View Full Version : Medical Phobia
Rebel Queen 1980 04-02-2004, 12:58 AM I know I may sound like an idiot right now,but I still fear
doctors,I mean when I ever have to talk to one or if they
get close to me to do their testing I starting shaking real
bad and sometimes I get so nervous I can hardly talk.
Is this some kind of medical phobia that I have:confused:
Dutabi84 04-02-2004, 01:03 AM Probably. I mean, if there is such a thing as "the fear of aluminum foil," I'm sure there's a fear of doctors.

I feel the same way, around Drs and I've sure been to enough of them, that I shouldn't be upset, by them.
ponytail 04-02-2004, 07:40 AM I get real nervous around doctors. It's a cold atmosphere. The white coats, the background music. I'm getting nervous just thinking about it. I'm always afraid they're going tell me bad news. I hate sitting in the exam room and then I hear the doctor outside looking at my charts. I want to just get the heck out.
robyrob 04-02-2004, 08:19 AM i always thought that the best kind of doctor would be someone really laid-back, like Thommy Chong - of course he'd probably be a Pharmacist instead...
Titania 04-02-2004, 02:25 PM I'm terrified of hospitals, just the smell makes me nauseous, and I assosiate doctors w/ hospitals....soooo yeah, you arent alone with the medical phobia. I'm 18 and still try to run away from shots and blood tests...they've chased me into the hall more than once.
FamilyTiesGOP 04-02-2004, 03:18 PM I'm afraid of going too. It seems like they are always finding things wrong or things to do OTHER than the reason you went to go see them. They review your charts back to when you were given life and comment on old crap. They drive me nuts! I have a doctor now though he is really good. You go in, tell him what is bothering you and he gives you the proper medicine or fixes it. Simple as that.
Cashodeen 04-02-2004, 03:20 PM It's called iatrophobia, and I have it terribly.
Chocoholic 04-02-2004, 03:46 PM I'm not afraid of doctors or hospitals. The dentist, on the other hand...
Brent88 04-02-2004, 04:40 PM I hate the Dentist/Orthodontists a LOT worse. Doctors aren't ideal either, but I don't really have a problem. I think it's because I have gone to the Dentist and Orthodontists a lot more frequently in the last few years and because I have a lot of discomfort when I go. Outside of shots(and that's been 4 years), I haven't had any bad things happen at the doctor's. But I'm terrified of the Dentist. :(

Yeah, the dentist and orthodontist gives me the willies. Although not as much as the doctors, which is weird, because I know most people hate the dentist more.

I hate when they stand outside the door! And I hate that they take forever. And I fear bad news. AND I FEAR NEEDLES.

My dentist is nice, but I still don't like going. I hated my orthodontist and hated going there. Luckily that is a part of my past now.:)

O M G, you have got to be joking. Surely there is no doctor out there that is that insane?! Geez louise, I am in utter shock. Yeah, tell the assface about iatrophobia. The terd hound should have learned that one in med school.
MandieR1980 04-03-2004, 12:10 AM I used to be nervous alot when going to the Drs but after having surgery that all changes. I used to be afraid of needles but I got jabbed daily while in the hospital so now it doesn't even make me flinch. The only thing that does bother me still is getting IVs in because they never get it in the first time it takes 3 or 4 times and it hurts like a MFer!

Needles OMFG. I cried when they drew blood from me. It killed like you would not believe. They scare me... damn.

It all depends on what the doctor will be doing, if it involves needles oh yeah, I'm scared, big time! I once had a filling put in without novacine because I was too scared of being stuck with a needle in my mouth.
Wow, now that's fear. I won't even go that far even though I hate needles big time. I've fainted once during a blood test. And the other couple of times I've had blood test, I about fainted!
Hollow 04-03-2004, 03:32 AM last summer when i went in for a checkup they stuck a needle in my arm and sucked out blood from it. and a few months ago i went again and instead of taking the blood sample like that they got a little sharp thing and cut my finger. doctors are evil.

I get really bad symptoms, of dizziness, lightheadness, tingling in my hands and face
you just described me. whenever i sit around and do nothing and suddenly stand up fast i get really dizzy. i've fainted, lost my balance and started twitching because of it. it's fun though.

Yeah, I am very, very afraid of needles. I sometimes pass out. I get really bad symptoms, of dizziness, lightheadness, tingling in my hands and face, breathing difficulty--hyperventualating, and feeling over heated. I've never liked shots, and getting blood drawn is even worse.
I hear ya. Before I ever had a fear of doctors in general, I had problems with needles. The biggest horror story for me was when a psycho hygentist gave me a shot in totally the wrong place and my eye was paralyzed, COMPLETELY. Now, I had had novacaine shots before that would hit a nerve or kind of numb the wrong thing, but this was very different. Couldn't move my eye ball, couldn't blink... nothing. It was just stuck in one place. I about died. Took 30 minutes to wear off.

Oh god! That sounds bad. I'm getting chills just thinking about that. Once when I was a child I went to a doctor to get a blood test because I had a really bad cold that I couldn't get rid of easily. Well, the doctor takes out the needle and I'm like yelling and screaming that I don't want a needle and such and I'm squirming like crazy and they couldn't get the needle in because I was moving around too much. Even with some people, assistants I guess, holding my arm down so the doctor could try to give me the needle didn't work. The doctor actually quit and told my parents that they couldn't give me the needle. My dad couldn't believe it. You know, like a little kid being so strong that doctors can't hold them down for a needle. He was like "What do you mean you couldn't get the needle in? She's just a little kid."
I ended up having to go to a different doctor for a throat swab.

Ye-eah, way to avoid that shot. That's so funny you were able to put up such a fuss the doc had to give up!
FamilyTiesGOP 04-04-2004, 01:19 PM Well I don't really mind shots or drawing blood, just the thought of going to the office scares me.
