View Full Version : TV pet peeve: logos, or "bugs"
For the last eight or nine years, networks (both broadcast and cable) as well as local stations have felt the need to stamp their logos on any given corner of the screen, usually the bottom right, during the entirety of a program.
Does this get on anyone else's nerves? I mean, I don't need to be reminded I'm watching NBC, fercryinoutloud!
Nanny Fine 04-12-2004, 09:32 AM Yes it's very annoying. NBC I think (or one of the main ones) at least makes theirs transparent so that it's there but the colors of the screen, etc still show through.
The worst was N@N's be the bug last year. Like I want to see someone's face on the corner of my screen the entire TIME I'm watching a TV show.
NOT.
tvfan0101 04-12-2004, 11:39 AM The broadcast networks aren't that bad, it's when you get to the cable networks that the bugs get really annoying. Spike and fX seem to enjoy putting up bugs that not only are animated but make sound, making it hard to hear what's going on in the episode. Why? Why why why??
Additionally, the network bug being fixed in the corner means we won't be seeing network logos, or network IDs, anymore. There's no need to show the NBC peacock or the CBS eye in between shows when the darned thing is on the screen for 25 minutes. Sad.
Pentimento 04-12-2004, 12:19 PM The worst I've seen is on MTV 2. I almost never watch that channel, but I was flipping around and came across something called Carmen: A Hip Hopera (a hip-hop version of the Bizet opera), so I decided to watch for a while. The logo made it impossible, though. It kept changing color, flopping around and just making a general nuisance of itself. I had to change the channel. Too bad, since it looked like an interesting movie.
Chain Gang Member 04-12-2004, 01:13 PM Yeah,it gets in the way
Brent88 04-12-2004, 03:06 PM ABC Family is really bad about putting up huge banners that take up the bottom third of the screen advertising some stupid show that I don't care for and don't watch.
Penny Lane 04-12-2004, 04:01 PM After cable tv and satillite tv got really popular(in the 90's) the Big 3 (ABC, NBC, CBS) all started doing that. I guess to look like the competition ? And yes, I agree. It is silly . I know which station I'm watching thank you very much!

Yes, it's annoying, along with the voice overs and split screen.
Talk about pet peeves! Arghhhhhhhhhhh
I hate split screens! So many times I have wanted to find out a name of an actor and it is shrunken down so small that I can't see it! :smash: :angryfire

IMO.... it makes ALL TV fans happy.
(that is of course -- if "their" show is out in Season Sets)
Uh, Jen.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but his post is relevent. He's talking about how DVDs are bug-free. I totally agree with him. It's one of many reasons why I choose to watch my favorite shows on DVD instead of over the air.

I can put up with the bugs more than I can the split screen. I think that is one of the worst things to ever happen to television. I hate the split screen. I really hate the way stations like ABC Family do it. They make up their own credits on the side of the screen and you can't see the original credits or hear the closing theme song. That drives me nuts with Growing Pains because its closing song was so nice.:soapbox:

Well none of mine are on DVD, so I, along with many many others, have to put up with broadcast and cable television to watch. And it takes forever for the complete set to come out on DVD anyway. I will be waiting forever for Cheers seasons 6+ to come out.
Brent88 04-12-2004, 09:54 PM OMG... SPLIT SCREENS MUST DIE!!! There is NOTHING more annoying than that! :censored: :cuss:
dawsongirl 04-12-2004, 10:36 PM I despise those things. I'm not stupid...I know I'm watching GSN...or TVL...or whatthehellever...
Plus, they keep getting bigger and less transparent.
And as for split screens...GSN has become the enemy of the split screen hater. Watch the end of a show over there. You'll see what I mean.

We all know you really like DVD's, so why must you talk about it non-stop? By the way, your post has nothing to do with the thread, so don't talk about it. I haven't said much lately, but I felt I had to say something. I've even avoided a few threads to avoid having to argue with people, but please stop posting about DVD's already!
If you look.... I DONT mention DVDs in all my posts.
But I do have a good arguement that with DVDs you get NO bugs, NO split screens, and uncut episodes (uncut being on 99% of TVDVDs)
Maybe TV-DVDs aren't the cheapest way to make a TV fan happy -- but Im POSITIVE you get the best viewing experience with them.
Brent88 04-12-2004, 11:14 PM DVD's are great, but not all of us are rich and can afford it. Plus... there's not really any shows I like a lot out on DVD.

You can.... but you cant.
I know that almost everyone on this site HATES when shows are edited.... but with DVDs (99% of the time) they arent.
Im not trying to make this into a DVD/VHS thread.
But really the only advantage VHS has over DVD is that its cheaper.
Im sure that 99% of the people on these boards would like to buy Season Sets of "their" show(s) on DVD.
treky 04-14-2004, 02:33 AM VCR tapes of TV showss also aren't edited 99% of the time. Unfortunately, some of them are like "The Odd Couple".
tgc225 04-14-2004, 12:04 PM The worst static logo I have ever seen is for a local channel here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Imagine the Nick@Nite logo, but a blood red color. Now, imagine watching X-Files on that channel My eyes always float towards that big bright red logo in the corner. It's so distracting against the dark images of X-Files
Brent88 04-14-2004, 02:31 PM Channel logos don't bother me... it's just when they put :censored: banners that take up half the screen.
TVJedi 04-14-2004, 07:43 PM Hands down the most obnoxious networks operate in my area. It seems like a competition here to display the most 'crap' during the best parts of any network series on all the big networks here: CBS, FOX, ABC (I don;t watch NBC, so I dunno about them). I am fortunate to have waivers for my satellite dish to get FOX and NBC from New York and Los Angeles, so I am qualified to compare them with our locals. My locals frequently display their own logo on top of the network logo. Then in the upper right a huge storm/flood/tornado/snow graphic (any weather excuse is valid.. I am surprised they don't put a sun up there when it is sunny) is placed (and usually a rather large one at that). Furthermore they bug (and banner sometimes. YIKES!) the screen with advertizers like Papa Johns and Pierrats for a good minute, usually during the challenges during Survivor or that all important moment in your favorite sitcom, so it blocks the action. If that wasn't enough they also have a bug to indicate the time and temperature outside. They even add their own obnoxious local crawl to some shows in the morning. I prefer watching NY and LA networks because they are not nearly as insidious as they are here. I wish all my networks were distant networks. I get the feeling the reason for all the junk on my local network TV is they rely HEAVILY on advertizing.. why else take up 1/5th of the screen with huge banners for local restaurants during shows? I'll have to take some screenshots sometimes. It's just unbelievable the extent the networks in my area will go to plug as much trash on the screen as they can. Is there a way I can convince them to chill on it?

Man, sometimes I long for the '80s and early '90s. Back then, the only networks that had an on-screen logo 24/7 were CNN and VH1.

Man, that is pretty awful, TVJedi. I think the FCC should start doing some good instead of evil and put some regulations on on-screen bugs.

That's bad, but our WB station is just horrible we get this big black box that literally takes up 3/4 of the screen when they do this all we can see is the heads of the people on the show we're watching

A black box that takes up 3/4 of the screen? Are you sure you don't have Closed Captioning Text on?

Nope it's the station advertising other WB shows, they do it alot during Smallville.

Man. That's icky.
Brent88 04-15-2004, 11:23 PM I'd have to call about that. BTW: I have something similar to what TV Jedi does on my CBS station. It's not quite as bad, but they do put the time and the temperature up on the bottom left of the screen(like someone can't easily find both if they want to), and I also have seen those stupid "win a free supply" of something crap...

That is ridiculous!
dawsongirl 04-16-2004, 02:00 AM The worst I've seen was during an episode of Futurama on Fox. Right after they came back from a commercial, they flashed this HUGE American Juniors ad...right in the middle of the damn screen. It blocked the whole scene.
tvfan0101 04-16-2004, 08:20 PM TVJedi, that's pretty bad. I hate it when one of the NBC stations I get flashes winning lottery numbers on the screen. They're only up for like 10 seconds but they honestly take up about half the screen.
I also hate it when my local stations shrink the screen to show election results. Now, the fact that they shrink the screen doesn't bother me itself; it's how they do it. They don't shrink the screen to proportion, so everything looks squished.

On the off chance that it snows around here, my CBS station feels the need to shrink the screen to show the snow closings and delays. They don't just scroll it, they have to take some of the bottom and side of the screen to do it! Grrr. My CBS station also shows preview news items everday during Judge Judy. The bottom quarter of the screen goes away so that they can advertise a story for the 5:00 news. If this were not annoying enough, when they do this it changes the color of the screen. The colors become dull until the advertisement goes away.

I knew that report of what the affil did sounded familiar...I get WKYT down here too...Well, I'm supposed to. The signal's been hyper-snowy since right after the lineup rebuild in 2000.
tvfan0101 04-16-2004, 09:38 PM I captured the following while watching Andy Richter Controls The Universe in 2003 and have never seen FOX use the shrink/crawl since:

Same thing snow-wise happens here(it's so dang rare though). They also love to put the election results on the screen squeezing everything together. Annoying.
