Has anyone ever gotten a Juror Summons?

I got one yesterday. It would be very very difficult for me to serve jury duty for so many reasons. I'm a single parent and I'm lucky to get support every once in a while. I don't have vacation or personal days at my job and missing work would be a hardship for me.

They told me to send a letter requesting to be excused for the reasons I've stated above.,

Does that happen often, being excused?

I hated being called for JD; I know it's my duty but not one of my favorites. Here, in Texas you can be excused if you are the caretakerof a child or elderly person..I dunno how the law changes in every state

I'm sure you can be excused for the reasons you stated. My brother in law was excused because he was going to be out of town when they wanted him to serve. I was called for jury duty a few years ago. It only lasted a couple days.

They're all excused and you're supposed to get paid for any work time missed. How old do you have to be to do it? I think it would be kinda cool.

My work would not have a problem with it, my boss is very cool. It's just that I would not get paid and I cannot afford to miss even an hours worth of work.

I got the papers last year and sent them in. I haven't had to serve yet though. I think it would be fun.

I agree with you! To me if you don't want to serve you shouldn't have to, isn't this a violation of my freedom when I say I don't want to be apart of this?? In California, there is no excuse, they will delay and delay until you find someone to take care of your child or whatever problems you have but you will serve, no if's ands or buts about it. Even if your employers does not pay for jury service, you lose that money for the day or however long it takes.

I don't like it. I'm due to get another summons, I get one every year. There are other things I could be doing. JMO!

This is ironic. The mail just came here and my dad got a letter saying he had been summoned to serve on a jury in May!

I avoided jury duty for a while with varying excuses- mostly the real reason being I needed to work.

When I did serve I got a trial with a bunch of idiots who couldn't see the plain truth in light of an attorney spewing out all these conspiracy theories.

I swear to God, for a simple case we were there for four days until one guy stood up and called everyone thinking "innocent" an idiot and succinctly summed up the facts and the possibilities and explained "reasonable doubt" for what it actually meant and not some nonsensical version they invented in their heads.

The way that guy turned around no less than 6 people was nothing short of amazing. I'm telling you it should have been filmed.

So that was the only cool thing about it.

The trial by jury is one of our most valuable rights, despite the obvious high profile stories that focus on some of its shortcomings. Everyone has excuses why they shouldn't have to serve, and if there were not consequences to not serving no one would show up. Who would be left to serve on juries then - the rich or retired people. Most of the time jurors are not needed so it turns out to be a waste of time, but that's life.

I wouldn't mind, but it seems that I meet people who have never been called or sent a summons, but my name seems to be ever revolving in the system. Give others an opportunity to serve, and then I wouldn't mind, but don't call me every year to do this, every five years seems fair. Why is it that I can't win the lottery but my number always comes up for jury duty??

How do they get your name? From being registered to vote?

Just got a summons for Jury Duty. This makes my third summons in 13 years. I got chosen to serve the first time. I have a lot of friends and family who have never been summoned. With those odds, why can't I win the lottery?

Yeah, yeah, it's my civic duty, but it's a royal pain in the neck.

I got a dreaded jury duty summons in the mail last week. I freaked out, acted like a mad woman, got upset, growled at a few people when I looked at it again it was for my address but just for a previous resident. I've lived here for 5yrs now the court hasn't updated their records. ;D

It only happened to me once and hope that it never happens again.
It wasn't all bad; we got treated good and everything but at the same
time I was unemployed and needed to find a job and couldn't do so
properly because I had to be a juror. Thank God it didn't last too long.

I just got my first summons in the mail today to report for jury duty. I'm 23. I already sent the form in over the internet and I have to report on Jan. 31 and Feb 1 so see if I'll get selected. I have no excuse whatsoever to not do it, but I'm also a little excited to see what it's like to be on a real jury. I love Law and Order SVU, but I'm sure a real life trial won't have a hot guy like detective Stabler! I'm hoping if I do get selected it also won't be a really long trial. Any advice for me would be greatly appreciated!

When I got my first summons, I was super-excited too. I went to the courthouse at like 8 in the morning....they had us fill out some paperwork. They told us what the day was going to be like. Then, we went to the courtroom with the judge, the lawyers, and a couple other people (maybe the defendant, but I can't recall for certain). Then, we went through "voire dire." This is basically the judge and the lawyers asking us questions like, "Have you heard any information about this case before? Can you get paid-time off? Would serving on the jury cause you or your family any emotional or financial hardships? Are you prejudice in any way that may effect your ability to keep an open mind towards the case."

They just randomly picked people to go through this from the 50 or so of there to actually undertake voire dire. Both lawyers and the judge got to ask questions until they eliminated you. If they didn't eliminate you, you were selected for jury duty.

Since I was about the 30th person chosen for voire dire, I was there until like 4:00 I think. I didn't get picked for the jury, though, because I was in school. I also would have been exempted because I couldn't get paid time off work.

Hope that helps!

I went for the first time last year. It wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be (I watch Law & Order too!) and I couldn't wait to get out of there.

BTW, this year the U.S. postal service is issuing a Jury Duty Stamp.

When I got summoned for jury duty the first time, I had a broken wrist and was on pain medication, I had to bring a form from my doctor excusing me. But they told me I'd be recalled at a later date and I was. It wasn't too bad.
I showed up every day along with about 75 other people and waited to see if
I'd be picked to be on the jury. I didn't get picked so I'd get to come on home. It was kind of boring, I brought a book to read so I'd have something to do. So its not so bad, Good Luck on your jury duty.

Janice

Jenny, if you're legally blind or close to it, you can be excused. I was summoned recently, but I'm having health issues. I called my doctor, and she sent me a letter stating that I can't sit for long periods of time (To Whom It May Concern). I sent the letter along with the questionairre that they send with the summons. A few weeks passed, and I got a card from the court stating that I was excused.

You can also postpone it for a year. Transportation or inconvenience will not excuse you. That was stated on my summons. My aunt gets excused because she suffers from anxiety. As long as your doctor will write a note, you're all set. Doctors know what health issues exclude people from serving on a jury. Good luck.

It may not work anymore, but I've heard that if you write down that you don't believe in the death penalty, you won't be called to serve (for states that have the death penalty).

Also, I remember a co-worker telling me that he doesn't respond to the jury duty form he gets. He says that he can always say he didn't get it in the mail. That sounds kind of risky to me, though. There was talk that those forms were going to now be sent by registered mail so the courts know that you got it when you sign for it.

I served in 1982 and was on two cases. Kind of interesting at times but sort of boring and I don't like sitting for hours at a time.

I got picked for jury duty about 10 yrs. ago approx. and it was an interesting experience. I also tried to get out of it but it didn't work. We got treated pretty good and it only lasted about a month or so; can't remember exactly.

I hope that I never get picked again because now I'm trying to get my life on track with everything and so I don't need any interruptions if possible.

I got called into serve a couple of years ago (August 06) when I was 21.

Not a very memorable experience. I had to be in the courthouse by 8:30am and stayed until 6:00pm, with 1 hour lunch break. I wasn't even called in for questioning and just literally sat for 9 hours waiting.

I did get my $40.00 a couple of weeks later which was the only good that came from that day. What were your jury experiences like?

I was called for that over 10 yrs. ago; too long ago so, can't remember exactly what year or even the month for that matter. I do remember it was for a murder case, and we were very well treated, etc...it only lasted for about a month or so; not too long (thank god). It was an interesting experience but, hope I don't get called back for that anytime soon. I was told that once you do it; there's no chance of doing it again but, you never know.

I hear you Bandito! After getting called four times over the last 20 yrs I feel that way too. And I served on a jury where the judge was a class A jerk. We actually ended up getting sequestered over a 3rd degree burglary case. What a waste of taxpayer $ bec we got delayed because of the judge. The other times I got called the judges seemed really cool - like the judge who almost heard the Amadou Diallo case and when a gp from the jury pool were called before judge Leslie Crocker-Smith. (She was a tough-as-nails judge who handed out 200+ yr sentences to drug lords and had a contract put out on her)

And its so wild this thread got started because I had a dream about Jury Duty last night. We were asked at work by the CEO's secretary to volunteer for it! Now is that a WIERD dream or what?

Always bring at least 5 hrs of reading material or you're going to be bored sh*tless.

I just received a summons for jury duty. :( I don't want to go. Has anyone here here been called for jury duty? What can I expect? I have heard all the stuff about just sitting around and waiting. Courts, judges, lawyers make me nervous. I have never even been inside a court room. I keep telling myself just do it and get it over with. The only thing that really bothers me is taking time off work.

I was called to serve in August 2006. I remember we all had to call the court the night before we were supposed to appear to hear the confirmation if we were supposed to attend the next morning.

My jury experience wasn't really a memorable one. I had to be at the courthouse by 8:30am and I stayed there until about 6 or 6:30pm.

I wasn't even called in for questioning, my time there was just literally sitting around in a big room waiting to hear your number to be called.

My day pretty much went like this:

8:00am arrive at the courthouse and wait on line to be searched by the metal detectors.

8:30am you arrive in the waiting room where the employees introduce themselves and tell you what to expect throughout the day, where the restrooms are, in case of medical emergency... and all of that info.

Then they gave you some forms to fill out while a video filmed by Diane Sawyer was playing where she explains about "the meaning of jury duty" and how important and honorable it is....

Then around 9:30am or so you all hand in your forms and the first set of questioning begins. At this point you begin just waiting around and listening for your number to be called.

Around 12:30pm is your lunch break. They give you exactly 1 hour for lunch and explained that if you are late, pending serious circumstances, you can face criminal charges.

Then when you get back in at 1:30pm the second set of questioning begins and you again wait around for your number to be called.

This goes on all the way until 5:30pm -6pm where the session ends for the day.

Then at this point all of the people who weren't called in or weren't dismissed yet wait around for the staff to call your name where they give you an official certificate to prove that you were at jury duty for the day.

This can take as long as it takes until everyone left is individually called up.

Since I was never called in I can't tell you exactly on how the questioning/evaluation procedure goes if your number is picked.

About maybe 2 weeks later my $40.00 check for my 1 day service arrived. The certificate I got mentioned that I cannot be called back to serve again until after August 2012, six years after my date.

Alot of people think serving jury duty is a privilege. I think it's a pain in the a$$, and I'm glad I haven't got called for it in a long time!!! I don't how it is where you live, but like James said, now some have it to where you have to call this number the night before, and it's automated, and they say, if you have a certain number on your summons, you have to report, all others don't have to.

It was just alot of sitting around. It's been so long I don't remember all that happened. I just remember being very bored. Also, losing out on money because they pay you very little, and having to miss work because of it!!!

Who knows, you might not even have to serve!!

A few years ago I received a summons for jury duty. I called them and told them I was legally blind. I then had to obtain a letter from my eye doctor stating my eye conditions. Once they received that letter I was dismissed and didn't have to show up for jury duty. I don't know if I'll ever be summoned again. Hopefully not. I wouldn't be of much help if I was summoned again.

Bring a good book or two - something you've always wanted to read. Jury duty is yukky - at least to me - but that's because I get called like clockwork every 4 years. When I have to do it again (ugh!) that will make it time #7. It will likely be a lot waiting. Good luck.

I went 25 years ago and loved it. You do wait around but the experience for me was wonderful. I learned a lot. Only thing I wasn't too crazy is getting there. I hated to drive so got a ride to the court. I have gone a number of times since then but wasn't chosen. At the time I made more money there than at my job. I was paid $50.00 a day. I had ? a 8 hour day at the court.

I figured to put this here since I heard an update on how jury duty works around NY from my sister who was called today.

The policy is different from when I served back in 2006. Now everyone has to be interviewed by a lawyer and they decide if you are to be dismissed or not.

For people whose number never came up, they have to keep coming back until a lawyer gets to them. My sister spoke to a few people who had been there for 3 days because their number never came up.

Back in 2006 I was dismissed just because my number never came up to go in for questioning; now they want to see everyone.

Usually, there's a box to check that lets you postpone it for a year. I did that a couple of times. Once, I didn't get called back. When I did serve, I didn't get paid a dime.

the judge and the shysters make.

I've been summoned A LOT since I've been a registered voter. So for 12 years it seems like every 6 months or so I get that Jury Duty card in the mail. Since I have small Children I have been exempt each time. I know in my area if you do not attend Jury Duty they can actually arrest you or ticket you. But my very first time going to Jury Duty was so darn boring, Just take a book or some crossword puzzles and get it over with.

Around here I think the most you can postpone it for is 6 months.

The first time you can do it by mail, internet, or over the phone.

The second time you have to go there in person to explain your reasoning.

Did you pursue them it?

I've never been called, but I'd actually like to be (yes I know what I'm saying). I'm the daughter of two lawyers and I literally grew up around court rooms, I find the whole process interesting. I'd still make sure I had a paperback in my purse, but still...

I do have one story to tell, however. My dad was once called for jury duty. He made it past the first round of questions and went into the courtroom for the second round. It was then that he found out it was a capital murder trial that could last for weeks/months. He looked at the defendant, looked at the judge, looked at the prosecutor, then looked at the defense attorney: it was a guy he went to law school with! He said right away that he recognized the lawyer. Now his old classmate said he had no objections, but the prosecutor dismissed him on the spot

Most of the time, you go in the first day and you don't have to return. I was called in last year. I called the courthouse the day I received my notice in the mail. You go in and odds are you'll be sitting there all day. Bring a book or your iPhone/touch. Most courthouses have wiFi.

Yesterday, I got a state letter saying that I'm required to go on jury duty!

I have never been offered jury duty and I'm a regular voter (I won't be voting this year, but that's another topic altogether)!

What should I do and how should I dress?

When I went, I dreaded it. But when I was there it all became interesting. I wasn't picked but that was okay. I had never been in a court room and I found it a little intimidating but it was all interesting.

Ugh! I've done jury duty 8-9 times so far. At this point I HATE HATE HATE it. I look at it this way: I've done more than my fair share & have served on two trials. Why don't they call people who have never done it.

I'm due to be called and praying it doesn't happen.

In November of 2013, I made plans for Thanksgiving. I was going to visit some relatives who lived in Georgia, and I was going to leave on Wednesday, and return on Monday. No sooner had I made my plans I got a summons for jury duty, and the date was Monday! I changed my plans, and let home on Tuesday and returned home on Sunday. Guess what? The did me a favor! On the way up it took me over four hours to get through Atlanta. Returning home on Sunday I just cruised through the city! NEVER AGAIN will I attempt to drive through Atlanta on a weekday. :angryfire

On Monday I showed up for jury duty, and the only case that day was resolved out of court, and we were dismissed. I took the $15.00 I was payed to procure some toys for my church's toy drive. :santa2:

Wow... There's no such thing as jury duty here in Sweden, so I have to find the whole thing peculiar. We do have a couple of laymen at trials here as well, but I believe that they're volunteers.

I believe it's your civic duty to serve. A couple of times I deferred it when the timing was bad but otherwise I go. I've served on several juries including being the foreman on a murder trial, 2 weeks of grand jury, and a federal criminal case where we had audio tapes of hidden bugs planted by the FBI and one of the defendants escaped and was recaptured during the trial.

You pretty much have to go, unless they excuse you for a valid reason. I only received notice once and was excused.

I was called once, and I was the first in the group to be questioned before the judge. But it turned out that I knew one of the 2 attorneys involved in the case personally. When the opposing attorney found that out, he arranged to have me excused immediately...!

I was summoned twice for jury duty (once in August 2006 and the other in Feb. 2014) but never made it to the trial.

I was dismissed the same day because they never got to my name back in 2006, but they've changed the rules and made it so that they have to see everyone who gets summoned. You have to keep reporting to jury duty until they get to see you.

The 2nd time I was excused when I didn't meed the criteria they were looking for in that particular case.

In 2013 I had just made reservations to spend Thanksgiving weekend with my cousins, who lived north of Atlanta. My plans were to leave the day before Thanksgiving, and leave on the Monday after Thanksgiving. The next I got a summons from Volusia County for Jury Duty. The date? The Monday after Thanksgiving! I had to bend over backwards to get the reservations changed, but I pushed up everything by a day, leaving on the Tuesday before (oops!) Thanksgiving and returning home on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Guess what? Volusia County DID ME A FAVOR! On the way up north I had to deal with Atlanta's rush-hour :angryfire TRAFFIC :angryfire. However since I returned home on Sunday I didn't have to contend with Atlanta's traffic. Otherwise, I'd would have had to deal with it on Monday. omg: So Thank you Volusia County, you did me a favor! :D Arriving at the courthouse in Deland, Fl. that Monday it was announced that there was only one case pending, and both parties had agreed to settle it out-of-court, so I picked up my check for $15.00, cashed it in and purchased some toys at "Uncle Wallys" to donate to three different charities. :santa2:

Last time I was excused when I told them I was disabled with arthritis and unable to drive. This was true as it was during one of my flares. Years ago I told them I was a Libertarian they immediately dismissed me. Same with years ago when I worked in the media. My issue wasn't that I didn't want to serve, just that they kept sending me to the worst courthouses that were 45 minutes to an hour away in bad areas (talking bad areas of Chicago) and at the time I would have had to take public transportation. The irony is I lived five minutes down the street from a criminal courthouse and another was 20 minutes away and only once did I even get one of these courthouses, it was always the high crime area one.

No, as there is no jury duty here in Sweden (there are laymen involved in lower courts here too, but it's not quite the same thing as the juries in the US). And I guess that I would have been excused anyway, because I have so many disabilities.

I was a (I think it was 2 week jury) in 1985 and where i live you were paid $50.00 a day. The case was interesting, I am glad I did it. In later years had a few more notices to come and was called not to come or dismissed when i got there. Now I get notices to drive an good hour and 15 minutes to another court and I told them I don't like to drive that far. Earlier places I could take the train.

People would look at me like they looked at poor Edith in that episode where she had to goto Jury Duty...

I wouldnt wanna put someones fate in my hands, regardless of what they did.... (Well maybe if someone commited murder AND WE COULD PROVE IT I would help get a guilty conviction)
