They could have expanded the role of lamont and gave him a steady girlfriend and more screen time for Rollo since he and Lamont were good friends instead of a BABYSITTER-(Grady) for a 32 year old man. Have a occassional appearance by Aunt Esther since she was Lamont's Aunt and a appearance by Julio since he and Lamont was also friends. I feel the characters Bubba, and Grady were not needed because they were friends of Fred so why would they be visiting? If you notice, Donna was not in any of the eps Fred was missing in because her character was LINKED to Fred like Grady and Bubba and her appearance on the show during that time would not have made sense.

Seeing Grady as Lamont's babysitter was just too crazy for me which is why i did not watch the last 6 eps on the 3rd season DVD.

Hmm...that MIGHT have been a good idea...but then, it would have become a different show...and you KNOW the networks weren't going to mess up a good thing...hence, Grady the "babysitter" (not quite as outlandish as you think, considering how much Fred really "trusted" his son...sad, when you think about it.)

How would it have become a different show? It would have just been CENTERED around Lamont a lot more until Fred returned from St. Louis.

I think that was wanted a crusty old man in that spot. I thought he was there to help Lamont with the junkyard while Lamont was scavaging for more junk? I thought that was the angle??

But Grady wasn't involved in the business, he was there to look after a 32 year old man.-LOL Think about it, out of the 9 eps Fred was gone, when was Grady ever involved in selling junk?

Chalk it up to yet another Missed Opportunity by the network (though you have to consider this: How funny a show would it have been just concentrating on Lamont? I mean, let's face facts: Demond Wilson's character was never really all that funny on his own...he needed someone to play off of, and although Rollo had his moments, it wouldn't have been the same. Grady, he could play off of. It added the necessary conflict that viewers had been used to for the previous two and a half seasons, and in the event that Redd Foxx DIDN'T come back, they could contiue the show with the concept basically unaltered. As I wrote elsewhere on this board, It's Always About The Benjamins...)

If Redd Foxx decided to leave the show for good..Sanford and Son would be canceled in the 4th season; he (Foxx) was the reason why the viewers watched the show...Lamont and Grady together was dull and do not have a strong chemistry nor did the actor have the personality to carry the show like Redd Foxx....

They tried to carry the show without Redd Foxx when Sanford Arms premiered but it lasted just a month.

I am sure that they probably had the scripts ready with Fred in the lead. When he took his leave it was just easier to have Grady take his place without having to re-write the entire show.

2 of my all time favorite episodes are without Redd Foxx.

I AGREE 100%. Grady was VERY DULL

Perhaps you're right about Grady not selling junk but Fred didn't sell much either when you think about it. ;) But like I said they needed a crust old man to fill that spot, Certainly Grady was no Fred but he filled the void till Fred got back.

It probably would have been better if Grady and Lamont sold junk instead of Grady telling a 32 year old man he couldn't have female company.

"Fred's Treasure Garden" is another decent Grady episode. Especially when Hoppy and Smitty get drunk on those MintChipple's.

That entire situation made Lamont look weird.
