View Full Version : What is your ethnic background?
Michael [hXc] 04-13-2004, 06:05 PM Where were your ancestors from? I am 50% Italian, 25% Portuguese, and 25% Lithuanian. What are you?
I know people of many different nationalities. One of my friends is Italian, Dutch, French Canadian, Irish, German, English, Russian, Chinese, and Polish. I am also the only person in my class with no Irish heritage. Most of my friends are Irish or Italian, and some are mixtures of all different ones. America is certainly a "melting pot"!

Michael [hXc] 04-13-2004, 06:17 PM Forgot to add, mine is actually American of Italian, Portuguese and Lithuanian decent. I was raised saying it like that because I was born in this country.
consentida 04-13-2004, 06:25 PM Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Italian. But there's a rumor that my great grandfather was from China. I dont know how true that is though. Its never been confirmed so...
Michael [hXc] 04-13-2004, 06:27 PM Nice to see people of all different ethnic backgrounds posting here! This board is a melting pot!

Yea, I'd assume in big cities, it's different. Like you have the Italians in New York, the Scandanavians in Minneapolis/Milwaukee. Almost everyone in Chicago can claim some Polish...about a million of the people in Chicago ARE 100% Polish, such as myself.

Er, I was being sarcastic.
If I had middle-eastern blood in me, I wouldn't be thanking God that I don't look it. What if you DID look middle eastern? What would be so bad about it?
Despite sterotypes, not all middle-eastern people are extremist muslim terrorists whose only goal in life is to bomb other countries and kill people.

You ARE sterotyping if you don't want to look middle-eastern. You still didn't answer my question - what's so bad about looking like you come from the region?
This is why we will never aceive world peace. Because people always relate everything back to race and sterotyping. Sad, sad world we live in...ohno:

Why would I be stereotyping against my own ethnic background? That makes no sense. And don't tell me that "people like me" are ruining chances for world peace. I made one comment that I maybe shouldn't have made, but other than that, you don't know me. If you did, I don't think you'd be accusing me of being racist and intolerant.

I never said "people like you." You only use quotes to quote something someone else said. I said people in a general sense. That's why there's no pronoun alluding to you.

Michael [hXc] 12-30-2006, 04:50 PM Allison - I don't know how I know this, but Romanians share a common ethnic and cultural background with other Europeans who speak a Romance language and descend from the ancient Romans. True the Romans did incorporate Romania into the empire and influenced the tribes that lived there, but Romanians are mostly made up of Dacians, Vlachs, and Wallonians. Those groups were more closely associated with ancient Albanians and Greeks than the Latins of western Europe. Aside from linguistics, modern day Romanians don't have much to do with Italians. Because being so geographically seperate from the other Roman pronvinces, they're heavily mixed in with neighboring Hungarians, Bulgarians, and other various slavic groups. The language, however, is 100% Romance. :) Though, with a lot of loan words from Hungarian and Slavic languages. It's also the most closely related language to original Latin, because only it and Latin have declensions in their grammar. All the other western Romance languages (French, Spanish, etc.) gave those up and adapted articles instead.
I've always found the country really fascinating, though. :D Because they, along with Hungarians and Germans, are the groups that physically seperated Slavs from each other. Which is why you have north slavs (Poles, Czechs, Ukrainians) and south slavs. (Croats, Serbs, Bulgarians) Which then causes the languages to evolve in differen't directions, culture, customs, etc.

It's the same situation with the French and the northern Italians, who have a lot of Celtic heritage, however their languages are Romance as well. Most of the populations of Spain, Portugual, Italy, France, and Romania aren't actually descended from the Romans themselves, but rather they are a mixture of the people who conquered these regions over time. There is a lot of Arab/Moorish mixture in Spain and Portugual (the Moors were a Muslim group from Morocco) and in Sicily.
I find all of this very interesting, and thanks for sharing some of your knowledge about this :) I also have Italian-speaking relatives who understand Romanian, French, Spanish, etc. because of the similarities. It's pretty cool.
I know you're from Poland, where a Slavic language is spoken. Do you understand any other Slavic languages?
Czas na Zywiec 12-30-2006, 10:55 PM Slovak I understand pretty much all of it. Czech, a little less but still a lot. I can also pick up on Ukrainian about half the time. (mostly from reading) Everything else falls behind there. So even though languages like Russian and Serbian are Slavic, I really don't understand them besides a word here and there.
Spanish and Italian are really close together. I've never even studied Italian, yet can understand so much of it through my Spanish. French however is a different world to me.
Michael [hXc] 12-30-2006, 11:16 PM I don't know this for a fact, but I'd think Spanish is much closer to Portuguese than it is to Italian. But all those are related languages, so I'd expect there to be a similarity between all of them.
What I never understood is, why can't speakers of English understand speakers of other Germanic languages without studying those languages? For example, speakers of Romance languages can understand eachother to some extent. So why can't I (or other speakers of English) consistently understand German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, etc.?
Czas na Zywiec 12-30-2006, 11:32 PM That really has to do with the fact that English is a mutt. It's mostly Germanic, but it has heavy borrowings from Latin (via French). Which is why a lot of our words are almost exact to that as Spanish, minus the ending. So English isn't really purely Germanic. People who speak German can understand Dutch pretty well and Danish, Swedish, etc. to some extent. (Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish are almost mutually intelligeble, they're really only divided politically) But those other Germanic languages didn't borrow nearly as much from Latin like English. (They say that English is up to 30% Latin based) That's how what I've heard anyway and it seems to fit the case.
Michael [hXc] 12-30-2006, 11:35 PM Another thing I never understood was why the American accent of English sounds like it does. For example, America was initially settled by English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh people from the British Isles. So was Australia, yet in the Australian accent, it actually shows. You can tell by listening to an Australian accent that it derives from English and Irish mostly. So why does the American accent sound the way it does? It could be from the settlement of non-English speakers (Italians, Germans, French, Polish, Russians, etc.) yet their accent when speaking English doesn't come close to sounding American.
Am I correct in stating that the Australian accent is English/Irish based?
dawsongirl 12-30-2006, 11:38 PM That really has to do with the fact that English is a mutt. It's mostly Germanic, but it has heavy borrowings from Latin (via French). Which is why a lot of our words are almost exact to that as Spanish, minus the ending. So English isn't really purely Germanic.
Gah...so that's why I can sit and look at German and think, how is English like this?? I used to think English and Spanish were a lot alike in certain words, but couldn't understand that because everyone always said it was Germanic, not Romantic.
Wow, this is nice to know.
Czas na Zywiec 12-30-2006, 11:53 PM Another thing I never understood was why the American accent of English sounds like it does.
Probably from the immigrant base. Canadian English is also similiar to Ameircan English and it was settled by mostly English at first, and then by Germans, Poles, Ukrainians, etc. with the exception of Quebec, which was settled by French.
Australians have an accent to our ears, but it's not really that close to British English. It was mostly settled by Brits, so theirs is closer to British English than ours, but it's still a little harsher/rougher around the edges than British. Thought Brits themselves have various accents on the island, so there really is no "standard" British accent. What we usually associate with Britain is the Cockney accent which is played up in movies and television.
Also what's interesting is the southern accent. Why did it develop different from the NE and MW accents? In this case, I still support the immigrant theory, because the South was mostly settled by English, while the other mainland European immigrants stayed in the cities like New York, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, etc.

Yea, there's word that are almost identical (Haus, Bett, Buch) and then some that English dropped in favor for French words (Turm is a tower, whereas in French it's tour)

This may sound odd, but to me the southern accent sounds like a slowed down British accent with drawn out vowel sounds. I have heard many others say this too, so it must be true. The south was settled mostly by people from southern England, while the north sounds different. I have sometimes heard a southerner speak and at first I thought their accent was British, but then I recognize it as southern and it doesn't sound English at all. I doubt you'll agree.
The NE accents (I have an eastern Massachusetts accent) are derived from East Anglia, a region in England to the northeast of London. Therefore the accent here has very similar vowel sounds to British, and the r-sound is dropped in words when following a vowel, and replaced with an 'ah' sound. My friend from Massachusetts moved to Las Vegas and she says her accent sounds somewhat British to the people there.
The midwest accents are very flat, with little intonation and I have no idea how that accent came into existence. But I do know that eastern Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, etc.) was settled by Scottish and Irish mostly, so their accents tend to sound like that. Some southern Ontario accents also sound similar to New England.

Frankly, there's no reason that question should even be asked. It's illegal in Canada because it could encourage discrimination. The only questions they asked if you're a "visible minority" - that takes in ALL colours even if you're purple!, They ask also gender and if you're "aboriginal" (that's what we now call our native Indians). And actually when you check off any of those, it's in your favour.
That said, come to think of it, how would a transgender answer the sex question! Just goes to show, ya gotta keep up with the times these days!

My family is so Americanized. My dad's family goes back to the 1800's in NYC. My grandmother grew up on the East Side of Manhattan in the late 1800's. If anything, I spent more time myself growing up on 'Irish Hill' in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, along with Norwegians and Puerto Ricans, and then when we moved to New Jersey, to a small town that was established by Puritan settlers from Connecticut in the 1600s, and growing up with some of their descendants.
I've lived with so many varieties of people, I've kind of lost my Sicilian identity, except for a few 'salty' expressions and a few special dishes that have been passed down. The younger generations of our family have intermarried with every ethnic group, so they're now Heinz 57s, with every shade of hair, eye-color, skin color and surname. We are all, even if some of us now only are 1/8th or 1/16th Sicilian, still proud of that part of our heritage, but at the same time aware that we're a product of our great melting pot, so we consider ourselves more American than anything else.

My father's family migrated to the US from Palermo so I am have Italian (Sicilian) and 1/2 Irish.
italian is a nationality, not an ethnic group. italians from different regions (like other europeans) can trace their ancestry to different regions. italy was not a unified country until 1860, it was a collection of city-states and independent kingdoms. sicily was not incorperated into italy until later.
in ancient times, the first people to settle sicily were the greeks, who established colonies along the coast. sicily later became part of the roman empire and after the roman empire fell, a semitic group of people called the saracens (also known as the moors), who came from north africa, settled in sicily and doubled the population of the island. these people have middle eastern/arab origins. they were eventually expelled from the island, and later on there was settlement in sicily by people from normandy, france. so sicilians today are a mixture of all these ethnic groups but yes, many do have middle eastern heritage.
in contrast, northern italy was inhabited by a celtic people called the gauls (who also inhabited pre-roman france) before the romans expanded into the upper half of the italian peninsula. anyone born in italy today is an italian, regardless of whether they are from sicily, lombardia, rome, campania, etc. in ancient times, people from different parts of europe didn't stay in one location - many places were conquered and people moved from place to place.
and for the record i am part sicilian and some of my relatives look very typically middle eastern, especially my dad.
