View Full Version : Anyone believe NBC?
LuV2DreeM 04-05-2004, 02:24 PM First, "Hollywood" likes money.
Why does a series remain on the air?
It makes more money than whatever would replace it.
So, do you really believe that American Dreams will get renewed because the Prez likes it?
We have to sweat out the next 10 - 15 Sunday nights as NBC tries whatever it can to improve ratings in that time slot.
If something comes along, they try it again. If it "works", we are all in deep doodoo (I'm assuming those reading this like American Dreams).
But to believe the show will be renewed because one family happens to like it?
Not for a minute.
Peace.
cjcouple 04-05-2004, 02:40 PM Actually they have already renewed for Season 3 a full 23 Episodes!!
They annonced it a few months back!!
LuV2DreeM 04-06-2004, 01:26 PM They "renewed" for season 3?
A full "23" episodes?
Those were words........which often can change in Hollywood. Last year they didn't announce "renew" until July or so.
And then cut 4 episodes off in Nov.
And didn't show ANY episodes in Dec......the Holiday Month you would think a "family" show would show itself.
So you have to ask yourself "why make the renewal notice WAY too early?"
Was it a marketing ploy to try to attract and/or keep viewers?
What other reason can anyone think of to announce something you didn't say last year until July, over 6 months before you actually need to?
My answer?
So you can try to keep whatever viewers you have now, but also try anything and everything else you can in the next few months to see what you REALLY are going to do.
Why?
You are driven by NUMBERS. Like VIEWERSHIP and MONEY.
That's Hollywood. Love it or leave it, them's the facts in TinselTown.
Time will tell.
Just watch what NBC tries every Sunday in our time slot and try to find out how successful each and every attempt is.
THAT will let you in on the "hint" of whether American Dreams TRULY will be renewed.
Peace.
cjcouple 04-06-2004, 01:43 PM Actually I think you need to do a little research on the entertainment world. Most of the returning shows are renewed early in the year.
The shows you need to worry about are the ones which are not announced early as a returning series.
NBC is not going to announce a returning show and then take it back. The show has already proven its worth. Otherwise it would not have gotten renewed from season 1. Besides how many shows have NBC ever announced as returning and then canceled in the past?? Don't know....do some research (hehe)!!
The DVD is coming out in the fall as well, so if the show was not producing money. They would not bother to release a DVD would they?? Nope.
zabadu 04-06-2004, 03:46 PM NBC is not going to announce a returning show and then take it back.
It's happened before.
Besides how many shows have NBC ever announced as returning and then canceled in the past?? Don't know....do some research (hehe)!!
Several.
The DVD is coming out in the fall as well, so if the show was not producing money. They would not bother to release a DVD would they?? Nope.
Yes they would. They would do it to recoup the money lost from the series not getting the ad revenue it should.
However, I did read that AD was picked up for a third season. Now, if they'd just stop pre-empting it, it could pick up a few more viewers.
zabadu 04-06-2004, 03:48 PM RECENT NEWS: Some Recent '04-'05 Renewals: Crossing Jordan, The Apprentice, American Dreams & Las Vegas (NBC), NYPD Blue (ABC), 4 first-year series & Survivor (CBS), Charmed & Gilmore Girls (The WB), and All of Us & Eve (UPN); Most recent cancellations: FOX's Wonderfalls, CBS's Century City, The WB's Angel (ending run), and NBC's Frasier (ending) & Lyons Den; Probable cancellation bait: FOX's Boston Public, CBS's The Handler, NBC's Good Morning Miami, Miss Match & Ed, and UPN's The Parkers & The Mullets; other recent renewals: Deadwood (season #2), Wild Card & 1-800-MISSING (season #2), Carnivale (season #2), Dead Like Me & Reno 911 (both: season #2, in summer), Nip/Tuck (season #2); NBC to spin-off "Joey" from Friends in '04-'05.
NOTE: Unaired episodes of cancelled Karen Sisco & L.A. Dragnet are (or will be) showing up on USA Network.
benjamoon 04-06-2004, 04:18 PM Don't be dumb now.... it may be true that they would cut the order down a little bit if it struggles but it will DEFINITELY be back in the fall. I don't ever remember any network promising a renewal for a returning show and then go back on it.
zabadu 04-06-2004, 04:35 PM I'll try not to be "dumb" now, but have you worked at a studio? I have. That one called Paramount.
Shows have been renewed and cancelled. By doing a quick search of TVParty.com, I managed to come up with one example in this short time frame. If you wish, I'm sure I could come up with more.
"That's My Mama starring Clifton Davis (Amen), Theresa Merritt, Ted Lange (Love Boat) and Theodore Wilson (Sanford Arms). This slapstick sitcom managed to get renewed, but only ran until Christmas Eve, 1975."
Just because you "don't remember any network promising a renewal...and then go back on it" doesn't mean it hasn't happened.
cjcouple 04-06-2004, 04:41 PM Cancelling a show mid season is not the same as cancelling before the season even starts.
Are you just looking to fight with people. You are certainly doing a bangup job at it.
At first I thought I was being unreasonable but now I see you are just bitter toward the world
zabadu 04-06-2004, 05:47 PM Thanks for the psychoanalysis. You are wrong.
I was trying to provide you with information. Then you changed your story. Yes, a show can be renewed and cancelled either after production starts or before.
What is it you want from me? To agree with everything you say, even if you don't know what you're talking about?
Well then, I misunderstood what a "discussion" board was all about.
You go ahead and continue to spew misinformation. Have fun.
nicole_adluver4 04-06-2004, 06:32 PM ok, quick question... i really dont think they'd leave us with a cliffhanger episode like that and then cancel it would they? i mean i may be naive about this but...
on the other hand, do you want to make us all feel bad and convince us that american dreams isnt coming back? it seems as if you dont want it to be renewed because you seem to express this opinion with much enthusiasm
please...i dont want to start antyhing but it seems as if something has already been started and the negativity should be stopped cause the board was so nice up until now
please don't tell us things like this unless its a fact because all it does is cause problems and pessimistic attitudes and we really dont need that here!
drbrun0 04-06-2004, 06:34 PM For the record, yes, I do believe NBC when they say American Dreams will be back next year. Heck, they're even scheduled to begin shooting season three on July 6.
Now, for the main purpose of this post. I haven't been posting here very long, but what I believe, even more than I believe NBC, is that this thread was started simply to stir up trouble and get people worked up.
zabadu 04-06-2004, 06:48 PM I posted that it was being renewed. I was responding to someone who said "shows that have been renewed don't get cancelled". They do. Even with cliffhanger endings (although I didnt' find this seasons end show to be a "cliffhanger").
I like this show. I watch this show. I want it to succeed. I just think it could be better than it is. I'm not the only one who expressed the opinion that getting renewed does not mean the show won't get cancelled down the line. It's all about money, kids, not whether people like it. Ed was a great show, people loved it, but it made no money for NBC, so they cancelled it.
I just find it hard when someone comes in and tells someone "do some research (hehe)!!" when they don't really know the correct answer, and it isn't very friendly.
This board seems full of people who like to dish it out, but cry foul when their mistakes are pointed out. If you aren't prepared to respond to what YOU post, then don't post if you can't take the response..
I was having a polite debate with jjsbabe today when several people jumped in with their opinions, and then got mad when I responded to their posts. Don't jump in then! Did you even see that I offered her magazines for research? Did you see that she and I ended on a good note?
It's a TV show, not your life.
Strawberry 04-06-2004, 11:45 PM i really dont think they'd leave us with a cliffhanger episode like that and then cancel it would they?
yeah that's been done before ...they did it with Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and they did it really bad with the show Popular .....the girl was in the car about to hit another girl and then the screen went black and then the series never came back
hopefully they won't do that with American Dreams 'cause I need to know what happens with JJ and Beth and the baby!
LuV2DreeM 04-13-2004, 12:43 PM And we all thought "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" was a good show with values.
That makes my point exactly.
It matters how much money the advertisers are willing to pay and if the network has any other show that pulls more money in.
I don't like it just like you don't. But you can't argue with the way they do business. It's their choice.
Peace.
LuV2DreeM 04-21-2004, 12:13 PM With this latest shake-up at ABC and their executives, I don't feel great having the NBC president the reason for our renewal.
What if NBC has a shake-up.......are we in trouble?
So far NBC has only ran Dateline in our place. I don't really know how to read this, whether that show is a valid threat to our spot.
Any thoughts on these items?
Peace.
Just Popped In 05-10-2004, 04:12 PM Shouldn't NBC at least be showing reruns of the first 2 seasons in the meantime?
Storywriter 05-19-2004, 01:15 AM But they don't......They didn't last summer so they probably won't this summer Mel :)
nicole_adluver4 05-22-2004, 03:24 PM they aired a few season 1 episodes last summer
