Why did Buzz, Sonja, Fran, ellen, Eunice lift mamas family?
I know fran dies but what happen to the others ? Did that say some thing about in the show? And can you tell me why they lift in rael life?

Buzz and Sonia went to live with their mother I think. I guess when the show went into syndication they wanted to change characters. A lot of this had to do with Carol Burnett's and Joe Hamilton's divorce. I'm not sure of the reasons so I will leave it at that.:confused:

I'm not sure of the reasons so I will leave it at that.:confused: I would assume that Buzz and Sonia would have been in college by that time since 2 seasons had past since Mama's Family was cancelled by NBC. After all, Mama referred to Buzz and Sonia in the first syndicated episode by saying,"No Buzz and Sonia."

Fran and Ellen had to leave because of their starring roles in "The Golden Girls" Ellen actually appeared in one syndicated episode (when she was in the hospital for her fanny tuck) I think Buzz and Sonja just didn't come back because they weren't very good. I personally think Ellen would have stayed and done more syndicated episodes if she hadn't been on The Golden Girls.

After the show was canceled, new life and ideas needed to be brought in. I personally think the syndicated episodes were the very best.

Buzz probably went to college and Sonya probably just moved out. Or maybe she went to college... The early Sonya wouldn't go to college, but then she randomly became an obedient, respectful, smart girl in the last half of season 2.


Eunice and Ed moved to Florida.


Ellen technically never left, but she just stopped coming over I guess.


Does anyone know why the show started with the chili cook off episode and not Farewell Frannie? That would have made a lot more sense.

The Boylens had always lived across the street, so Iola Boylen just started popping in all of a sudden. However, in the flashback episode of the Mother's Day banquet with Eunice and several other episodes, it is revealed that Iola and Vint knew eachother in childhood. Basically, Iola's character just developed in the synidcated episodes.

Mama does discuss Fran's death. That epiosde was on this morning. She tells how Fran died and they have her funeral. Fran dies from choking on a toothpick in the bathroom at the Bigger Jigger.

Yeah, TBS did show it. I just put it on DVD from this last airing on Thursday.

Fran inhaled a toothpick at the Bigger Jigger and choked to death.

Iola just popped out of nowhere.

I am pretty sue that it was mentioned that the kids went to live with their mother. But I can't remember which ep it was. It was probably in one of the early syndie episodes which are being run now so I will have to l see where I thought I had heard that! :crazy:

Also, in the chili cook off episode, Iola and Vint clearly knew eachother in high school. And in one episode she was talking about Ellen and Eunice's neglected dolls. So clearly, she used to go there a lot.

No Penny, sorry to break it to ya, but that was never mentioned. The only reference to Buzz and Sonja in syndication is when Mama says "No Buzz and Sonja" twice in "Farewell, Frannie" in her list of funeral no-shows.

Mitzi was only referred to 4 times---"Vint and the Kids Move In", "Naomi and the Stork", and "Uncle Roy".

That conversation between Iola and Mama basically was the transition between the NBC and syndicated versions as well as the introduction of Bubba (who, if I'm not mistaken, was never mentioned once during the NBC years despite having been around on the Carol Burnett Show).
Had Golden Girls not been the hit it was, I'm sure Betty White would have come back for some more syndicated episodes. She nailed her part and meshed well with everyone. I always thought it would have been nice to have as much of the cast as possible back for the final episode (no Fran or Eunice of course, which means no Ed either). The show really just stopped.
