I was switching channels and I decided to watch American Idol tonight. Then the dude was sending people to groups like group A,B, and C. How does that thing work?

How does that thing work? i think this is only a one time thing... they usually just go person to person, and 3 people are in the bottom 3 (lowest amount of votes), and the other people are safe. One person from the bottom 3 is eliminated (the one wit the lowest)

but... tonights grouping thing.. one group had the highest amount, another group had the 2nd highest, and the last group had the lowest.
