It is Al Green. So many were left off, like my favorites "Ain't That Peculiar," and "How Sweet it is To Be Loved By You," but I picked "Mercy, Mercy Me!" boechsner 03-30-2004, 03:24 AM Mine is not on your list: "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" Dean Winchester 03-30-2004, 03:27 AM mine isn't on your list, I Want You Tuesday Weld 03-30-2004, 11:38 AM I like so many of his songs, that I couldn't narrow it down to just a few......:D Dr. Jazz 03-30-2004, 01:38 PM What's Going On?, Sexual Healing There are so many. Some of my favorites that are not on the list: Come Get to This Turn on Some Music Sanctified Lady Got to Give it Up Crimson and Clover 03-30-2004, 04:10 PM Can I Get A Witness isiahthomas 03-30-2004, 04:20 PM Dr Jazz i'm surprised u said Sanctified Lady. That's a tight song. Have u heard his Dream Of A Lifetime album? That's the last album he did before he died. I think it came out in 83. Turn On Some Music song was sampled by rapper Erick Sermon for his Music song which became a big hit for Erick. G Unit sampled Marvin Gaye's Come Live With Me Angel song for their I Wanna Get To Know U song with r&b singer Joe which is gettin a lot of video play & radio play right now. There's a lot of Marvin Gaye songs i like to so i can't say just one. Got To Give It Up song is the jam. That song is long. jamier42 03-30-2004, 08:14 PM I like more than one of his songs. 1. What's Going On 2. Let's Stay Together 3. How Sweet It is To Be Loved By You 4. Mercy Mercy Me 5. Sexual Healing jamesanthony 03-31-2004, 11:10 AM Of the ones listed up top Aint Nothing Like the Real Thing is my favorite. The ones he did with Tammi Terrell were really outstanding. A good combination of good performers and really good songwriting. Michael McDonald redoes quite a few old Marvin Gaye tunes on his latest CD and it struck me how good those old motown numbers were that they could be reinterpreted by someone completely out of the motwon context and they still sound fresh and compelling. Tragically, although he was very talented, Marvin Gaye had a very tormented life. Are there any successful singers who aren't driven to create genuis by personal turmoil? jamesanthony 03-31-2004, 11:12 AM Actually relooking at the list again I meant to cast a vote for Aint No Mountain High Enough. JMO, but I don't think Michael McDonald does Marvin's or any of the Motown singer's songs justice. jamesanthony 03-31-2004, 03:32 PM I like Michael McDonald. Those motown songs have been recorded so many times yet they stand up to so many different interpretations it is amazing. I don't know much about Marvin Gaye's songwriting credits. Which tunes did he write that are classics? Many of his songs were given to him to record by motown. isiahthomas 03-31-2004, 04:42 PM I don't know if Marvin wrote any of his songs but i heard that he jumped over a desk in Berry Gordy's office trying to fight Berry cause Berry wouldn't let him out of his contract with Motown. Marvin wanted to write his own songs & i guess Berry wouldn't let him. That's why Marvin left Motown & signed to independent label Tamla records cause he had freedom to write his own songs. He brought his What's Going On album to Berry to have Berry release it & Berry told Marvin that that kind of music would never sell. I guess Marvin got the last laugh cause What's Going On album was the biggest album of his career. The Jackson 5 didn't stay with Motown that long either cause from what i hear, they wanted to write their own songs so that's why they signed with Epic records & the rest is history. Stevie Wonder also left Motown to sign with Tamla records. I don't understand why owners of these record labels won't let the artists write their own songs & put out the kinda music they wanna put out. When a artist has independent freedom, that's when the music usually turns out good instead of having somebody else write your songs. That's exactly why r&b & rap music sucks today cause these record labels be making the artists do songs that will sell but the music is trash. That's also another reason why so many people are downloading music instead of buying music cause music isn't good anymore like music from the 70's, 80's, early 90's.
