Anyone ever listen to a song that they thought was strange? There are two examples of songs that I think fit this category in my opinion. The first is The Beatles' "I Am the Walrus." The music, the faint Shakespeare lines in the background, and John Lennon make it a weird song.

There is also a song by Prince called "Erotic City." I heard this song a number of times when a now-defunct (:() 80s station played it. It was hard for me to understand the words until I looked it up on the internet. I was surprised at what I saw. The tempo, the beat, the music, Prince, the editing out of the f-word and a female singer that I *think* was Sheila E made it a strange song. But an enjoyable one for me.

Any other songs you think are weird?

I've never actually heard Erotic City on the radio (I was about 5 years old during Purple Rain mania, and the 80's station here only plays 1999, Lets Go Crazy and When Doves Cry), how did they edit "we can .... until the dawn"? I couldn't see how they could change it unless they rerecorded new words.

There was a station here that inserted a drum beat where the f word would go, so that that word would be inaudible. I remember after Prince's Kiss came out, they'd substitute the f word in Erotic City with kiss: we can kiss until the dawn.

Along the lines of weird songs trivia, can anyone name a song where you can say the title without opening your mouth? Hint: 1994.

That's how it was played on what was one my favorite (but now defunct) station.

I think you're talking about "Mmm...mmm...mmm...mmm" or something along those lines. I remember Weird Al made a spoof of that song called, "Mmm....mmm...mmm...Better"

You're right, Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the Crash Test Dummies. (I always hated that song.)

"Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" by Paul (and Linda) McCartney. There's no one left at home and I believe I'm gonna rain? The butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie? Wha?

The kettle's on the boil. . . .

The Shakespearean verse is from King Lear, Act IV, Scene VI.
You hear the following lines in the chorus, after the line "Standing in the English rain:"

Gloucester: Now, good sir, what are you?

Edgar: A man made tame by fortune's blows.

In the fadeout you hear Oswald's death scene.

Oswald: Villain. . .bury my my body. . .and give the letters which thou findst about me to Edmund, Earl of Gloucester. Seek him out upon the English party. O, untimely death! Death! (He dies.)

Edgar: I know thee well. A serviceable villain, as duteous to the vices of thy mistress as badness would desire.

Gloucester: What, is he dead?

Edgar: Sit you down, father; rest you.

John Gielgud played Lear in this radio production, and Lear is in this scene, but John Lennon didn't pick up the part with Gielgud's appearance.

I recite these lines at singalongs of "I Am the Walrus" at Beatles conventions!

I love "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," too, but John Lennon always hated it. And George Harrison complained it was "fruity." Ah, well. . . .

Some good weird songs:

"Peaches In Regalia" by Frank Zappa.

"Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" by Primus.

Just about anything by those two is guaranteed to be weird. They're great!!

Roy Harper is best known to Americans as the guest vocalist on Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar," but he's also an esteemed British folk rocker. :)

Ah yes, I know who Roy Harper is. I'm not familiar however of any music he did besides the vocal track on Have a Cigar:)

"Weird" songs. Two words. Dr. Demento. But, I like "weird" songs, so I listened to his radio program and bought his "Greatest Novelty Records of All Time" (six lps, limited edition, signed) set.

Here is a selection of the "weirdest" of the "weird" from that set.

1940s Okeh Laughing Song
1950s Tranfusion / Nervous Norvus
1960s Tip-toe Through the Tulips with Me / Tiny Tim
1970s Time Warp / The Rocky Horror Picture Show
1980s Bedrock Rap / Bruce Springstone
Xmas I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas / Yorgi Yorgeson

Enjoy!
