother and child thing." CD and Nate were both grinning. Nate continued, "Have you ever thought of---"

"I have. I had my---well, I never really wanted kids," she said.

Nate's heart sank. "Why don't you want kids?" Nate asked.

CD studied his face, and answered very quietly, "Well, it wasn't me, exactly. Paul didn't want kids."

"Oh," Nate replied. He got up and walked over to CD. "Mind if I hold her for a minute?" he said, offering his arms.

"Be my guest. You were there, too," CD replied and stood up. She placed the baby in Nate's arms, and they both smiled at the baby. Nate sat down on CD's desk, and CD hopped up next to him. She put her left arm behind him to support herself, and caressed the baby's cheek with her right hand.

"We really should come up with a temporary name, other than 'Baby Jane Doe,' Nate said and looked at CD.

"Yeah, I agree. Any ideas?"

"Well, it should reflect something, a symbolic name," Nate answered. He and CD gazed at the little girl, smiled, and played with her. Nate extended his right arm to behind CD, still holding the baby with his left arm. CD and Nate sat right up next to each other, touching.

CD thought for a moment, and then looked back at Nate. "Hope," she said.

Nate smiled in agreement.

After Nate and CD conducted their investigation and found out that the baby's, whose real name was Amy, mother left her in the bathroom because she was afraid that the father would kill Amy for insurance money. Nate and CD managed to arrest the bastard, despite a very difficult and potentially dangerous chase on the rooftop of the CPS builing. After backup officers cam and took the father away, Nate came over to CD. She was still cradling the baby, who had stopped crying and fallen asleep. CD smiled at Nate, and he kissed her.

"You all right, honey?" he asked, and placed his arm around her shoulders.

"Yeah, I'm fine, but how are you? You were the one that had to take him down!"

"All in a day's work, babe. I'm a little bruised, but that's about it. Nothing too bad."

"Oooh, I'll have to kiss it and make it feel all better," she coyly cooed, with a seductive smile.

Nate grinned. "Promise?"

"Of course. Oh, and by the way, were we amazing or what? I mean, we never even talkeed about what we did just now, and yet we did it like clockwork. Me keeping the perp busy, and you being SO SMART to go a different way, and getting him from behind. Then when you knocked him down, you looked so.....(she smiled and sexily hissed) SEXY!"

Nate laughed and said, "CD, PLEASE! Can't you wait til we get home?! Try to contol yourself, woman!"

CD laughed. "Shut up! Don't you wish!"

Nate grinned, and they began to walk back to the stairs together. They both looked at the baby. "What a beautiful, sweet baby," CD said.

"She sure is. I almost hate to give her back to her mom."

"Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm glad that she's going back to her mom, but I'm also going to miss her."

"Funny, isn't it?"

"Is what funny?" CD asked.

"It's just that, this time yesterday, we didn't even know that she existed, and now, well.....she really makes me think." Nate looked at CD, with the provoking expression that he often gave her.

CD looked at him, but didn't bite. "Yeah," she replied. They took Amy back to CPS, where they waited for the mother to arrive.

After work, CD and Nate went home to CD's apartment. They took their coats off and kicked off their shoes. Nate took CD by the hand and sat down on the sofa, pulling her down on top of him. "Oh, I have waited ALL DAY for this!" he exclaimed with a grin, and CD settled on his lap.

She smiled broadly at him, and breathed, "Me, too." They kissed, tenderly, deeply, and passionately.

"I love you so much, CD," Nate whispered against her lips.

CD opened her eyes and looked into his, which were only an inch away. "I love you, too, Nate."

They kissed again, and CD laid in his arms, her back up against his chest. Nate could smell the soft scent of her hair and said, "My gosh, CD, you smell so good."

CD smiled. They sat in silence for a while, until CD said, "Nate?"

"Hmm?"

"I know we love each other, but are we going to do? Where are we headed? What do we tell people about 'us'?"

"Wow, you've been doing a lot of thinking lately!......Don't you know where we're headed? I will love you forever, baby. I want us to be together for the rest of our lives. Don't you?" Nate turned to look at her face.

CD also turned to face him. "Of course, Nate. I just needed to hear it. I love you so much, I.....I've never known anyone like you."

"And there's only one of you, CD. You're the only woman in the world for me, and thank God, I've got you."

"Boy, have you ever."

"And about the other stuff, we can tell people what and when you want."

"Awww, you're so sweet!"

"Yeah, well, don't spread that around!" Nate laughed, and CD laughed with him. "Do you think that the Captain will have a problem with us staying partners?" Nate asked.

"Oh, trust me, Nate, all the things she's bailed Jinny's butt out of, this will be like a cool,summer breeze!"

"Plus, it doesnt' hurt that you've known her for 10 years."

"Yeah, that, too!" CD grinnned and kissed him again. "Well, we should get some supper started!"

"Mmmm, and for dessert, can I have some more Candy?" Nate said with his puppy dog eyes.

CD laughed. "If you play your cards right!"

Nate grinned and winked at her. "Your wish is my command."

The next day at work, CD knocked on Kate’s door and smiled at her. “Hi! Come on in,” Kate said.

“Hey. Do you have a minute?” CD asked and sat down.

“Yeah, sure. You seem to be in a good mood today!”

CD smiled. “Well, I just wanted to see if you don’t already have plans, would you like to have lunch with Nate and me today?”

“No, I don’t have plans. Lunch sounds good,” Kate replied with a smile. CD smiled at her response. “One question, though----“ Kate began.

“What?” CD said as she hesitated by the door.

“Do you and your partner always have lunch together, or just on days that end in ‘Y?’”

CD laughed and rolled her eyes. “WE will see you later.”

At 12:30, CD, Nate, and Kate sat at a table at the Anchorside, waiting for their orders. “So.....I assume this isn’t just lunch. Did you want to talk to me about something, CD?”

CD and Nate looked at each other, and Nate gave CD’s knee a little squeeze under the table. “We, uh, would both like to talk to you about something,” Nate said to Kate.

“Well, Nate and I have always gotten along really well, and done a good job together, and we have become really good friends, as you know,” CD said, slowly, thinking through every word. Nate smiled at her and nodded, reassuringly. CD continued, “....and, about a month ago, we both realized that we wanted to be more than just friends, and started seeing each other.”

“.....A lot,” Nate added.

Kate’s face showed a little surprise, but not shock. She had halfway expected that this day would come eventually. “Uh huh,” Kate mumbled.

“Captain, I love CD,” Nate said, and he and CD looked at each other. "We love each other. We realize that there are rules about partners, but we can assure you that we won't break up or let it affect our work. We would really like to remain partners."

"Wow......seeing as we're not in the office right now, let me tell you that I am SO excited for you two!" Kate responded with a grin.

CD and Nate looked at each other and smiled. "Thank you. I'm happy for us, too!" Nate said, and CD laughed.

"I know you guys. CD, you've been under my supervision for so long, I can hardly remember! And Nate, even in the amount of time you've been here, I believe that you are a great guy, and a terrific cop......Look, I'll make a deal with you two, because you're right---I've never had a better team in my division than you, and I would hate to see it split up. If you guys do your jobs right, don't spread the news around the whole department, and don't let the PDA get out of hand on the job, you can stay partners. If not, well then, we'll have to talk about a separation or dissolution of the partnership."

CD and Nate nodded in agreement. "Oh, absolutely, Captain! You don't have to worry about us!" CD replied and smiled.

"Thank you so much, Cap. You have no idea how relieved I am to here that," Nate said.

Later that day, Jinny sat in the women's locker room, straightening up her locker. CD walked in, with a little goofy grin on her face, and Jinny looked up at her and smiled back. "OK, what is it?" Jinny asked, smiling.

"What is what?" CD replied, knowing full well what she meant.

"CD, please. I've known you for a long time. Would you like to share what's been up with you and a certain Inspector lately?"

"Oh, that," CD smirked and crossed her arms.

"Yeah, that. What's up?"

CD straddled the bench, next to Jinny, and tucked her hair behind her ear. Jinny looked at her expectingly. "OK, well.....Nate and I are seeing each other."

Jinny flashed a huge smile. "Hey, that's great! Score, CD!" They laughed.

"Yeah, TELL me about it....." CD giggled.

"So----how does he kiss? I mean, amongst other things," Jinny said with a grin and a wink.

"Jinny! I can't believe you just said that!" CD laughed.

"Well, those things are important!"

"Let's just say we don't have any problems with THAT department," CD replied with a broad smile.

Jinny smiled. "And how long has this been going on? How did it FINALLY happen?"

CD told her, and Jinny grinned in response. "So, THAT would explain the little incident in the interrogation room," Jinny replied.

"Uh, yeah....I knew that we wouldn't fool you!"

Jinny laughed. "Not a chance!"

Over the next two months, Nate and CD grew in their relationship, falling even deeper in love with each other. They saw each other every day, and spent every evening together.

One Saturday night, Nate took CD out to dinner and dancing. They ate at a nice Italian restaurant, savoring every moment together. Later was dancing. They floated together across the dance floor, moving in perfect syncronation. Nate gazed at his beautiful love. He couldn't take his eyes off of her. He had her every feature memorized: her smooth, glowing skin, sparkling blue eyes, softly layered, wispy flaxen hair, long, lanky, curvaceous body, gentle hands....

CD gazed back at him. She loved him, unlike anything or anyone she had ever known. She didn't know what love was until him, just like Nate didn't know what love was until her.

"CD, you take my breath away," Nate said and smiled at her.

CD blushed and smiled back. "Then perhaps I should administer mouth-to-mouth."

"Oh, please do," he replied. With that, they looked deep into each other's eyes and kissed, with all their love and desire. During the kiss, "At Last" started to play. Nate and CD smiled at each other.

"I love you, and I love this song," CD said.

"I love you, too," Nate said. He decided that this was the perfect moment. Right there on the dance floor, he dropped to one knee and pulled a little black velvet box from his jacket pocket.

"Nate---what is this?" CD asked excitedly.

Nate grinned at her. "CD, I love you so much, and I will until the end of time." He opened the box and she gasped at the sight of the contents of it. "Please say you'll marry me?"

CD and Nate clung onto each other, lost in a world of their own. "CD, do you know how long I've dreamed of this moment?" nate asked, his cheek next to hers.

"Mmmm, I have a hunch." CD smiled at how cute he was like this. Actually, how cute he was anytime.

"By about day 3 of our partnership," he replied with a smirk and looked at her.

CD laughed. "You are amazing," she said.

Nate grinned. "Oh, don't tell me you never thought about it!"

"Would you believe that?"

"No."

"Awww, you saw right through me! And you didn't even have to shine a bright light into my eyes!"

"Well, I HAVE been a cop for quite a while, you know," Nate said with a wink.

"Yeah, yeah, tell me something I DON'T know," CD replied and grinned.

"How about you tell me? Back to my original question---did you ever think that we would become lovers, too?"

CD paused, and looked straight into his eyes. Then she said, "Yeah."

"I knew it!" Nate exclaimed happily.

"And I probably thought of it about 5 minutes after you did."

Nate flashed a devilish grin. "Come here!" he said and dipped her to the music. CD laughed, and Nate feverishly kissed her.

When that song ended, Nate said, "Come with me," and pulled CD by the hand up to the microphone at the front of the room. He whispered something to the guy in charge up there, and then grabbed the microphone.

CD stared at him, wondering what he was doing. "Nate? What are you up to?"

He just grinned at her, and began to talk into the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, I want to share something with you all tonight. And I'm not a freak---I DO have permission to do this." He held CD by the waist, and pulled her close to himself.

"Naaaaaaaate....." CD groaned, but smiled.

Nate continued. "I just asked my girlfriend, the beautiful woman standing here next to me, to marry me. She said yes!"

Everyone in the room applauded, and Nate put the microphone back. "Oh, Nate, you are so goofy and sweet and cute, and I love you!" CD said and laughed, as she put her hands on his cheeks. Nate laughed too, and kissed her. "So, when do you want to get married?" CD asked.

"However soon you're willing to," he replied with a smile.

"Haha. No, seriously."

"I am serious! OK, as long as we get married sometime soon, I'll be ecstatic. I can't wait to marry you."

"Ooooooh, a guy who's not afraid of committment. Very sexy."

"Thank you, thank you. But as far as sexiness goes, I think I have one hot tamale here with me."

"Oh, Nate! You're bad!"

"I try."

"You sure do......how does October sound? I mean, for the wedding? All the colors should be gorgeous......"

"But not as gorgeous as the bride. It sounds perfect, honey," Nate replied, and kissed her once more.

Nate and CD went back to CD's apartment after the dancing. CD put her key in the lock of the door, and opened it up. Meanwhile, Nate was behind her, caressing her arms and shoulders and kissing the back of her neck. CD giggled, and they stumbled into the apartment. She turned to face him. Nate felt a shiver go down his spine as he gazed at her and grasped her shoulders. "Oh my gosh, CD, I can't believe you're marrying me," he breathed and brought his lips crashing down onto hers.

They hugged each other tightly, and their hands started to caress each other's bodies. CD brought her ring-clad hand up into Nate's hair and ran her fingers through it. "I love you so amazingly much, Nate," CD purred against his lips.

"I love you, too, sweetheart."

"Then let's go to bed, and prove it," CD said with a grin.

"You're on," Nate replied with a grin that matched CD's. They kissed some more as they moved down the hallway to the bedroom. Clothes began to fall to the floor as quickly as they were peeled off. CD and Nate laid down on the bed together as the kisses grew more passionate. "Oh, CD, you're so beautiful," Nate exuded.

"So are you, inside and out," CD replied. Her kisses began to pepper him all the way down his chest and stomach.

"There is so much that I want to give you, so much that you deserve."

"You give me all that I could ever want, Nate. You gave me you."

Weeks flew by, and CD and Nate went to work planning their wedding. One morning at work, they were given their assignment: some possible drug traffickers were creating havoc in the city. Nate and CD went out to do questioning, as usual, and were led to believe that the perps were headquartered in this one house in the slums.

They readied themselves at the door, and held their guns. "You ready?" Nate whispered to CD, and she nodded. They had done this type of thing so many times before, but they knew it still posed some threat. "SFPD! Open up!" Nate yelled. Voices and footsteps could be heard inside, but no one answered the door.

"San Francisco Police! Open up NOW!" CD called out. She then looked to Nate, who with one swift move, kicked in the door. The place was filthy, and littered in drug paraphanelia.

CD picked up her phone to call for backup, as Nate turned around and ran around the outside of the house to the back. CD ran through to the back of the house, and out the back door. They could see 3 men about to climb the fence, and Nate and CD aimed their guns.

"SFPD! Stop and put your hands on top of your head!" Nate screamed at them.

One of the men pulled his gun, pointing it at them. CD and Nate both fired, and ran for cover. The one assailant fell the ground. Another shot at CD, but she ducked before the bullet hit her, and Nate shot him. The third man had decided to run, and Nate and CD took off after him.

After running for a minute, they lost sight of him amongst the houses and yards. They began to search, looking wherever they could, hoping to spot him. Nate glanced around one yard, but did a double take when he saw something suspicious. Sure enough, there was the man who fled, hding under a porch that was camoflaged by bushes. Before Nate could react, though, he was horrified to see CD unknowingly walk into the gunman's line of fire.

I'm sooooo sorry that I've taken so long to get back to this, especially since I left you guys on that cliffhanger. I don't like to do that, but I'm having some major personal problems atm and I haven't been in the mood for posting. Here's more.

After running for a minute, they lost sight of him amongst the houses and yards. They began to search, looking wherever they could, hoping to spot him. Nate glanced around one yard, but did a double take when he saw something suspicious. Sure enough, there was the man who fled, hding under a porch that was camoflaged by bushes. Before Nate could react, though, he was horrified to see CD unknowingly walk into the gunman's line of fire. He saw CD walk right into the range. With nothing else to do, since he didnt' have a good angle for a shot at him, Nate shoved CD out of the way. At that moment, before Nate could get himself out of the way, the gunman shot at Nate, striking him in the leg. Nate fell to the ground, and CD screamed his name. She saw the love of her life fall, and was terrified of losing him. She knew that she didn't want to live if he didn't.

CD fired at the assailant, who was instantly struck dead. CD began to sob along with her screams, and her knees buckled beneath her as she dropped to Nate's side. Blood was seeping from Nate's leg, his pants becoming saturated. Nate could feel such intense pain that he thought he would pass out. His vision was beginning to fail, but he could see CD crying above him and blubbering into her cell phone. Her free hand was caressing the side of his cheek. Nate could feel himself slipping from consciousness, but managed to whisper, "CD, I love you."

CD cried, "Nate! Don't leave me! Don't leave me! I love you so much! I can't go on without you!" With that, Nate slipped into a deep sleep.

By now, the whle area was crawling in police, and the paramedics arrived to get Nate. The paramedics moved him to a stretcher, and CD watched, still in shock and fear. "Be careful with him!" she urged. She forcefully climbed into the ambulance after him.

"Um, officer?" a young medic began.

CD cut him off abruptly. "That's INSPECTOR, as in Inspector DeLorenzo-soon-to-be-Basso, and he is my partner and my fiance. I'm staying with him, is that clear? Let's roll."

"Uh, OK," he replied, not wanting to mess with this commanding woman. The doors were closed, and CD held Nate's hand to her cheek, praying desperately that he would be fine.

Nate was rushed into the emergency room, CD following him. The ER doctor, nurses, and technicians immediately attended to him, and rushed him to surgery.

CD paced up and down the floor of the surgical waiting room. She had called everyone, including Nate's parents and sister. His parents were on vacation, and couldn't be reached. When CD called his sister Irene, she promised to come and get her the next day so she could see Nate.

Kate and Raina arrived, and they went to CD and hugged her. "Are you OK?" Raina asked.

"Not really," CD replied.

"He'll be fine, CD. It was just a leg wound, right? You watch---he will be back on his feet in a couple of days," Kate said.

CD didn't say anything but weakly nodded. "Come on, sit down," Raina urged and ushered CD to a seat.

CD sat, leaned forward, and clapsed her hands together under her chin. "This can't be happening," CD muttered, and tears sprung to her eyes. Her voice shook as she spoke. "But, of course, why shouldn't it? Nothing else in my life has worked out," CD said.

Kate rubbed her back. "That's not true. Nate will get better. He'll pull through. And things in your life have worked out. That man loves you, Cd, above anything else in the world. I don't know if you realize just how much."

"I do know," CD said.

Kate looked CD squarely in the eye, and tried to look confident. "Everything happens for a reason. This will just make your relationship stronger. Just wait---before you know it, you two will be getting married, just as you've planned. You know that saying, 'whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger?' Well, as annoying as it is.....it's true."

Jinny and Magda rushed in then. "CD! We came as soon as we could!" Jinny exclaimed, as she and Magda ran to her.

"No, thanks, that's OK, Magda," CD replied.

A nurse opened the door. "Candace DeLorenzo?" she asked the women.

CD stood up. "That's me," she said.

"Your name was on Mr. Basso's emergency card and ID. What's your relation to him?"

"I'm, uh, his fiance. We're getting married in two months. Oh, and we're also police partners," CD answered.

"OK, well, since you're his fiance, I can talk to you."

"How is Nate? Is he going to be OK?"

"Well, the doctor would have to tell you what he thinks, but it's looking pretty good."

CD placed her hand on her chest. "Oh, thank God!" she breathed.

"But I do have something to ask you. He needs a blood transfusion, and we like to always ask the family and friends first if they'd like to donate blood to the patient instead of using the blood bank. Is anyone here type A positive, that you know of?"

Kate, Jinny, Magda, and Raina looked at each other and shook their heads. "I am," CD stated firmly. "Where do we get started?"

"Are you sure, ma'am? I know that this is a difficult time for you."

"I know that I want to do anything I can to help my partner," CD replied.

"Come with me," the nurse said, and took CD down another hallway.

Raina smiled. "Yet one more examply of how perfect CD and Nate are for each other. They have the same unusual blood type." the other women smiled and nodded their heads.


Half and hour later, CD came back to the waiting room. "How's it going?" she asked as she sat down.

"OK, how are you?" Jinny asked.

"A little better, now that I've done something to help. But I just wish I knew how Nate is." They sat in silence for another 20 minutes, until the doctor emerged from behind the doors. CD jumped up. "Can you PLEASE tell me how Nate Basso is? I deserve to know." Her steely blue eyes stared into the doctor's, showing that she wasn't going to take any crap.

"Uh, absolutely, Inspector. Nate is going to be just fine in a few days."

CD covered her mouth with her hands, not able to speak. Tears of joy flowed from her eyes. Raina handed her a tissue, and CD wiped her tears.

"It was just a flesh wound. I removed the bullet--no permanent damage done. But I'd like to keep him here for several days to keep check on the recovery," the doctor continued.

"Of course," CD mumbled. "Can I see him?"

The doctor saw the desperate, pleading look on her face. "Well, OK. But just you for now."

CD looked to her colleagues, who smiled and nodded encouragingly. "Go to him, CD," Kate said. CD nodded, and followed the doctor down the hallway.

A nurse ushered CD into the recovery room. She immediately spotted Nate's familiar, comforting face and rushed to him. She knelt next to him, and slipped her hand underneath his, careful to not disturb the IV. He was still asleep from the anesthesia. A slight, sorrowful, sweet smile formed on CD's face as she gazed at the man who had stolen her heart 2 years before. She reached up to his face with her free hand, stroking his features. CD then leaned over, kissed his forehead, and then kissed his lips briefly. Nate moaned, and CD anxiously stared at him. "Nate? Are you OK?" she whispered, knowing that he probably couldn't hear her. "Nate, you're going to be OK. The doctor said that it'll be fine. Because you have to, honey. We have to get married, and be together forever. We have to watch our babies grow up together." CD hadn't thought ahead of time what she would say, but she wasn't surprised about what had just come out of her mouth. She did want to have children with Nate.

Nate's eyes began to flutter open. "CD......" he moaned.

"I'm right here," she said and caressed his cheek.

Nate looked at her and smiled. "What happened? How's my leg?"

"You just had surgery. Your leg will be as good as new, before you know it."

"What about you? Are you OK? Did you get hit?"

CD smiled, as she was reminded once again what a wonderful man he was, how much he cared for her. "I'm OK. Just worried about you."

"He was going to shoot you...." Nate trailed off.

"I know. And you risked your own life, to protect mine. Just like you did a year ago, too. I love you so much, Nate."

"I love you, too, CD," Nate said with a weak smile. He struggled to lean over to CD. He put his hand behind her neck, pulling her to him, and kissed her. She returned the kiss, remembering to savor every second of it.

A nurse walked into the room. "Oh! Sorry!" she exclaimed and turned to leave.

CD and Nate broke apart, and CD turned around. "No, that's OK," CD said.

The nurse returned. "Well, Mr. Basso, I guess you must be recovering pretty well, if you're up for kissing!" she said with a laugh. Nate smiled and stole a glance at CD, who blushed and smiled back. "Let's get you moved to a room," the nurse said.

CD stayed by Nate's side throughout the night. He slept soundly, being drugged up to deal with the pain. CD tried to get a little sleep, and dozed in and out. She tried not to sleep too heavily, because she didn't want to miss anything. Finally, around 6 am, she gave up and woke up for the day. She stared at the man lying wounded in the bed beside her. She had seen his face a billion times, but each time she loved it more. She thought to herself, 'Oh, Nate. Everyday that we've worked together, you've tried your best to protect me. And you have---even when it meant possibly sacrificing your own life. Why did it take me so damn long to realize how much you love me? Why didn't I see it a year ago?' CD reached over an stroked Nate's hair with her left hand. She noticed her engagement ring when it caught the light and sparkled. CD smiled at the thought of what that ring represented. It was Nate's promise of love and committment, forever.

Sighing, CD picked up the remote control to catch the morning news. She turned to "Wake Up, San Francisco," which was currently giving the weather forecast. 'Why do they even bother? We have the same weather every day, year and year out,' CD wondered.

Then a news story came on and CD's ears perked up. The anchorwoman said, "And now, on 'Wake Up, San Francisco,' we have breaking news. Late yesterday afternoon, during a routine police procedure, two San Francisco police inspectors were faced with a shootout involving 3 known drug dealers. The shooters were identified as Willion Braddock, 31, Julio Gonzalez, 27, and another man known simply as Mad Dog, 25. One police inspector was wounded, but no additional imformation is available at this time. All three offenders were pronounced dead at the scene. Tune in tonight for the full story."

'Oh, geez,' CD thought. 'If anyone even tries to bother Nate for a story, I swear I'll smash his camera and kick his ass in.'

After a few minutes, Nate woke up. His eyes opened and closed a few times, focusing on CD. CD looked at him encouragingly and said, "Hey."

"Hey."

"How are you feeling?"

"Well, I've been better. But it's not too bad."

CD nodded. "You seemed to have slept pretty well."

"Yeah, I was pretty drugged up, I think. But you---don't tell me you've been up all night?"

"No, I got some sleep. Not a lot, but enough."

"Am I going to be OK? Be honest with me, CD. I can take it."

"You ARE going to be OK, Nate. That's what the doctor said. Yes, in a few days, you'll be able to walk again, and you can come home. And in a couple of weeks, you'll be back to your old, crazy, wonderful self." CD smiled, and Nate smiled back.

CD gave him a kiss, and then Nate said, "Are you hungry?"

"A little. Do you want something? I can go shake down a CNA for your breakfast."

Nate laughed. "Ah, your specialty. Shaking people down."

"You said it!" she laughed.

"But yeah, I'm hungry."

"Aren't you always?"

Nate pretended to pout. "Well, excuse me for wanting something to eat after I got WOUNDED in the line of duty!"

CD chuckled and patted his arm. "I'll be right back," she said and left. She came back a few minutes later with a cup of juice and a yogurt. "Here---this is what I could scrounge up for the moment. The CNA will bring some more in a bit."

"Thanks," Nate replied and took what CD had handed to him. "My gosh---what's the city paying for this, and we have to practically go hunting to get some food around here?"

"Yeah. Hospitals---what are you going to do?"

"Not stay long, that's for sure. I want to take my best girl out to a nice dinner again, soon."

"Ooooh---I like the sound of that. But you should focus on recuperating, first."

"How can I, when you're right there next to me all day?! All I can think about is what we'll do next!" Nate and CD were both grinnning.

"Well, then, I'll make it easier on you---I'm going to go home now to take a shower. I'll be back in a couple of hours, and with a surprise," CD said as she got up and then kissed him.

Nate kissed her back, and then said, "I'm looking forward to it. Hurry back!"

"I will. Can I get anything for you while I'm out?" CD put her jacket on.

"Just yourself," he replied with a grin and a wink.

"Oh, cute. But you've had that for a long time already, anyway."

CD and Nate both chuckled, and CD left. She went home and showered. She let the hot water run over her tired, sore muscles for as long as she could. Then she put on some fresh clothes---grey slacks and her crimson knit shirt. She then did her hair, put on some makeup, and ate some cereal. After that, CD went by Nate's apartment to pick up some clothes and toiletries. On the way back to the hospital, she stopped by Dunkin' Donuts to get a treat for Nate, and then went somewhere else for his surprise.

On the way back to the hospital, she stopped by Dunkin' Donuts to get a treat for Nate, and then went somewhere else for his surprise.

CD approached Nate's door and stuck her head inside. "Mind if I come in?" she said with a smile.

"I would mind it if you didn't, babe!" he said with a grin.

"Well, in that case---but I did bring that surprise I told you about."

"Well, give it to me, then!"

"OK, here she is...." CD said as she fully opened the door.

"She?" Nate asked, confused. He looked at CD with a look of bewilderment.

CD just smiled, and Nate's sister, Irene, walked in. "Hi, Nate!" she said, and carried some flowers and a card.

"Irene! Wow, you're here!" Nate exclaimed and smiled. "Did CD bring you?"

"Mm hmm. She called me yesterday, to tell me about the accident, and I asked her to see you, so she came and got me," Irene replied.

"Yeah, she's great, isn't she?" Nate said, and grinned at CD. CD blushed and smiled back at Nate.

Irene gave Nate a big hug. "How are you feeling? Does it hurt?" she asked.

"I'm feeling better, and the pain isn't too bad. But I'll be here for a couple of days yet."

"You know, being a police officer is so dangerous, I worry about you," Irene said.

"Aw, you don't have to worry about me. I can make it through anything! At least with my partner, that is," Nate added and winked at CD.

"Oh, you two make the cutest couple ever! I TOLD you two to go out, like a year and a half ago!"

Nate and CD laughed. "We should have listened to you, Irene," CD replied.

"Now, see, I DID listen to her. I just couldn't quite convice you until sometime later," Nate replied.

CD smiled and rolled her eyes.

"There! Right there! The eye roll---I try to get at least one of those every day!" Nate exclaimed.

"You dork," CD chuckled.

"Thank you, thank you, you may hold your applause for later," Nate grinned.

Irene just stared at the two of them in amazement and laughed. "OK, let me show you what else I brought you," CD said and opened up her black tote bag. She pulled out a box of donuts and placed them on the nightstand. "Donuts...."she began.

"Oh, wow. Yum! You are too good to me, CD," he said and opened up the box, removing a chocolate-frosted one.

"Well, you're too good to me, too, so we're even. And I also brought a pair of your pajamas to wear while you're here..." CD said, and pulled out a pair of blue plaid pajamas and matching robe.

"CD..." Nate said with an embarassed smile, looked and gestured at Irene. Then he looked back at CD.

"What? She's your sister, Nate---I think she's seen your pajamas before," CD said and laughed.

"Not the pajamas, CD...." he said.

CD looked at the clothing that she had handed him, and on top of the pile was some of his clean underwear. CD's eyes grew wide and her cheeks turned pink. "Ooops, sorry, Nate. I was going to wait until later to give you these!" CD replied.

"It's OK, Nate, I know that guys wear underwear!" Irene laughed. Nate just smiled at CD.

OMG THIS IS SO GOOD! I need more of this later..........OK NO I MEAN NOW! lol And what you talkin' bout Willis?!?!?! hehe BORING CD/Nate Fic.....BORING?!?!?!? Your fics are NEVER boring CD and Nate written or otherwise....but I am really glad it's CD and Nate. hehehehe The surprise was awesome! I totally wasn't expecting Irene that was way cool! I had no clue what it would be and you picked an awesome surprise. That's the way Lifetime writers SHOULD write, but noooo! lol And I would have read this fic at the very beginning, if I even knew about it! Besides, I don't have much time to do anything anyway. After a short visit, CD took Irene home again and returned to the hospital. When she arrived at Nate's department, CD saw some nurses arguing with a woman who held a microphone, and a man who was carrying a TV news camera. She instantly felt concerned. "Swell," CD said to herself and walked up to them. She held her badge up and said, "SFPD. What's going on here?"

"Oooooooh! You're with the police? Can I talk to you for a minute?" the woman asked, shoving the microphone into CD's face.

CD shoved the microphone back. "No! What the hell are you doing here?"

A nurse said, "They are from channel 6, and they want an interview with Inspector Basso. I told them that they couldn't see him, but they aren't taking "no" for an answer."

"Wanna bet?" CD replied, looking at the reporters with a look of disgust. "Inspector Basso is not up to an interview at this time. In fact, I even when he is, I'll save you the trouble and tell you he won't do it, anyway. So just take your camera and go."

"Well, would you give us a minute? Or his partner?"

"For the last time, no. And I AM his partner. We've been through a great ordeal the last few days, so leave us alone. Cops are people, too, and we deserve our privacy, which is something you obviously don't understand."

"But---"

"AND if you don't leave on your own power, I will be more than happy to see to it myself that you DO leave, IF you catch my drift."

She blinked at CD, and then whispered to the camera man, "Did you get any of that?"

With that, CD grabbed the camera and pitched it into the garbage can. Then she took hold of the reporter's and camera man's collars and dragged them out of the ward, depositing then on the other sides of the doors, and slammed the door in their faces. She then muttered to herself, "Some people just insist on learning the hard way."

CD decided to go get coffee for Nate and herself before going to his room, so she would have a chance to cool off. She didn't want Nate to see that she was upset, because then he would ask why, and she didn't want to bother him with it. She went to Starbuck's across the street, got a latte for herself and a decaf mocha capuccino for Nate. When she came back to Nate's room, she saw that he was asleep. She quickly tiptoed to the chair beside his bed and sat down. She placed his coffee on the nightstand and took a sip of her own. Nate began to wake up, but his eyes remained closed at first. With a smile, he said, "Mmmm....something smells good!"

CD smiled and said, "I brought you a mocha capuccino."

Nate opened his eyes and looked at her. "You're so pretty," he murmured.

CD chuckled. "Well, thank you, after hearing you say that, I think you definately need some coffee." She handed his cup to him. Nate grinned and took it.

While Nate and CD ate dinner together that night in Nate's hospital room, they had the evening news on the TV. A newscaster came on saying that they had new information on the story of the wounded police inspector and his bust. Nate stared at the TV screen in astonishment when he heard his name. "Oh, geez, what did they find out? Did they bother you, CD?" Nate said to CD as he chewed on a french fry.

"Well, let's see what exactly they found out," CD said, and they listened.

The newscaster said, "We were able to get the police inspector's captain, Kaitlyn McCafferty, to tell us about the investigation."

A clip of Kate appeared on the screen, and she stated, cooly and calmly, "Two of my inspectors were sent to a residence. They had been led to believe that some federal criminals were headquartered there. As it turnes out, they were correct, but faced unexpected circumstances when the perpetrators started an armed assault against them. One inspector was seriously injured, as a result of his sacrifice for his partner. He is stable and is expected to make a full and rapid recovery, but the San Francisco Police Department would like to thank him for his act of bravery. That's all I have for now."

Nate smiled and CD grinned at him. "Cap was great, wasn't she? And what she said was true---you were so great, protecting me like that," CD said. She reached for Nate's hand.

"She sure was. But, CD, the only choice I had was to do what I did, or let the woman that I love die. I knew what the risks were, but you're my everything. I wouldn't want to live in a world without you, anway," Nate said.

CD gazed into his eyes, and then brought her lips to his, kissing him passionately. "I wouldn't want to live in a world without you, either," she replied softly.

APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE!!!! ENCORE, ENCORE!!! STANDING O.................... Standing OVATION NOT ORGASM for you gutter mind people! lol

They sat in silence for several minutes, staring at the TV. They weren’t just watching the TV, though, but thinking. Nate had this vague, fuzzy recollection of a dream nagging at his mind. He actually wasn’t quite sure if it was a dream, or if it had really happened, and he couldn’t remember exactly what happened in it. “CD?” he said.

“Yeah?” CD replied, and looked at him with a curious expression on her face, which matched his.

“I had this dream, when I was knocked out, and it was so......strange.”

“Mmm hmm?”

“I dreamed that you were watching me, and crying, because you thought that I was dying. I remember trying so hard to tell you that I was still alive, and fine....I didn’t want you to cry. I wanted so badly to hold you in my arms and kiss your tears away.”

CD knew, of course, that what Nate was describing wasn’t a dream, but that it was real. “I wish that I could have been in your arms, too,” she said and gave a little smile. "It wasn't a dream, honey.....that was what actually happened."

"Well, I don't want you to cry about me anymore. I'm here to stay. The jaws of life couldn't keep me from spending the next 50 years with you, got it?" Nate said with a little half-smile.

"Oh, I've got it, alright," CD replied. She grinned seductively and kissing him with a burning and everlasting love.

Two days later, Nate was discharged from the hospital, and CD took him home. After another few weeks, Nate's leg finally healed and he went back to working with CD. Almost a month after that, wedding invitations began arriving in their friends' mailboxes.

It was now the day of the rehearsal dinner, the night before Nate and CD's wedding. They had their dinner at a local restaurant, expressed their appreciation to everyone, and left. It was a cool evening, and CD wore her blue 3/4 length wool peacoat. As they walked to the car, they held hands. Nate looked over at CD, whose face was illuminated by the moonlight. Her hair softly blew in the brisk sea breeze that came in off the Bay. For the millionth time, as Nate looked at her, he could just catch his breath. 'The sun rises and sets on her,' he thought to himself. He asked her, "Are you ready for tomorrow?"

"Are you kidding? I've been ready for months!" CD replied with a laugh. She looked at Nate, and felt such joy and contentment. For the first time in her life, she was in a committed relationship with a man that loved her, unconditionally, and from the depths of his heart and soul. She could tell him anything, and trust him with everything. In the past, she had always had to overlook problems in men. With Nate, all she had to overlook was his quirky sense of humor, which she loved anyway. She hadn't known that she could be so in love with someone as she was with Nate.

The day of the wedding, the weather was beautiful. It was crisp and sunny, and the colors of the leaves were a magnificent rainbow of red, maroon, orange, and gold. The sunlight streamed through the trees and illuminated then. The wedding was set to take place at an orchard, under a large white tent in a clearing by the trees.

Guests were congregating and chatting as they found their seats. Kate acted as a mother hen, making sure that everything was going smoothly and that everyone was doing his or her job. The string quartet began to play. Classical music drifted through the air. White lights were strung across the interior of the tent, and white gauzy fabric was draped along the insides of the tent. Each chair was slipcovered in white, and a torch light stood at the end of each row. Ribbons and flowers were everywhere. Nate arrived, dressed in his black tuxedo, and looked nervous but happy. He rushed around, checking to make certain that the event was going according to plan. Kate tried to calm him down a little, which fortunately did help. The bridesmaids, Jinny, Magda, and Raina, and the groomsmen began to assemble.

A few more minutes passed, and it was time to begin. Nate took his place up at the front. The music started, and the wedding procession made their way down the aisle. The guys wore black tuxedos, while the girls wore crimson long-sleeved, elegant dresses, and carried white roses. They took their places up at the front. CD appeared in the back. All the guests stood up. Nate had spotted her before anyone else did. CD’s eyes fell on Nate, and a huge smile spread across her face. She felt the most secure and confident she’d ever been, as she walked toward the man of her dreams. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that she and Nate were meant to be together for the rest of their lives. CD arrived at the front, and grinned at Nate. He looked ecstatic, and reached for her hands. She handed her bouquet to Jinny and joined hands with Nate. Her face glowed with excitement and anticipation. Nate whispered to her, “You look.......exquisite.” He couldn’t seem to to find words that lived up to what he wanted to say. Somehow, even “exquisite” wasn’t as beautiful as CD. CD blushed and giggled a little.

Nate and CD completed their vows. They put the rings on each other, and CD’s slender hands clapsed around Nate’s hands. “By the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!” the minister announced. CD and Nate smiled broadly. He took her into his arms and hugrily kissed her. The guests clapped and cheered, and CD and Nate pulled back to face them.

~ 6 hours later ~

Nate and CD stood outside of their honeymoon suite. As Nate was fumbling with the card in the lock slot, CD was smilin at him and running her fingers up and down his body. “Oooooooh, CD....” he moaned and opened the door. He put his arms underneath her and picked her up, and carried her over the treshhold of the room.

CD’s eyes lit up as she scanned the suite. “Oh, wow, Nate!” she exclaimed, and he smiled and set her down softly on the bed. The bed’s covers were turned back, and the white satin sheets were covered in red rose petals. White candles were lit and placed all over the room. Soft jazz music was playing on the boom box, and a bottle of champagne was chilling in a bucket of ice nearby. Two champagne flutes set side by side on the nightstand.

“You like?” Nate aksed with a grin. “It’s beautiful. No one has ever done anything like this for me before! I love it,” she replied.

“I’m glad,” he said and kissed her. CD returned the kiss, but pulled back after a few seconds. “What is it?” Nate asked.

“Just one minute. I’m going to change into something a little more.....comfortable,” she said and smiled.

“Well, OK....” Nate said with a grin. CD went into the bathroom, and came back a minute later. Nate had poured the champagne while she was gone. He turned around when she re-entered the room. “Whoa,” he breathed at the sight of her, and handed her a glass. CD smiled at Nate’s comment. She wore a white lace teddy. They entertwined their right arms, and each took a sip from their champagne glasses. “I love you so much, sweetheart,” Nate said.

“I love you, too,” CD said and kissed him. Their kiss grew more heated, and they set their glasses down on the nightstand. Still kissing, Nate slipped off his jacket and shoes. CD’s hands removed his tie, and began to work on the shirt buttons. Soon they eased onto the bed and sang their song of love together.

The blissful lovers lay entwined together, wrapped in the smooth sheets. CD’s head rested on Nate’s strong, muscular chest, and Nate ran his fingers through her golden locks. “That was.......amazing......as always,” CD said with a sulty smile and looked at him.

“WE are amazing,’ Nate replied with a grin and kissed the top of her head.

CD gave his chest a peck kiss. “I am so happy, Nate. I’m so happy to be here with you.”

“Me too, love. Me too.” They soon drifted off to a peaceful dreamland, nestled in each other’s arms.

He smile, and looked to the right of himself at CD. She was still asleep. Nate thought about how she always looked so innocent and precious when she slept, like a little girl. What he didn't know, though, was that she only slept like that when she was with Nate, because that was the only time when she truly felt safe and protected. Nate couldn't resist giving her cheek a peck. A smile spread across CD's lips and her eyes sprung open. "I was waiting to see how long you were going to wait until you kissed me," she said with a smile.

Nate laughed in surprise. "How long have you been awake?" he asked.

"Long enough," she replied and kissed him gently on the lips.

He returned the kiss, and then pulled back. "You have no idea how happy it makes me to wake up, and see you next to me," he said.

"Oh, I think I do," CD grinned. She paused to trace her fingers through his hair, and they looked deep into each other's eyes. They brought their lips together again, feeling the jolt of electricity course through their bodies. Soon, they were celebrating their love for each other all over again.

Later that day, Nate and CD Basso flew to their honeymoon spot in Vermont. They stayed at a little bed and breakfast, called the Stradford Inn. For a week solid, they relaxed, visited local shops, went hiking on the trails, ate, slept, and made love, over and over again. It WAS their honeymoon, after all.

CD and Nate came home to their apartment to settle into married life that Saturday. They unpacked, and CD went to put some laundry into the washer. While she was gone, Nate walked into the kitchen to survey the grocery needs. He caught a glimpse of his left hand as he opened the refrigerator, and grinned at the sight of the white gold wedding band on his ring finger. He had looked at it a couple of hundred times already, but it still made his heart skip a beat whenever he saw it. Nate gave a happy sigh and picked up a pad of paper and a pen, and began writing things down. A thought came to him, and he gave a devilish grin. He flipped to a new sheet of paper and drew an eye, a heart, and the letter "U". He tore it off the pad and slipped it into CD's coat pocket.

CD returned then, and Nate grinned at her. "We, uh, should probably go grocery shopping, honey," he said.

"Oh, yeah, I almost forgot about that. I'll make a list," she replied.

Nate handed her his list. "Here is what I have already. You can just add whatever else we need."

"Wow, you started it already?!"

"Well, I had to make sure that chocolate got on there," he grinned.

"Haha, very funny," she replied and made a funny face at him. She playfully stuck her tongue out at him. CD wrote a few more things down, and then put her coat on. She stuck the list in her pocket, and she and Nate went to the car to drive to the store.

CD and Nate walked to their closest grocery store, and Nate grabbed a shopping cart. "OK, what do we need in produce...." CD said to herself as she reached into her pocket for the list. Besides the grocery list, she also felt another piece of folded-up piece of paper in her hand, and she picked it up to look at it. 'What's this?' she wondered, and Nate held his breath and smiled, waiting for her to read it. CD unfolded the note and read it. A wide smile spread across her face. It was the smile she gave when Nate did something cute or sweet. She looked at him and winked. Nate grinned and winked back. She put her arm on Nate's back, and her head on his shoulder for a few seconds. "You are so romantic!" she sighed happily.

"Hey, I do have to live up to that nickname you gave me!"

"What nickname?"

"Mr. Romantic. Remember? When I was talking about dating that stripper only because of my case?"

"Yeah, yeah, I remember," CD groaned. "And I love you, too, by the way." She smiled at his beautiful hazel-green eyes. Nate gave her a quick smooch, and they started shopping.

~ Almost a Year Later ~

CD and Nate lay asleep in their bed, early one morning. Their first anniversary was coming up soon, but were now just trying to get the last few minutes of morning's sleepy darkness. Their cell phones and guns laid on the nightstands beside them. CD's phone rang. She moaned. "What the hell is the alarm going off at 6 for?" she grumbled, and smacked the alarm clock. Then she realized that it was the phone. "Basso," she managed to croak into her cell phone.

Nate was jolted from his slumber by CD's voice and opened his eyes. "What's going on?" he mumbled in a low voice.

CD placed her hand on his stomach. The voice on the other end of the phone said, "Listen, CD, I'm sorry to wake you guys up so early, but I need you to get down to a crime scene. A kid at University of CSF turned up dead. Roomate says it was a suicide. I need you to check it out."

"OK.....we'll be there as soon as we can, Captain," CD replied and hung up. CD looked over at Nate, and stroked his cheek. "We have to get down to UCSF," she said.

Nate moaned. "Right now?" he whined and pulled the pillow over his head.

CD laughed and kissed him briefly. She started to sit up, and was hit with a wave of nausea. She got up and ran to the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. Nate heard her throwing up, so he followed her into the bathroom, just as CD flushed the toilet. "Geez, don't you knock?" she grumbled and turned her back to him to brush her teeth.

"I was worried about you. Are you OK? Are you sick?" he replied. "Nah, I never get sick. I feel fine. Really."

"CD, you just threw up. If you need to stay here, I can handle the case alone today. Maybe I'll get Raina to help me."

"I told you, Nate, I'll be OK. Now we have to get ready to go."

"Well, if you insist---"

"I insist."

"But I'll be watching you."

CD smiled and rolled her eyes at Nate.

Nate and CD arrived at the crime scene. A college student lay dead on the floor of his dorm room, shot in the head and holding a gun. As Nate and CD looked down at his body, as usual, CD felt ill again at the sight of it. "Excuse me," she said and ran next door to the dorm bathroom.

Nate heard her vomiting again, and he felt very concerned for her. When CD came back, her face was all red and sweaty. Nate wrapped his arms around her and kissed her hair. "Honey.....are you OK? I think I need to take you home," Nate said.

"Nate, I just got sick because I looked at a corpse. You know that that happens to me every once in a while. It's no big deal. Hey, when we're done here, let's go grab some breakfast. I'm starved!"

Nate stared at her in shock. "You're starved?! But you just threw up----TWICE!"

"Exactly---my stomach is empty now. Let's hurry up so we can go eat.

Nate was so confused, but decided to just go with the flow. "Um, OK, honey....."

hmmmmm, what a mystery!!! ;);)

Nate and CD went to Bob Evan's for breakfast. Nate said to the waitress, "I'll take the number 3---eggs, hash browns, bacon, and a pancake."

"OK, sir. And you, ma'am?" she replied.

CD took one last glance at the menu. "Um, that sounds good. I'll have one of those, too."

Nate lifted his eyebrows and stared at CD. "What?" CD asked.

"Nothing. It's just that whenever we go out to breakfast, you always get something a little lighter," he said with a grin.

"So I decided to try eating like you for once. So sue me. Besides, I am REALLY hungry."

Nate chuckled. "Eat like me, huh? Well, we'll see about that," he said and took a slurp of coffee.

To Nate's surprise, CD cleaned her plate before he did. Then she watched him eat. "Are you going to finish that bacon?" she asked.

Nate held the bacon at the edge of his lips, and narrowed his eyes at her. 'For craps's sake! It's almost in my mouth!' he thought, but then thought better of it. He handed it to CD. "No....I'm full," he said and smiled, his teeth clenched.

CD grinned, took the bacon, and munched on it.

"I'll go pay the bill, hun," Nate said and got up. CD finished her coffee, pulled the tip out of her wallet, and left it on the table.

It was now a few minutes before 5, and CD sat at her desk, working. Her stomach rumbled, but she was too tired to tell if she was hungry. For some strange reason, she had trouble staying awake in the afternoons lately. 'Probably Nate and that hot body of his has something to do with me being tired,' she thought and smiled. Then she felt sick again, and ran for the bathroom. She pushed other cops and office workers out of the way as she ran. 'What the hell is wrong with me?' she thought.

When CD emerged from the stall, she was surprised to see Jinny standing at the sink, watching her. CD hadn't noticed that Jinny was already there when she ran into the women's room. "CD! Are you alright?" Jinny exclaimed, and placed her hand on her back.

"I think so. I-I don't know. I've just been feeling weird lately. For the last few days, I felt a little queasy, but I was OK. But today, I've thrown up 3 times."

"Wow. Maybe you should go see a doctor. You might have the flu or something."

"Oh, I don't know. I'll wait and see if it gets better on its own. It's nothing too bad. Maybe I'm just too stressed out, and I need a vacation or something. I haven't really had any time off since the honeymoon, a year ago."

"Hey, it's almost your anniversary---why don't you guys go on a second honeymoon or something?"

"Yeah, maybe. I'll check with Nate."

"Great. But, hey, in the meantime, can you do me a favor?"

"What is it?"

Jinny smiled and said, "Stay away from me for a while---whatever you have might be contagious!"

CD laughed. "Oh, shut up. Besides, I'm with Nate more than I'm with you or anyone else, and he's fine."

"Well, that's because he's built up an immunity to your germs. I mean, he'd have to, being with you so much!" The women both laughed at that, and walked back to the bullpen.

Yeah, only my twin is reading this, and I just posted last night, but i wrote some really great stuff the last couple of days and I want to get to it sooner, and besides, I'm bored AND in a good mood! So there! ;) :D

CD and Nate went home and ate dinner. They decided to watch a movie on DVD, and cuddled together on the sofa. CD pulled a quilt over their laps, and she nestled her head on Nate's shoulder. Nate draped one arm across her side, holding her snug. He glanced down at her and said, "You're looking a little pale. Are you sleepy?"

"Mmm, a little, but I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time."

They watched for a while, and CD noticed something in the movie that they were watching, "We Were Soldiers." She pointed at the screen and said, "Wow, that one guy there sure looks like you, doesn't he?"

Nate squinted at the TV and furrowed his eyebrows. "You really think so? I don't see it."

"How can you not SEE it? Look at him! He's kind of cute, too."

"I don't know, CD. He looks like a dork to me, in that uniform."

CD laughed. "Honey, it was Vietnam. They ALL wore those!"

"Yeah, yeah, sure, whatever," Nate replied with a laugh.

Soon, CD fell asleep, with her head on Nate's shoulder, as she had so many times before 'Geez, it's like my shoulder is a sleep aid,' he thought and smiled to himself. When the movie ended, Nate scooped CD up and carried her to bed. He laid her down on her side of the bed, and then crawled in on his side. He set the alarm clock for the morning, and pulled the covers over them. Nate encircled CD in his arms and fell asleep beside her.

The next morning, Nate was awakened at the sound of the alarm clock. He leaned across CD and smacked it off. He was a little surprised that CD hadn't heard it first, since it was on her side of the bed, and she always woke up first anyway. Nate kissed her cheek and brushed her hair from her face. He tucked the golden lock behind her ear. "CD.....sweetie, it's time to get up," he said and rubbed her arm. CD groaned and pulled her head under the pillow. Nate laughed and pulled the covers off of her, exposing her warm body to the cool morning air. "Come on, honey, let's go...." he said and started tickling her bare feet.

At that, CD shot up and out of bed like a firecracker. "OK! OK! I'm up!" she yelled with an exasperated smirk. "I am SO going to get you back for that," she laughed and walked towards the bathroom. She felt her stomach churn again, and she groaned. 'Not AGAIN!' she thought.

Nate heard her again and followed her into the bathroom. He held her hair back and rubbed her back. The he handed her the mouthwash. "OK, that's it, CD. We're going to the doctor," Nate said.

CD glared at him. "I don't need a doctor," she said and stepped into the shower.

Nate stared after her. Then all of a sudden, CD jumped back out of the shower, with a towel wrapped around her, and held her head over the toilet again. When she finished, she looked sheepishly at Nate and said, "Could you call my doctor and see if she can fit me in today? I have GOT to get something for this nausea. Must be something I ate."

Nate smiled, nodded, and left to make the call.

"Hey, Cap, it's Nate," Nate said into the phone after calling the doctor

"Hey, Nate. What's up?" Kate replied.

"It doesn't look like CD will be able to make it in today. She's not feeling very well, so she's got a doctor's appointment this morning."

"Gee, that's too bad. What's wrong with her?"

"I don't know. Maybe the flu."

"Well, tell her to get some rest, and that I hope she feels better soon."

"I will. And, uh, Cap?"

"What?"

"Would you mind of I took just the morning off and go with her to the doctor?"

"Not at all. Go, take your wife to the doctor, for heaven's sake. And take as long as you need. It's probably going to be a slow day, and I wouldn't put you on a case by yourself, anyway. Ive got Raina working on something for me, too, so if you want to take the whole day off, feel free."

"Wow, thanks a lot. I'll call you later to let you know what's happening."

CD sat on the edge of the examining table of her gynecologist's office. Nate was called into the room, and he now sat in a chair next to her. "Well, Mrs. Basso, we have the results back from the tests we ran. You don't have the flu, or any other virus for that matter," Dr. Gilmore said.

"Well, then, what's wrong with me? Why do I keep throwing up all the time" CD asked.

The doctor smiled. "Congratulations, folks--you're going to be parents!" she replied.

CD's jaw dropped in shock. Nate's jaw dropped as well, but then quickly pulled it into a huge grin. "Oh my gosh, CD! Did you HEAR that?! That's so fantastic!" Nate exlaimed. He jumped up, placed one arm around her waist, and kissed her cheek.

CD smiled. "Wow! I really wasn't expecting that!"

"I take it that this wasn't planned then?" the doctor asked with a smirk.

"Gosh, well, not really, but it sort of was," CD replied. The doctor looked rather confused, so CD clarified. "I mean, we did want kids eventually, so we didn't put much effort into preventing them. But I didn't think that we would get pregnant with TRYING!" CD laughed.

"I'm not surprised," Nate said with a grin. CD smirked and elbowed him.

That night, Nate took CD out to dinner for their first anniversary and to celebrate the new baby. The whole night, they were just glowing about it. They were both very surprised, but still so excited about it. Nate said, "Honey, I am SO EXCITED about our baby! It's so incredible! Can you believe that we're actually going to have a baby!?"

CD grinned and replied, "It IS pretty amazing. It's weird to think that there's this little human being growing inside of me."

Nate leaned over and gave her a nice, sweet kiss on the lips. CD eagerly returned the kiss. They were sitting in a little cozy, private booth, so they didn't care if anyone saw them. She glasped her hands together around his neck. "I love you so much, CD," Nate said.

"And I love you, too, sweetie," CD replied with a smile. "For most of my life, I never thought that I wanted to or would ever have a child, but now here we are! And I couldn't be happier about it."

"I'm so glad, sweetheart," Nate replied and then looked down across the table to try to see CD's waist. He reached over and put his hand on her belly. "Helloooooo in there!" he said.

CD laughed. "What ARE you doing?" she asked.

"I'm saying 'hi' to our baby! Hello, Baby Basso! Can you hear me? It's me, Daddy!"

"Nate, I don't think it can hear you, not yet," CD said with a giggle.

"Awww, sure he can! I am so happy you're coming to be part of our family, sweet pea! You know that nice lady that's carrying you around for the time being? That's Mommy, and I love her more than anything else in the world. Well, except you of course, that is. You and Mommy are the 2 most important people in the world to me! Now you just stay in there, nice and warm, for about 8 more months, and then you will get to come and meet us, OK?" Nate babbled.

CD laughed again. What they didn't know though, was that Raina and her date were having dinner at the table on the other side of the wall from Nate and CD.

As soon as Nate and CD left the restaurant, Raina ran into the bathroom with her cell phone.

Confetti immediately dropped on top of them, and Raina, Jinny, Magda, and Kate were standing around them, laughing and yelling, "Congratulations!" Blue and pink balloons were on Nate and CD's desks, and a banner saying "Congratulations CD and Nate" was stretched across the wall.

Nate and CD gasped in shock, and then Nate laughed. "What is this?!" CD asked, happy but also a little annoyed.

"It's about the baby! We're so happy for you guys!" Raina exclaimed.

"Well, thanks, but uh.....Raina, how did you know that I'm pregnant?" CD asked.

Raina blushed and replied, "Well, I have my ways...."

Magda piped in, "She eavesdropped on you guys at dinner last night, and then called us."

"Yeah, that'll teach you to talk in public ever again," Jinny laughed.

"You're not upset, are you?" Raina asked.

CD smiled. "No, of course not. Just surprised."

"Good, you're supposed to be surprised," Kate said.

~ 4 months later ~

CD and Nate were in the doctor's examining room, waiting for the sonogram that would tell them the baby's sex. The doctor was getting the sonogram started. Nate held CD's hand and they watched the screen. Dr. Gilmore moved the equipment across CD's swollen belly, and imaged started to appear on the screen. "And there it is!" the doctor exclaimed excitedly.

Nate and CD watched their tiny, unborn child, and gripped each other's hands tightly with joy. "Oh, my gosh. That's our baby, Nate!" CD said with a grin.

"I know. Isn't it beautiful?!" he replied, barely able to contain himself.

"Whoa, wait---what's this?" the doctor said and stared at the monitor.

Nate's heart skipped a beat. "What?" he whispered.

"Is there something wrong with my baby?" CD asked, with a panicked look on her face.

Dr. Gilmore grinned and replied, "Only if you count your baby as being twins as something wrong."

"Twins?!" CD exclaimed.

"Oh, twins, honey! That's amazing!" Nate kissed CD's cheek.

"Oh, it IS amazing!" CD added and kissed Nate on the cheek.

"Well, would you like to know the sexes of the babies?" Dr. Gilmore asked.

Nate looked at CD, and she answered, "Yes. if we're going to have twins, we'd better know the sexes!"

"OK, then.....well, the one up front is obviously a boy," the doctor said.

Nate frinned and said, "That's my boy!"

CD smirked and elbowed him.

"Hey, hey, no hitting your husband til you're in labor!" the doc laughed. "And now, if he would just move a little bit, I could see the other one....looks like he has a sister!"

"Awww....a girl," CD said softly.

"I love you so much, CD," Nate said and patted her belly.

"I love you, too, Nate."

CD and Nate went home and ate dinner. They decided to watch a movie on DVD, and cuddled together on the sofa. CD pulled a quilt over their laps, and she nestled her head on Nate's shoulder. Nate draped one arm across her side, holding her snug. He glanced down at her and said, "You're looking a little pale. Are you sleepy?"

"Mmm, a little, but I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time."

They watched for a while, and CD noticed something in the movie that they were watching, "We Were Soldiers." She pointed at the screen and said, "Wow, that one guy there sure looks like you, doesn't he?"

Nate squinted at the TV and furrowed his eyebrows. "You really think so? I don't see it."

"How can you not SEE it? Look at him! He's kind of cute, too."

"I don't know, CD. He looks like a dork to me, in that uniform."

CD laughed. "Honey, it was Vietnam. They ALL wore those!"

"Yeah, yeah, sure, whatever," Nate replied with a laugh.

OK, this is part 1 of a 2-part ending. I didn't want to keep redoing what I've written before in other fics, so I skipped a lot of stuff and decided to end it. I'm working a new fic that is very different, and I know that you all will like it. :)

~ 16 months later ~

“Smile! Can you smile for Daddy? Sure you can! Come on, Lisa, come on, Josh, flash those smiles for the camera!” Nate said, while he squinted into his digital camera. His twins were in their high chairs, each with a party hat on top of their heads. They each had a frosted cupcake with a candle in front of them.

CD squatted between the high chairs, her hands on their shoulders, and a broad grin on her face. Lisa and Joshua were more interested in their first birthday cake than smiling for a picture. “Come on, guys, smile for Daddy!” CD said with her teeth clenched, trying to keep her smile.

Finally Nate said, “OK, guys, how about this—“ then he strummed his lips with his forefinger. “Brbrbrbrbr!”

At that, the twins, as well as their mom, started laughing. Nate quickly took the shot. He exhaled a sigh of relief. CD had a huge, electric smile on her face and giggled. “Nate, you crack me up!” she laughed. CD kissed each baby on top of their heads. “Now blow, muffins. Blow out the candles for Mommy!” CD said to the kids.

Josh just stared at the flame, while his sister tried to blow. Try as she might, though, Lisa couldn’t quite get the hang of it, so CD and Nate had to blow out the candles for them. CD laughed. “Well, Nate, they obviously didn’t get your lung power.”

“Nah, they have plenty of lung power. They’re just too smart, by making us do their work for them.”

“Yeah, I must be rubbing off on them,” came Kate’s voice with a laugh from across the room. She, among other friends and family, were at CD and Nate’s new house to celebrate the babies’ birthdays.

Nate and CD laughed. “Guess so, Cap,” CD said.

“Aww, I’ve got to hold those babies!” Kate exclaimed. She reached her arm out and picked up Lisa.

“Gamma Kate!” Lisa shrieked with a grin and clapped her hands.

“How’s my baby girl and her brother?” Kate cooed at them.

“Sure you can handle both of them, Captain?” Jinny asked. The brunette was holding her own newborn son to her chest. She and Teddy had recently become engaged, and had a baby of their own.

Kate looked to Jinny. “Yeah, sure, no problem. Hey, I may be retired, but I think I can still handle a couple of little Jr. Inspectors.”

Everyone laughed at that. “Hey, make that one Jr. Inspector and a Jr. Captain!” CD laughed.

Kate smiled and rolled her eyes. “Yes, CAPTAIN CD DeLorenzo-Basso,” she groaned.

CD grinned. “Ah, that’s a nice sound,” she joked.

“Sure is, honey,” Nate said with a grin and gave CD a big kiss on the cheek. CD giggled.

“Here, Cap, let me take Joshua for you,” a very pregnant Magda offered. She scooped Joshua up and held him on her hip. “Awww, Ben, come here and see Joshua. It feels like just yesterday that you were this age!”

Ben rolled his eyes. “Mommmmmm! I’m not a baby anymore!”

“I know, Pappi, I know,” Magda sighed. “I can’t wait until I have one this age again,” she said and rubbed her protruding belly.

Nate whispered to CD, “Do you know who the father is this time?”

Magda heard, though. “GABE is the father, DUH! Geez! What do you take me for, anyway?” She paused while everyone tried to hold back their laughter. “OK, don’t answer that on second thought.....”

Then an old, familiar voice was heard from the back of the room. “Hey everybody!”

Everyone looked at the tall black woman, her husband, and their three small children that were in tow. “Hey, Angela! Glad you could make it!” CD said.

Angela was holding a baby carrier with a baby that looked about a year old in it, and a 2 ½ year old and a four year old followed her in. “Sorry we’re late. Daniel had an emergency at work,” Angela said with a smile.

“Aww, that’s OK. It’s nice that you could come anyway,” CD replied and gave her old partner a hug.

“Inspector Angela, great to see you again! I didn’t know that you and CD had kept in touch all this time!” Kate exclaimed with a smile on her face.

Angela laughed. “Hey, Captain! Great to see you again, too. But CD and I didn’t keep in touch. Our kids were in the same play group together, so that’s how we met up again.”

“Awww, that’s great! You guys have to get me the info on that playgroup—I’d love to get Teddy Jr. into it soon. You know, he’s starting to sit up now already!” Jinny said.

“Imagine my surprise, though, when I saw CD DeLorenzo with TWINS at my play group!”Angela laughed. “I thought she’d be the LAST person to have a kid!”

CD laughed, too. “We all did, Angela. But I guess I hadn’t met the right daddy yet,” CD said and winked at Nate. Nate’s cheeks turned pink and he gave a little smile.

Nate’s mom walked over to Kate. She said with a smile, “Captain McCafferty, do you mind if the other grandma holds the baby?”

“Of course not, Mrs. Basso,” Kate replied and placed Lisa in her arms. Then Kate looked at her and said, “OTHER grandma?” She had a hopeful, curious expression on her face.

“Of course,” Mrs. Basso replied with a smile. “You’re the best grandma I could hope for my grandkids. Well, besides me, of course,” she laughed and gave a quick wink.

Kate laughed. “Well, thank you very much. I feel very honored.”

“You deserve to be, Cap. You’ve always been like a mom to me, and I want you to know that I appreciate it,” CD said.

Kate opened her mouth to say something, but got choked up. A couple of tears sprang to her eyes. “Oh, come here,” she said and opened her arms. CD smiled and gave her a big hug. Then Kate gestured to Nate. “You too, Daddy.” Nate chuckled and joined in on the hug.

When they all pulled away, CD said, “Now, who’s up for some of that cake?”

Awwww, nope, that wasn't the end! This post, however, is the end....I'm sad to see it go, too. And THANK SO MUCH everyone for the kind words! And Angie, awww, I'm so flattered! I'm glad that I have my own distinguishable style! :)

A few hours later, after everyone had gone home, Nate cleaned up while CD put the twins to bed. Nate was finishing up as CD came down the stairs. Nate saw her and stopped at the landing for her. CD looked at him and smiled. “Hey, beautiful,” Nate said.

CD arrived at the bottom. “Hey, handsome.” She kissed him lightly and pulled back. They gazed into each other’s eyes. Nate put his hands on CD’s waist to pull her in, and they passionately kissed. When they broke away, they walked hand in hand towards the sofa. “Whew, I finally got the kids to sleep,” CD sighed.

“Let me guess—they wouldn’t stop crying until you sang ‘Pretty Blue Eyes’ nonstop?”

CD laughed. “Yeah. Too bad neither of them got YOUR eyes.” They both exhaustively flopped down on the sofa, but then immediately bounced up again. “OUCH!” they whined simultaneously. Then they proceeded to pull a varied collection of baby toys out from between the cushions.

Nate laughed. “Ahhh, the joys of parenthood.” He sat down again, and pulled CD with him. He put his arms around her. But even the little nuisances like the toys in the cushions were what he had always dreamed of.

“I can’t believe Josh and Lisa are a year old already. It seems like just yesterday that they were born,” CD murmured.

“I know what you mean. They are growing up WAY too quickly. I wish they could stay babies forever.”

“Yeah. Now they’re walking and talking and demanding pizza for dinner!” CD laughed.

“It kind of makes me want to.....” Nate started.

“And it makes me think of maybe.....” CD added.

“Having another one?” Nate wondered aloud.

“Yeah. It would be kind of nice to have another little baby around here. And plus, this time we would actually know what we’re DOING!”

“Not to mention that it would be nice TRYING for one,” Nate grinned. He wiggled his eyebrows at the girl of his dreams.

CD laughed. “And now that I have my own office, we can try ANYTIME!” She giggled with a wink.

Nate chuckled. “Sounds great, sweetheart. But, hell, why wait for the desk? We’re all alone NOW!” Her grabbed her hand and started to pull her up with him.

“You’re on,” CD laughed. This man still amazed her everyday of her life. Nate chased CD up the stairs and caught her when they reached the top. He snatched her around the waist and spun her around as they both laughed. Then CD giggled, “Hey, whoever gets to the bed last has to make breakfast for the other.”

“Guess you’re making me waffles in the morning, blondie.”

“Oh, shut up and kiss me already.”
