Since most people who are a fan of one of these sitcoms seem to be a fan of the other, so match up the most alike characters. (And do not, I repeat do NOT say "Anthony - Coco" ) Here's mine:
Charlene Frazier/Stillfield - Rose Nylund; they're both a little slow, naive, and they're country girls.
Suzanne Sugrabaker - Blanch Devereaux; They're both obsessed with their looks, men, and money.
Mary Jo Shively - Dorothy Zbornak; They're both divorced to jerks, they're both feminazis, and they don't date much.
Julia Sugarbaker - Sophia Petrillo; They're both the oldest, wisest, have great one-liners, and they're both widows.

I've gone through that to myself a million times before! It's amazing how much alike the characters are.

Okay, I got weirded out when I saw "Mary Jo-Dorothy" and "Julia-Sophia", lol.
To me, it's always been:
Dorothy - Julia: They're both the most intimidating, the "bossy/sophisticated" one, and quick with put-downs.
Mary Jo - Sophia: They're both the smallest ones, get inappropriate with their humor, and are the "funny" ones (most one-liners).
And actually I compare not only these 2 shows, but DW, GG, and "Facts of Life":
Julia/Dorothy/Jo
Suzanne/Blanche/Blair
Mary Jo/Sophia/Natalie
Charlene/Rose/Tootie

Agreed...
FOL/DW/GG
Jo/Mary Jo/Dorothy
Blair/Suzanne/Blanche
Tootie/Charlene/Rose
Natalie/Julia/Sophia
I know the Natalie one is a bit questionable, but it always seemed like she was the voice of reason/experience, such as Julia and Sophia.

I love the Golden Girls, but I'm not really a fan of Designing Women.
But I have watched a few times, and I agree with TALLguyinKY on the characters.

I agree that there are a lot of similarities between the two shows. I would love to have seen Julia Sugarmaker and Dorothy Zbornak in a battle of the words together!!! And can you imagine Blanche and Suzanne together in one room? They couldn't fit both of their egos in Grand Central Station!!!

lol, that would be one very interesting crossover fanfiction! And throw Sophia in the mix, and it gets even crazier (if that's even possible, hehe).

I've always seen a parallel between GOLDEN GIRLS/DESIGNING WOMEN/ LIVING SINGLE:
Dorothy/Julia/Khadijah (the main one)
Rose/Charlene/Synclaire (the naive one)
Blanche/Suzanne/Regine (the sexy one)
Sophia/Mary Jo/Maxine ("Max") (the smart one)
