View Full Version : Why are Americans so fat?
pismofilmdude 04-11-2004, 08:02 PM I knew smoking was bad, and that people were getting fatter, but this blew my mind. Check this out.
In the U.S., we eat more than 1,000,000 animals an hour
In 1972, we spent 3 billion a year on fast food - today we spend more than 110 billion
Left unabated, obesity will surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in America
Have any of you heard about this (http://t.soulkool.com/?126-2844)? I want to see this for sure.

Lady T 04-11-2004, 10:27 PM Why are Americans Fat?
Because of their fondness of fast food resturants...
dawsongirl 04-12-2004, 01:46 AM We're all fat because we drive cars everywhere, have too many things delivered, park too close to buildings, eat too much crap food, drink too much soda, sit in front of the TV too much, too many jobs where all people do is sit in front of a computer all day, washing machines and dishwashers....

....and we're a lot more spread out than the European countries. Everything is close and compact, so they figure they can walk everywhere and get to where they need to go. However we like to drive our gas guzzling SUV's everywhere, even if it's just to the corner store.
Silver Bullet 04-28-2004, 10:56 AM We eat too much junk food.

Brent88 05-25-2004, 01:15 PM Americans eat too much:
Fast Food
Junk Food
Unhealthy, greasy Food
Food filled with fat
AND, after we eat it, instead of going on a run to burn it off, we get into our lazy chair and watch TV or surf the internet.
I just described myself.

It amazed me how thin everybody is in England. I did see curvy people, but I didn't really see any obese people. Sheesh.
I am Him 05-25-2004, 01:34 PM I often think I'm one of the last skinny Americans left. It seems like everyone is just so huge nowadays.
After me Skinny Americans will be extinct.

Yep!! :D
You guys need to start using the barbecue more often. Start smoking your meats, rather than frying them. Use good flavored sauces on the barbecue. Avoid hamburgers and hotdogs. Start cooking chicken and pork chops for a change. You'll love the taste.
Trust me. ;)

I'm very skinny as well, my grandparents wonder if I eat, LOL, but I also learned that both my dad and grandpa were skinny when they were my age and now both are overweight. :(

*Pleasant Tomorrow* 05-25-2004, 05:20 PM Basically it's because we're always on the run and doing something, and fast food is the easiest and most convenient way to get food. People don't sit around and eat dinners as a family as much anymore, either. That's why McDonald's is trying to give out better food.

God. And I thought I was in bad shape. Its so sad when you see things like that though. Nobody should ever get that out of control. I'm sorry but its ridiculous. I mean, I'm not super thin either but thats just ridiculous.

Watch that smoking of meats. There is evidence that smoking of foods can create carcinogen (cancer-causing) substances.
If you insist on smoked food, take vitamin C- it can counter carcinogens (and nitrates, another possible carcinogen).
Chelsea 05-26-2004, 12:41 AM Folks:
Sodas
Fast Food
Lack of Exercise
Too many "Modern Conveiniences"
And did I mention the lack of exercise.
Get up, Take a Show, Eat Breakfast, DRIVE to Work (Granted, work is miles away nowadays, but you get the point), sit around doing paperwork/etc. all day, eat lunch, more paperwork, drive home, eat dinner, watch TV, sleep.
Where's the exercise in THAT?

I agree. It's too bad if the parent doesn't know better. That kid should be taken out of that home and put into a foster home or a program or something where they will be cared for. That "parent" doesn't deserve to be a parent.
I think more people are overweight because of all the fast food chain restaurants. Burger King, Dairy Queen, McDonalds, etc, etc. I know some McDonalds places have salads and more healthy choices. I wonder if the founder of McDonalds ever considered the impact fast food would have on people who didn't look after themselves. Like, before the 1960s before McDonalds existed, was there such a big weight problem as there is now?
Chelsea 05-27-2004, 06:38 AM Dang parents...too afraid of displeasing their kids.
Words have meaning...no means no. When your kid wants chips/sodas/etc. between lunch and dinner, tell them no. Sure, they'll whine and pout, that's what kids do. But your helping them in the long run.
And, in older kids/adults, just realize this. I cut out regular sodas late last year for diet ones. Without any actual excersize or dieting, I've lost twenty pounds. (With one and/or the other, no telling how much I'd lose).
Nanny Fine 05-27-2004, 06:39 AM I was skinny. All through high school. I wore a size 7/8, I ate what i wanted, never had a problem. Then I had a kid. Then I got sick with fibromyalgia. I sat around, I was depressed, I ate, I didn't exercise - and I gained a LOT of weight.
Then last year, on May 10th, I decided I had had enough. Enough A & W Burgers, Big Macs, shopping in the plus size section, not being able to go up the stairs without stopping to rest. I wanted to be back where I was before.
I started walking - I now walk 10 miles a day. I work out twice a week at the YMCA, I ride a stationary bike at home. I DO NOT EAT fast food of any sort (well sometimes I'll have a taco at taco bell "Fresco Style"), I don't drink pop, I dont eat candy/cake/cookies of any sort. I keep my fat intake low, my calories under control and I eat protein. I've lost 76 pounds now. I went to the doctor last month and they told me according to their records I had lost over 100 pounds since the last time I had been there. ONE HUNDRED POUNDS. That's as much as a person. I have 18 pounds left I have to lose but I won't ever be done. I'll just move on to another stage.
If you eat fast food, if you sit on the couch or computer chair, if you don't exercise - you will gain weight (or the majority of people will. I know there are exceptions). I was proof.
And I'm also proof that if you are determined enough you can lose it again.
Ask me how it feels to go into a store now and shop in the NORMAL size section and buy a size 12 pair of pants.

Its more along the lines of parents today being irresponsible. They are passing their irresponsibility down to their children.
Generation X'ers are now the parents.
Why are Americans so fat?
Well, as AKA posted in another thread, Krispy Kreme is going to introduce a low carb donut.
Let's look at that for a minute.
They want to market a fat filled, calorie laden donut as low carb, so said lard bomb can still be a part of your weight loss diet!
I can't believe they want us to now believe a donut can be healthy.
Don't believe the hype kids.
;)

You're like my dad. He buys 9 pieces of candy, 5 boxes of cake, and has really big lunches but hes one of the skinniest people ive ever seen.
phoebe7165 06-05-2004, 09:58 PM In addition to what everybody has posted, if you go out to restaurants in the U.S, first you got the buffets, where alot of the general buffets serve the same thing--fried chicken, meatloaf mashed potatoes with gravy, macaroni with cheese, etc. . Then there's the seafood buffet, where most of the seafood is fried or swimming in butter.
Now, the restaurants that don't have buffets, their portions ordered off the menus are huge!! Then after you only eat half your dinner, your server comes back and asks if you want dessert!! I mean I know it's what they're supposed to do, but if they want people to order dessert, don't feed us so much dinner!!
I used to have problems with my insides to where alot of times I would get incredible stomach cramps. I bought a calorie book and started keeping track of how many calories I was eating a day. I was astonished of how high it was. I used to eat a fast food chicken dinner--3 piece with mashed potatoes & gravy and 2 biscuits. I figured it out to be 2000 calories!! For just one meal! Quit all that.
During my time of the problems with my insides, I went to Europe for 2 weeks. During those 2 weeks, I did not have one episode of stomach cramps. When our tour group went to a restaurant,we ordered off the menu, and the portions were half of what they would serve in the U.S. and that was fine with me.

Yeah, it's amazing nowadays how many calories are in a meal. I remember taking calories in math class and caluclating how many calories are eaten in breakfast, lunch and supper. depending on what you eat, and I was shocked and thought yikes! I forget the exact amount, but the number was so high up there in calories. In the long run, it just wouldn't be healthy.
Polniaczek033 06-06-2004, 11:55 AM We're lazy. And fastfood. That's basically it. I hate being fat. :(

So did I. And when you get tired enough of it, and you hate it enough, you get off your butt and do something about it.
Best decision I ever made. Losing weight has changed my life. I like to look at clothes now, I dont hide under 2X clothing, I feel good, I exercise, I have a boyfriend.
You have to decide enough is enough and then do something about it.
Inactivity has a lot to do with weight gain, as I have recently fouud out.
Since I've been off work for the last four weeks, unable to work or work out because of my injured hand, with nothing to do but sit around and eat 3 meals a day, and drink more than I should be drinking, I have put on a few extra pounds.
But since I'm returning to work tomorrow, (which keeps me on my feet all day)and I will be able to start working out and riding my bike again, I'll drop the extra pounds in a few weeks.
