Sorry but I don't think I've ever heard any mention of anyone from Paul's side of the family come to visit the family after Paul's death...why? :(

That is one part of the show I don't understand.

I don't know either, but I don't remember them being mentioned in the first season, like Cate's family was, which gives me the impression they weren't close with him, or his family.

Hondarider, if that were the case, Paul's relatives must be pretty heartless people then.

They should at least try to bring in someone to represent Paul's side of the family like maybe have John's dear friend Henry Winkler to play Paul's older brother or something!

I'm not saying it's not disrespectful, but we still don't know anything about his family. We don't know how far that character's immediate family extends, and a distant relative would most likely come to pay their respects and leave, with an occassional visit, but not an extended stay.

Personally I would love to see Henry Winkler make a guest appearence, as a brother or a cousin. Henry Winkler is amongst my all-time favorite actors, and would be a great guest appearence. He's busy, with an upcoming sitcom, however, and may not be able to make an appearence, if he wanted to.

I don't understand that Cate's family is staying with the Hennessey's instead of Paul's family.

I think they just want to focus on Cate and how she's coping, but I think they should include a niece for Paul's side of the family...the equivelent of Cate's nephew CJ.

I think they should have Julie Hagerty as his sister,Henry Winkler shoud be his older brother, and Penny Marshall as his oldest sister. In Cate's family they should introduce a brother(Ed O'Neill),and and bring back Cybill Shepard as Maggie...

katefandream04 I love your casting to play John's siblings! They should really consider this! Just having Henry Winkler to play Paul's older brother would be really awesome and having Paul's visiting neice that is like a female version of C.P. sounds pretty good too! They should really consider this for a holiday ep. like ThanksGiving Day, or something. I also love your avatar pic. The pic is from a scene of Chance of a Lifetime! that's a really great movie & both John & Kate were great in that! I also want to say that recently sent you a private message to you!

On September 11, 2003 The Day John Collapased on the set, and later sadly died. Herny was there working with a speech coach (If I remember correctly) with script for the taping of that weeks show, I know he was guest starring, but not sure if he was playing Paul's brother or what. I hope they do bring him on the show as Paul's brother or something maybe as a recurring guest...I think that the cast is good now and adding any more full time charcters would be harmful to ratings, etc. also I think it would be nice for Amy and Jason Ritter to appear in the as Family Friends or cousins or something...Just a thought in Honor of John

I believe he was set to play a co-worker, the new editor I think I read. He is currently busy frequently guest starring on 'Arrested Development' and has a new sitcom coming out called 'Beverly Hills SUV' so he may not be available. I think he's not exactly interested in guest starring either, although I haven't heard any direct quotes about it.

I think Henry Winkler was supposed to play his new boss or something...

The same thing happened to the Hogans when mother Valerie Hogan passed away on Valerie. What's ironic is that when she was killed off, the show was then renamed Valerie's Family, and yet all I kept thinking was, where is Valerie's family? Where are her parents, who would be her kids' grandparents? Or her sisters, cousins, etc? Very odd.

It seems that whenever a principal character is killed off, the show feels that, while not totally ignoring the presence of the dearly departed character, it needs to temporarily try to fill the vacancy left by the character with something else that the audience will hopefully accept. And yet that can't be accomplished if ties to that character are brought up even only occasionally. It keeps the show stuck and serves only to remind the audience of what the show is trying to replace.

Mind you, I don't agree with this logic, but it happens all of the time. Remember when Edith Bunker died on Archie Bunker's Place? Before she was killed off, tons of her relatives/friends came by the house, especially when it was All in the Family, but the moment she was killed off, none of them were heard from again except those tied to the other cast, such as Archie (when Gloria visited) or Stephanie. I mean, shouldn't have Maude made a visit? Or Irene? Or the Jeffersons? Very interesting...

They should have them appear this season...like for example Cate gets a letter, and it says that Paul's parents are on their way from China, where they were missionaries, and they didn't hear the news till six months later, but couldn't come due to delays.

Katefandream04 that sounds really Good!

Here are some casting thoughts to play Paul's Mom or Dad:

Paul's Mom: Betty White, Chloris Leachman, Mary Tyler Moore, or Carol Burnett, Rue Mcclanahan
Paul's Dad: Gavin McCloud, Dick Van Dyke, Tim Conway

Cloris Leachman would be good too...I've seen her in Malcolm in the Middle.

How about Jason Ritter as one of Paul's relatives? Have him as the son of Paul's father's brother or sister, thus explaining the resemblance to "Papa H."

And on Cate's side of the family, Jim's brother Walter could have a grandson who looks like, as one woman put it, a "better-looking Josh Hartnett."

Uh, you do know the show is cancelled right? I guess it doesn't hurt to speculate, but you sound as if the suggestion is something the show should seriously consider when it in fact has been cancelled for well over a year.

I do know that the show's been off the air; they were post-cancellation thoughts.

I figured as much, but it sounded like you thought it was still on the air in production. Just wanted to clarify.

Take care,

I meant to write "...the grandson of Paul's..." Sorry about the goof.

It did bother me that none of Paul's relatives were ever on the show. I even thought right after John's death that maybe on the show maybe Paul's parents would be introduced.
