He's a odd lookin dude. He looks like Stephen King LOL. What's his name on the show? I was watching a old rerun a couple of days ago where Jennifer Esposito was on the show & she had been raped. He was investigating her case & i thought he might get close to her as far as going out on a date with her. They were gonna go on a date but she got murdered before they went out. Somebody had sent a package to her house & she didn't know there was a bomb in it. Jennifer is very attractive.

I forget his first name but his last name is Mulch. He was on the t.v show Homicide: Life on the Streets playing the same character. What's strange about that is that those show are not produced by the same production company!

John Munch is his name. I would love it if he would replace Jerry Orbach even though Jerry will be a tough act to follow and will be missed, Richard comes close.

Munch is kinda the SVU counterpart to Lenny Briscoe--the cynical, wisecracking loner with compassion just below the surface. In both cases it was inspired casting, Jerry Orbach having come out of musical theatre and Richard Belzer being a stand-up comedian. Who woulda thought, huh?

I saw that episode with Jennifer Esposito just recently too. Wonderful stuff! I always love when the detectives get to show their vulnerable, human sides. Remember Munch on the roof with Benson, nearly in tears remembering a little girl who lived across the street from him in his childhood and who died at the hands of an abusive father? There have been other instances where his facade cracked a bit, just like there have with Ice T (like with Gloria Reuben's character, as someone mentioned elsewhere). I especially loooved the recent episode with the Nigerian children who were smuggled into the US as slaves--Tutuola was almost crying at the end of that one.

It could be interesting to see Richard step into Jerry's shoes, but I bet they will bring in a completely new character. It would be a great loss to SVU if Munch was no longer there to play off of Tutuola IMHO.

Richard Belzer is a stand up comedian? LOL. That's hard to believe. He doesn't look like he's funny.

Yes, isiahthomas, Richard Belzer had been a comedian. Here is the link to his cast bio on NBC's website, that mentions some of his comedic efforts:

Richard Belzer (AKA The Belz) has been a comic for decades before he became a TV detective. He is also an author and has written some funny books, particularly his conspiracy theory tome "UFO's, JFK And Elvis - Conspiracies you don't have to be crazy to believe."

Blez originated the character Detective Munch on the NBC series "Homicide, Life On The Street."

A bit of trivia, The character of Det. Munch has appeared on numerous series over the years:

Law And Order
The X-Files
The Beat
and currently Law And Order SVU.

The thing I love about Richard Belzer and the character of John Munch is how well he plays off of other people. I loved "Homicide" but he really came into his own when they did those cross over shows with L&O. He and Jerry Orbach's character, Lenny Brisco, were a riot together. Now on SVU he and Ice T's character, Fin, make a great team, exchanging witty rapartee. One of my favorites was on a show where a teacher was raped and killed and her secret sex addiction came out in the investigation. Munch wants to play show and tell with secret revelations and reveals to Fin that he once posed nude and his ex girlfriend hung the picture in a gallery show. Then to bait Fin he asks him if there are any little dirty secrets he would like to share and Fin, without missing a beat says, "Yeah, I'm a Republican!" LOL I laughed so hard! I dunno what each of their political leanings are in real life, but the fact that their characters are on opposite sides of the political spectrum on the show makes for some great drama and humor! Most of the time I watch SVU just to see Munch and Fin in action with each other! LOL
