I was watching this episode on TV Land Saturday morning and noticed that an important part was left out that is on the dvd. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this too.

Harrison and Evelyn are sitting in the living room while Rob and Laura are in the kitchen. Ritchie comes in and starts talking to them. During their conversation, Harrison asks Ritchie if he has any brothers or sisters. He says something like, "No, but Daddy says I'll have a brother someday." Then, the scene goes to the kitchen where Rob and Laura are eavesdropping. Rob then says to Laura, "I've been meaning to talk to you about that."

I thought it was significant since it's pretty much the only time that Rob talks to Laura directly about having any more kids. Seeing it on the dvd the first time kind of caught be by surprise I guess, because it's always been cut from either Nick @ Nite or TV Land. I just thought it was interesting. ;)

Carrie, you will see a lot of that type of thing when you compare the TV Land shows to the DVD uncut versions. TV Land has cut quite a bit. Thank goodness for the DVDs. I can't wait for season 4 next month!

After the opening, the announcer says "with guest star, DANNY THOMAS" and they show a picture of him in that scene where he comes through the door. I don't own the DVD (yet), but I remember seeing that part in the episode years ago, when I was first discovering it in sydnicated reruns on our local station.

I guess DVDs aren't 100% unedited after all, then Oh wwell. I guess there's just some scenes in TV shows that we'll never see again.

no, wait, I just thought of this: since that scene used to be in it in the early 70s (when I remember seeing it) maybe there was some sort of legal trouble or something over it, and they had to remove it from all the prints of the episode. I know that probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but sometimes Hollywood doesn't make sense.:D :D

Maybe that was something that was added for syndication? In which case, the episode wouldn't really be edited. I know some other classic shows sometimes have slightly different openings and even theme music in syndication, but I wonder why this would have only been in the syndication prints?

This is true, as when The Dick Van Dyke Show was rerun in the late 1960s, producers of syndication changed the name of the show (I'm not sure what it was called, though).

then that probably answers a question I asked in another thread, about why some of the episodes were called "The Dick Van Dyke daytime show" when N@N first started showing it, about 88 or 89.
