3. Red Dwarf (only the first six series)
4. The High Life

7. One Foot In The Grave
8. The Book Group

2. Red Dwarf
3. Allo, Allo
4. Grace and Favour (Are You Being Served? Again)

Steve's Roadhouse 05-04-2004, 12:22 PM I haven't seen everything on that list, and a couple surprise me. Is "Open All Hours" the other Ronnie Barker show, where his son is that guy who played a detective as well as the father on that family show with Catherine Zeta Jones. If so, I liked that one. here is my list.
Fawlty Towers
Red Dwarf
Black Adder
Are You Being Served (early seasons, went from a very good show to a very bad one in my opinion)
One Foot in the Grave
Waiting for God
On the Buses (shallow stuff I know, but hey)
Absolutely Fabulous
Rising Damp
Butterflies
Things like Mr.Bean, Two Ronnies, Hale and Pace, Monty Python obviously aren't sitcoms, although Mr.Bean is a recurring character and some of his episodes (skits) are a half hour. If so, put Mr.Bean in.

i agree with you about 'are you being served' it became how stupid can we make Mr. Humpries look this week :)
Mr.bean,The Two Ronnies etc were sketch shows not regarded as sitcoms.
'The darling buds of may' was the Cathrine Zeta Jones one, popular in the UK, i wasn't into it myself.
Aardvark 05-25-2004, 01:23 PM 1. Blackadder
2. OFaH
3. Fawlty Towers
4. Dad's Army
5. Red Dwarf
I think Blackadder wins by far though. (Apart from the first series)
Chambers 05-25-2004, 07:24 PM Yes, Absolutely Fabulous DEFINATELY needs to be there!

Wha- I can do that?
...
I mean... Yes! Of course! I knew that!
I was of course, going to do that anyway... Aha... Yeah...
Who's the moderator?
Chambers 05-31-2004, 09:00 PM I would try sending a private message to "TJ" or "JethroSimpson" - the two names that appear at the top of this forum....next to the word "moderators"...but of course you knew that too ;)
cheers to your rebirth, Three Fingered Pete.
TheLurkerKing 08-10-2004, 10:22 AM Just when I think I've gotten my list down to ten, I think of another one to add; therefore, excluding "Monty Python," but where does that leave "The Goodies," here are, if not the best, then the funniest Britcoms, that I have seen.
Allo, Allo
Are You Being Served?
Blackadder
Doctor in the House
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
Father Ted
Fawlty Towers
Keeping Up Appearances
My Hero
On the Buses
Rising Damp
Up Pompeii
miker 08-12-2004, 02:19 AM I will post a few of mine.

Jeeves and Wooster. great acting and photog nothing better
The Vicar of Dibley Girl Power
Rising Damp quirky but hard to break away from

Black Adder more fry and laurie
Keeping Up Appearances one can get to much of Mrs Bucket
Dianne42 08-12-2004, 12:54 PM Hi I am new here. This looks like a fun site. My favorite Britcoms are
Keeping up appearances
One foot in the grave
Abfab
As time goes by
Vicar of Dibley
Faulty towers
My family.
I was suprised to see that keeping up appearances did not make the list of top ten.
Steve's Roadhouse 08-12-2004, 06:01 PM You know. The first couple times I watched Keeping Up Appearances, I thought it was hilarious. All the characters are great. I just find that every episode is so similar. The same jokes over and over. Still fun stuff though. Maybe I should watch again. It's been awhile.
miker 08-13-2004, 05:56 AM I am just amazed that Jeeves and Wooster didn't show up. I have never seen anything better.
Mickey 08-13-2004, 01:44 PM J&W isn't a sitcom. It's a comedy-drama. Likewise something like You Rang M'Lord. A sitcom is generally the half hour format. I agree, though, J&W was excellent. Bizarrely one of many wonderful shows that were never repeated in the UK. Nobody really seems to know why. It was so good to see it all again when the DVDs came out.
miker 08-13-2004, 03:45 PM Well....now that you mention it. Jevees and wooster is not a sitcom.
Thanks
mikew_tv2002 08-20-2004, 04:56 PM Every episode of “Are You Being Served?” that I have watched so far has made me laugh so hard.
(Mr. Humpheries): “Glass of water for Mr. Grainger!”
(Mr. Humpheries, deep voice, sounds like Captain Peacock's): “Menswear.”
And in case anyone is wondering about the exact spelling of Mrs. Slocombe's last name, it's spelled S-L-O-C-O-M-B-E even though some episodes that are closed captioned either spell it as “Slocum” or “Slokum”.
(Mr. Grace): “You've all done very well!”
(All): “Thank you, Mr. Grace!”

Mike, who is starting to sound/act like Mr. Rumbold
mikew_tv2002 08-20-2004, 04:57 PM I forgot to add...
Wasn't “Rumpole of the Bailey” (I think that was the title) a British sitcom?

Mike
Shanda Lear 08-30-2004, 06:13 PM I vote for
Keeping Up Appearances
Last Of The Summer Wine
AYBS? and AYBS? Again
The Goode Neighbors
Solo (with the Good Neighbors' Barbara in it)
Butterfly
AbFab
Chef (I just found this one. I like Lenny Henry!)
volvo 09-03-2004, 11:17 AM How could those shows not be on the list?!! Especially Nighty Night. I guess it's sort of new, but it's a total obsession for me.
Has anyone else seen it on Oxygen, friday nights at 11pm ET? The season finale is next Friday!!!
http://www.oxygen.com/nightynight/
I have a feeling it's going to be bigger than The Office, which is also brilliant and should also be on the list. How about this, what are your top RECENT Britcoms?!
ThirteenInchEscape 09-03-2004, 02:28 PM no Coupling?
D-Dey 09-09-2004, 01:14 PM WTF?!
I don't know about the rest of my version of that list, but I'd put The Young Ones right at the top. In fact, I'd put it at the top of the entire English-speaking sticoms list!
 :cuss: :soapbox: :thumbsdow :rolleyes2
Jason_Voorhees13... 10-23-2004, 07:32 PM Are You Being Served? The only number ons show of all time in England.
EdwardHitler 11-18-2004, 10:42 AM I'm really still compiling my own collection so some of these are unknown to me. Fawlt is awesome, hard to top, I'll need to familiarize myself with those above it, besides Vicar which IU love, but wouldn't have put above Fawlty myself.
Is Bottom not a SitCom proper? it's my favorite, at least right now, Rik and Ade are about as good as it gets at physical comedy, Rik must have spent many an hour studying his own face, he does a million things with it.

kellynch 12-10-2004, 02:24 PM I am VERY new here, and must be older than the lot of you, because my top 10 would have to include "Doctor in the House." That has to be one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, bar none.

i personally didnt care for many of the newer britcoms imported to the states. dibley, i just didnt like at all. and as time goes by, keeping up appearances, were very one dimensional i felt. i wish they had a better selection of oldies on bbc america also. its about the same as ive been seeing on pbs here for many yrs.:(

Luckymama58 07-06-2008, 08:03 AM I can agree with all of you, but one of my favs hasn't been mentioned.... I have gotten hooked on the new show on BBC America "Not Going Out" Dunno if that new one will ever make anyone's top ten, but maybe if it has a long enough run.... I think it has top ten potential.
Coupling (the first three seasons at least) are a guilty pleasure.
I miss The Vicar of Dibley and Black Adder.... thank God for TV online and DVD.
BTW I think Britcoms have anything we are producing here in the U.S. hands down. We used to have fun sitcoms, but lately they seem to lack originality. IMHO

The Vicar of Dibley
To the manor born
Fawlty Towers
