We all talk about The Nanny being like ILL but what about I Married Joan?
I haven't seen that show. Is it a lot like ILL as people say?

Yes, a real copy with daffy Joan Davis. There was even a rumor that Lucy resented the competition and she had bought all the films and had them destroyed, but that was bull, as they showed up on tv on a Christian network at one point.

I watched it when it aired on Nick at Nite or The Family Channel in the 1980s (I don't remember which one aired I Married Joan). It was an I Love Lucy wannabe, not very funny, IMO. I heard that Jim Backus and Joan Davis didn't like each other, and she was very difficult to work with.

The show airs on the obscure cable channel FamilyNet Thursdays at 6AM and Fridays at 4:30PM ET.

The thing I remember most about IMJ is there was no music in the show. The theme was sung by a men's chorus acappella, and when they needed background music when Joan was doing something wacky the men's chorus hummed or sang la la la la's! Maybe it was a gimmick to get people to watch, or perhaps NBC was cheaping out and saving money on a band!

I saw it when It was on CBN in the early 1980's. I don't remember much about it except that I liked it.

It was OK, she was funny, but she wasn't Lucy, that's for sure. It didn't run very long either.

That sounds more like Alice; where his character's name was Paco

Correct, Desi did not star on I Love Lucy imitations back then, but he did appear on Alice because Bob and Madelyn wrote it and he had unretired for financial reasons.

Maybe it wasn't I Married Joan, but I think she's right about him guest starring on some other series back in the 50's. I think I read it somewhere too.

No, I'm not talking about SNL. I'm talking about some show in the 50's. And I don't remember him on any game shows either.

He, like Lucy did many game shows in the 50's, What's My Line and I've got a secret come to mind. Tangible enough for ya?

You said game shows for gambling money, not a carton of cigarettes.

Was the show Desi guest starred on called The in-Laws---or something like that? I know about the Alice one--I have that one on tape.

I remember The Mothers-in-Law. It only aired for one or two seasons in the mid 1960s and starred Eve Arden and Kay Ballard. I heard Desi guest starred on an episode, but don't remember seeing it.

I did see it and vaguely remember it, it was so so. Same as Lucy, it meant more because it was Desi actually doing something different from i Love Lucy, but the show was up against Ed Sullivan, so it didn't have a chance, it lasted one and a half seasons i think. There was ONE Lucy reference. Eve Arden is dancing with her husband and he says something like, who's the gorgeous redhead and Eve answers, WELL IT AIN'T LUCILLE BALL! Got a HUGE laugh of course. Desi got blackmailed by one of the stars for a huge pay hike, so he replaced him with a different actor in the second season. I don't think i ever saw that actor again.

I may be wrong, but i think that richard Deacon replaced that actor, Roger C Carmel! Richard had starred on Dick Van Dyke of course and in the Tallulah ep of the Lucy Desi comedy hour!
