I will always remember the classic arguments between Archie and Irene, George, Frank, and Maude. Very entertaining moments when Archie was in the same room with any of the characters so i'm going to have to say before 1975.

Archie was funnier and the series was at its best before 1975 (with the meathead still under his roof) but Archie evolved into more of a likable human being after 1975.

I liked Archie the first few years before they softened him up.

IMHO, Archie (and All in the Family itself) was much better before Mike and Gloria moved out...

When they moved out, it destroyed the whole premise of the show...the greatest moments came with all four people living under the same roof...

In it's original run, I didn't watch the show for very long once M & G brought the house next door...and man, don't even get me started on Danielle Brisbois...what a joke

Though I liked all of AITF and ABP, I'd have to say Archie was at his funniest before 1975. Nothing quite replaced the screaming matches he had with Mike.

I agree. The show was still good but those first few years was great.

Archie was at his best before 1975. After that, he changed and it wasn't for the better.

Plus all the characters he had memorable scenes with were no longer on the show by 1976 such as

I've been watching alot of the episodes with Stephanie as a part of the cast, and Archie became nothing more than a cartoon character. He was at his best in the earlier seasons.

HUH? What does the show being better during a certain era have to do with whether someone liked a character better? Yes the Show may hae been better before 1975 but there are some people out there who probably liked the 1978/79 Archie because he was more mellow instead of the 1971/72 Archie who was not.

Also kinda like Edith during the first few episodes - she was a little "edgier" - liked her either way.

I think the show in general was better in its early years, along with Archie. And it looks like most members here agree with that.

I think the show got much softer after Archie got "civilized" shall we say.

The later years were very different. There was more between Edith and Archie. I liked to see Edith more liberated, but I was never a big fan of the Lorenzos. The early years slightly have the edge.

Really? Frank and Irene were great in scenes with Archie.

AITF & ABP were the greatest & funniest comedy of any other sitcom. They both are #1 in my opinion.

But AITF had it`s best peak pre-1975.

Yeah, I thought the episodes after 1975 were way more serious for the most part. They were well written, enjoyable episodes. But if you just want a good laugh, pop in a DVD of one of the first few seasons and you can't go wrong.
