ay Sweeps Special Set for Burnett
Classic Cast Will Reunite

By James Hibberd

Carol Burnett, whose November 2001 reunion special on CBS drew nearly 30 million viewers, will reunite with castmates from her classic sketch comedy show for a CBS special tentatively slated to air during May sweeps.

The previous reunion special, "The Carol Burnett Show: Show Stoppers," was the fourth most-watched program of 2001 and was nominated for three Emmy Awards. Its performance sparked a spate of nostalgic network projects. The new program, titled "The Carol Burnett Show: Let's Bump Up the Lights," will feature memorable moments from the audience question-and-answer segments that used to begin Ms. Burnett's show, which ran on CBS from 1967 to 1979.

"This is taking the funniest bits of the Q&As and reliving them," said executive producer Marty Tudor. "It's hysterical stuff. It's Carol essentially ad-libbing, and it really portrays her genius."

Familiar Faces

Ms. Burnett, who is also an executive producer, will host the special along with former co-stars Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner.

Ms. Burnett said she had the idea for the program after hearing complaints from viewers about the Q&A segments being trimmed in the show's syndicated run.

"I thought it might be kind of fun to see if we could put together a different kind of clip show instead of blooper and greatest moments, which has been done," Ms. Burnett said. "It could get wild. You never knew what anybody was going to say."

The Q&As, Ms. Burnett said, were entirely unscripted. Looking back at the early ones, she said, "They were really kind of awkward."

"At first I was terrified that they wouldn't raise their hands," she said. "And then I was terrified when they did." #

This is terrific news!! :D :D :D

The bit where they have 4 or 5 Q&A moments on 1993's "The Carol Burnett Show: A Reunion" is literally one of the hightlights of the special.

The "floor soap" clip gets me every time!! :rotflmao:

Thanks, Carol! :D

^^^ I know, I had tears, too!

Woman: "What kind of soap do they use to clean the floor?"

Carol: "...well now I think that's a little personal! :p "

Carol (to man offstage): "...you wanna tell the lady what it is?"

Carol (to woman): "Do you have vinyl on your floor? Is that it? Where is it, in your bathroom, kitchen...?"

Woman: "All over."

Carol: " 'all over'? You have vinyl all over your house? "

Woman: "Just on the floor."

Carol: "Oh, just on th-- :rotflmao: I love you! (to audience): she said 'just on the floor'! "

Well ILCB, I really don't anticipate it bein' 90 minutes. :( I mean, it's only Q&A, and a lotta the clips will be very short (like on the CBS '93 Reunion Special). So it would most likely be a 42 minute one, too.

Course, we could be surprised, but I just think an hour or less is more realistic.

Accordin' to the article it's 42 minutes. It says 10:00 - 11:00, but then it says "ET/PT" which doesn't make sense, because that's not Eastern and Pacific times---because Eastern has news at 11:00, never a special (unless it's a MAJOR awards show, and even then those start hours earlier). And Pacific is 3 hours behind.

What it should say is "10:00-11:00 Eastern Time", and The Early Show "7:00-9:00 a.m. Eastern time".

That woulda made it clearer for all.

Thanks for the article! :)

Wow, that's weird...I wonder why they're showing it late on Wednesday night? Oh well, not that it matters, since I get done with school a week after the special airs. :D
