Hmmm... Well it's hard to pick ... I know that I can relate more to Shirley, I know that Laverne was always my fave when I was young; I was starting to lean towards Shirley again since I love animals, I can be pretty conservative at times... I don't really like to pick though, they were/are both beautiful and funny. :)

Yes, I would say you're right... The only thing I don't get about the board, was why my thread was closed  I just wanted to say I was new to the board. lol.

I can agree with you, it's just hard to pick just one of them since they're both way different personalities; Laverne just had the really "out there" and out going one. lol.

Well this is how I see the two of them, Shirley was the laid back and she always wanted to stick to her plans and of course her morals and ethics ~ she always wanted Laverne to stick with them as well because she was of course the best friend and was looking out for her, that's what I really like about Shirley; she's always looking out for Laverne, other people, and animals. And with Laverne, she is the one that always wants to break the rules and take the risks; she wanted to live life more on the wild side.
I think everyone gets that, obviously.

Yeah well... I don't think that everyone on TV has to be pretty... who wants to look at Barbie dolls all day long?

Tweety, you bring up an interesting point. I recently purchased the fiirst season of L&S on DVD, and was amazed by how the cast looked in 1976. We are all so used to seeing perfect faces, enhanced and toned bodies, and gleaming white teeth, that it was a shock for me to see a bunch of very average looking people severely in need of cosmetic dentistry. Usually, you only see such mediocre people on reality shows and BBC these days.

I don't mean to bust on the cast, but it just shows how much our expectations and view points have changed since the mid 70s. If they were casting these roles today, would any of these people have been hired (providing that they magically became the right age again <G>)? They weren't the most attractive cast, (that all changed of course, as the seasons progressed and they were able to have some "work" done), but they had a terrific chemistry and their talent gave the rest of use hours of laughter. Interesting trade off, isn't it?

there are other reasons I'm not a Penny Marshall fan, but no need to get into that here...besides, the question of the poll is "who do you like better"...which I answered...

You make an excellent point... and if I wanted to see nothing but "beautiful" people on TV, I'd be watching 24/7, because that's all any shows have anymore....but there are only a couple of shows (less than 5) that I watch even fairly regularly nowadays...

And if you asked me whether I'd rather watch a L&S marathon (remember, I'm not a fan of the show at all) or Brittney Spears' new upcoming "reality" show, I'd take the L&S marathon any day...even though I think B. Spears is a very beautiful (albeit untalented) woman, and I wouldn't get tired of looking at her any time soon. I wouldn't walk across the street to see a B Spears show...

And in terms of body types, I'm sure that Marilyn Monroe would be considered to be way too "fat" to be a star today...no present-day Hollywood "star" is "put togehter" quite like she was... Monroe couldn't make it as a "Price Is Right" girl in today's Hollywood..

Like I may have said before, I never watched this show when it was on (and not really since, either)... and I like Shirley better than Laverne... (I've always liked Cindy WIlliams better than Penny Marshall, I think she was much cuter).

lavernefan23 does have a very nice picture of Laverne for an avitar... that pic is not in this web site's photo gallery for L&S, I don't think...

I just went thru the photo gallery for L&S... Laverne looks very nice in a few of the photos, but I still gotta go with Shoil... and I think Cindy looks better today as well, although I don't know their real life ages...

Well I definately never watched the show when it was on, I wasn't even born then. Heh. I was born in '85 and started watching it when I was about 3 yrs old, I always wanted to be Laverne :) I had this one preschool teacher, she looked like Penny/Laverne and I would always run to her when she came in to the school. lol.
I guess it's just Penny/Laverne's personality that I just love, I think she's too funny :p And Cindy is awesome too, i'm not saying that she's not pretty or anything; I just think Laverne's looks were a lot more outgoing and fun :)
Right now, I believe Penny is 62 and Cindy is 57; here's some recent pics of them both. The first photo is of Penny recently and the bottom photo is of Cindy recently, well like a year ago. And the two in the mid of are a young Penny/Cindy and a young Penny, I think Penny looks beautiful in all the pics :)

Like I may have said before, I never watched this show when it was on (and not really since, either)... and I like Shirley better than Laverne... (I've always liked Cindy WIlliams better than Penny Marshall, I think she was much cuter).

Ya know what I wanna know, Bree? I wanna know WHY everyone is discussing their looks, even though I'm actually just adding more fuel to the fire. It's just that, I can't stand how women always have to look so perfect; it's really wrecked a lot of people's lives with hearing "You're ugly." Just think if Penny actually read these posts :( I'm sure that almost everyone that is putting down Penny has been told that they're ugly and made fun of, now how did it feel?

Yeah well... I don't think that everyone on TV has to be pretty... who wants to look at Barbie dolls all day long?

I think that all the cast members would have been able to be in this show now-a-days but they would of course do "extra" touch ups; probably put them on really strict diets and etc. But when I do actually think about it, I'm sure they would have had a tall, blonde, busty woman for Laverne's part and a shorter woman but with the same kind of body type as the actor playing Laverne. It's all about pleasing people now wiht eye candy, it really sucks. And men never have to be perfect, which I wish they would start getting harder on them and let them know how all of the pressure feels to be "perfect."

certainly you may ask... :)

While I certainly would not assume I'm qualified to say, for example, which L&S episodes were "the best" or "the worst", since I didn't watch it, that doesn't mean I'm not qualified to say whether I like Laverne or Shirley better... and that was the subject of this thread.

I didn't watch "The Partridge Family" when it was on, and in fact, i've probably never seen a complete episode....but that doesn't mean I couldn't immediately tell you who my favorite cast member of that show was...

If there are any "best episode", "worst episode" or "favorite episode" threads in the Laverne and Shriley forum, rest assured, I shant be posting my opinions there...because I wouldn't have any opinions on those topics...

but as far as who do i like better, laverne or shirley, i definitely liked shirley... I also loved Cindy Williams in "American Grafitti"... she was adorable!

And, women don't have to look perfect... I wouldn't say ANY of the L&S cast were 'perfect' looking people... we like them for other reasons... but come on, this show wasn't THAT deep.

Well I never said that you couldn't come and talk on the board, I was just wondering why you were since you never watched the show. I know that I don't bother going on the boards of shows I never watched. But I guess the reason on why you liked Shirley the best, was because you like Cindy Williams; I do too but since I watched the show ~ I always wanted to be like Laverne.
Of course the cast members weren't perfect, that's what I liked :) The women didn't have implants, no skimpy outfits; which I guess there were *some* but it wasn't in every seen. That's what I love about old TV shows, no one focuses on all that sex stuff.

certainly you may ask... :)

I think that the show was great because of both of them---one without the other sucks. But, that said, whenever I write fanfic I focus mostly on Laverne. But, I think that is because they didn't develop Shirley's character on the show as much as they should have. I would have loved more Shirley-centered episodes like "Buddy, Can You Spare a Father?".

That said, I am partial to Laverne. ;) Could be because I am from the New Jersey/New York area.
