Hello all, I'm new here.

And WOW! Just stumbled across this board because I had a few questions about Wings... I had no clue there were so many diehard fans -- fresh posts for a show that ended seven years ago?? Yes, I thought I was alone!! Nice to see there are so many others who appreciate good comedic timing, endearing characters and side-splitting storylines.

Been a fan of the show from Day One -- back when it followed Cheers. Just recently (since around Christmas) I've "rekindled the love," so to speak. Now my sleep schedule is completely screwed up because I actually stay up to catch the double shot of Wings every night at the crazy hour of three a.m. on Nick.

So I tripped in here and got two of my three questions answered already thanks to you fine fellow Wings fans. They were 1) Are the shows on DVD? Got my sad answer to that. 2) Where can I find info on the beautiful theme song -- ahhh, that minor note during the third whatever-you-call-it right before the plane wheels hit and skid on the ground (always goosebumps)! Saw that thread.

So I'm left with this: Was there ever any explanation as to why Helen had a southern accent? She grew up with Brian and Joe there in Nantucket, so I always found it odd... don't recall it ever having been explained. Was it? Anyone?

and yes, there were a couple of episodes where Helen mentioned moving to Nantucket from Texas when she was 11. ..so that's where her accent comes from.

I don't mean to frighten you, but you and I seem to have a bit in common. I too am one of the few and proud that saw Wings from the very beginning on NBC. Most on this board have heard my story about that over and over and are sick of it.:D

But, hey, I had to share it with you since you are one of the few that have been there from the beginning!!:) :)

I also love your description of the show because it is dead on. One of the reasons the show still works for me, 7 years after leaving NBC is because I truly think it is one of the best written sit-coms ever, and the characters were so real, with all their flaws and the casts acting and chemistry together was superb.

Anyway, to answer your most recent question, Helen was born and raised in Texas, so that was where the accent came from, and then her family moved to Nantucket when she was 10 years old and she met Brian and Joe who soon became he best friends.

There is a lot of Wings knowledge on this board, so if you have any other questions I'm sure one of the fantastic posters on this board can help you out.

I've seen most, but not all, of the shows, and for some reason in all these years I never saw that "move from Texas" referenced. I'll be paying closer attention from now on!

Lost: Your story of being there "since day one" wouldn't bore me... I feel pretty silly when I bring it up to people. Seems it was outside WAY too many people's radars -- no pun intended. Sorry souls!

And Krista: That trout line is one of my absolute favorites from the show... I have quoted that in the weirdest circumstances over the past decade. Sadly it always falls on deaf ears.

Glad to know SOMEbody knows what a tree trout might be!

Yeah, I aways forget about that line about trout living in trees, but every time I see that episode, it cracks me up! And it was just on the other night, so that's why I knew right away what "Tree Trout" was referencing to. hehehe

All us folks down in TX talk like that......mosey on down here for a spell and check it out!!! But don't make fun of our accent....that's kind of low, partner.......like the dew on a snake's belly!! :lol:

Welcome to the board :wave: I have watched Wings since about 1993, so I've been there since almost the beginning.

That's something I've always wondered myself.

Yes, Casey is the older one. I had been told once that if you move from a country or place where people speak with an accent before you are 12 you will eventually lose the accent, but If you move when you are older than 12 you will keep the accent your whole life. Maybe Casey is adpoted! LOL! :lol:

I think Casey just tried to lose the accent, and did.

I know a girl from England, and she moved here when she was 10 or something, and the kids at school made fun of her accent, so she tried really hard to lose the accent, and she did. You would never know that she was from another country.

One of my other friends is also from England, and he moved here just a few years ago, when he was about 15 or so, and I don't think he conciously tried to lose the British accent, but right now, he has absolutely no accent at all.

I think some people, whether they try to or not, lose accents quicker than other pople. But Casey seems like the type of person to want to lose a southern accent. So I think se worked on it. hehe

These girls I went to school with, they were fraternal twins, they grew up in Tennessee, and one had a heavy accent, and one had no accent.

i guess i'm content with krista's and topanga's explanations. i just remembered that one of my mom's staff said that she lost her accent through some word exercises. now she can talk with/without the southern accent and sometimes a british accent. :lol:

Fay asks Casey that in the first episode Casey was in and she told her that when you get out in the world, you tend to lose your accent.

It was from the 6th season and the episode in question is called Twisted Sister. I love some of the titles the writers gave to the episodes! I also love that this board has a episode guide so I was able to look that up!! I wish some of the other boards I go on had episode guides.:happyface

Didn't their parents split up or something and Helen lived in texas and casey in california? I dunno I heard that somewhere.


But I am proof that accents can change. I live in Tennessee, but I don't seem to have a country accent. My mom is from kentucky and she has a partially noticable accent. My dad is from michigan so he has a northern accent, which is normal. Lol. When I was younger I had a country accent, but that was when I was home and with my mom.

My theory is, you take the accent by the ppl you're around. I was around my mom alot when I was younger so I had a country accent. As I got older I started to hang out with my dad, and since he didn't have a country accent, I guess I started talking like him. Not to mention, my best friend, who I always hang out with is from California. So I might of started talking like him.

But the thing is, why didn't he start talking like me? Maybe its cause he's 2 years older.



And the reason your accent can change around the age of 12 is cause thats when puberty starts. And if your height can change rapidly, I'm pretty sure your voice can do.

Webteen, so true about the accents. When I was about 19 I met one of those dialect experts at a conference, and after we'd talked for awhile, I asked him if he could tell where I was from.

To my amazement, he said, "Southwest Virginia or North Carolina." I laughed and said, "No, but my parents are!" :)

I'd like to see him again, because I married a guy from Wisconsin, but I spend most of my time with native north Florida/south Georgia people. I'm probably all mixed up now, lol.

But you definitely can change your accent if you work on it enough, which I'm sure is what Casey did, since she didn't want to sound like a "hick" living with her rich husband and high society people.
