View Full Version : Lucy in Havana
Great to see the 'Comedy Hour' episodes back on TV Land. Today's episode was excellent, except the abrupt ending. This episode was originally 1:15, wasn't it. I'm guessing that the real episode dealt in more detail how her and her friend wound hid in the net and Ricky and the others getting their paperwork. The three guest stars today were also really good, they had great chemistry with th regulars and the episode just gelled so well.
Kazza 03-21-2004, 05:26 PM Cruise to Havana is my favorite ep of the LDCH. This ep was 75 min long originally but as we all know; we don't get to see that anymore:rolleyes: My fav musical number is the 'That means I love you' where Lucy joins Ricky in the drum playing; the look they gave each other at the end was fantastic as if they were madly in love again.
dawsongirl 03-21-2004, 09:37 PM The remaining 15 mins is at the beginning if I'm understanding right. Hedda Hopper comes to interview the Ricardos and they somehow get to talking about how they met.

That's my understanding too; HH comes over to interview them about how they met (I guess that interviewer/ee part was so boring they had to cut it off) jk :D
SPLAIN 03-22-2004, 10:19 AM Well, TV had never done a show that was an hour and fifteen minutes, so head of CBS Bill Paily said cut it down or pad it to an hour and a half, Desi would do neither, so he persuaded the head of US Steel to give him fifteen minutes from his own show, and the show ran an hour and fifteen minutes and US Steel which was a loser in the ratings got it's best ratings ever with Lucy Desi as a lead in. But in reruns they cut it down to fit the time slots allotted to the series.
ricardo/mertz 03-22-2004, 11:28 AM If it ever comes out on DVD I hope they add the lost 15 minutes back in. I never knew all of that.
SPLAIN 03-22-2004, 02:14 PM Well, if we've never seen it except when it aired originally and even I was a little young to remember that, then it couldn't have been that great to begin with, and so i don;t think we missed much. I was always under the impression it was musical numbers but i guess an interview intro makes more sense. Especially with the power Hedda had at the time and the fact that Lucy and Desi felt they owed her for her help in the communist episode, they would want to protect her part in the show. Just a theory.

SPLAIN 03-22-2004, 03:26 PM Well, can you imagine what a coup it was to get a part on the most watched television series or in this case Lucy specials? Hedda was scooping her competition Louella Parsons, by appearing a SECOND time with the most popular TV icons of the era, regardless of what the idiots at TV Land think. She has this great big part, remember Hedda was a B actress whose career never went anywhere, and she is a big focus of the show, and they cut it down to nothing because they have to run it at an hour instead of 75 minutes. Remember that Hedda RAN Hollywood and had people quaking in their boots at that time, although her power slowly diminished after this period. Oh, i just remembered she was in the Desilu Revue also, Lucy always took very good care of her friends. I can just imagine Desi telling Lucy, we have to cut her out of the show, you know the woman that helped us so much in that communist debacle.
Lodee 03-22-2004, 03:29 PM Okay I get what you're saying. If they had to cut the show down to one hour they would have protected her part. Thanks for the explanation.
SPLAIN 03-22-2004, 03:41 PM Hey, it's just an opinion, i would have to see the 75 minute show to know for sure, like i said i always thought it was musical numbers that made the show too long and Desi was quoted as saying cutting it weakened it and padding it would also.
Amber8611 03-22-2004, 06:19 PM "Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana" is a great episode. I caught the end of it on TVLand, Sunday. It's about time they put this show back on. :)
SPLAIN 03-23-2004, 10:45 AM When i was a kid, CBS played it every summer from June to August.
Ethel2Tillie 03-26-2004, 10:16 AM This is my favorite episode of the LDCH. I would give anything to see the lost 15 minutes of it.

Aww....that's great. Getting any sleep? ;)
Ethel2Tillie 03-31-2004, 03:37 PM I'm getting a little more sleep lately, because she started sleeping through the night 2 weeks ago. I'm still not getting enough sleep, though! That will probably be the case for the next 18 years or so.
SPLAIN 04-01-2004, 09:46 PM Does she watch Lucy yet? Does she recognize the theme song when she hears it, with a little smile and maybe a little dribble?

Ethel2Tillie 04-02-2004, 04:11 PM Not yet! I'm sure she will soon, though!
I was at the Cathy's Closet website the other day, and in the Coming Soon section Cathy has little pink baby outfits with pictures of Lucy all over it. I'll try to sweet talk my husband into letting me get one for her. :D
SPLAIN 04-03-2004, 07:39 PM Sweet talk your hubby????? Geez, another Lucy Ricardo tradition lives on!

That would be so cute! Girls are so much cuter to dress than boys! Although my son did look pretty cute in his Fred nightshirt and cap. :)

When I found out I was having a girl, everyone told me how fun it is to dress girls. They all said that girls' clothes are so much cuter than boys' clothes. So far that does seem to be true!
Lodee 04-04-2004, 07:37 PM I had a niece I could buy for but it wasn't the same. :( When they get older boys are less maintenence though so it does even out I guess.
SPLAIN 04-04-2004, 08:29 PM I dunno Shannon, i was a real groovy sight in that red chiffon strapless number i used to wear to school, LOL!
ricardo/mertz 04-04-2004, 09:42 PM I agree w/ boys being less maintenence.
With boys it is jeans a t shirt and sneakers.
Girls it is jeans a t shirt, matching shoes, matching hair barrettes, matching earrings and a matching purse.
I have one of each. They are as different as night and day. But, they are starting to get along. The older they get.
Lodee 04-05-2004, 03:50 PM Girls it is jeans a t shirt, matching shoes, matching hair barrettes, matching earrings and a matching purse.
You're right about that. And it takes my neice about 4 times as long to get ready too. Hairspray, hair gel, curling iron........:)
ricardo/mertz 04-05-2004, 04:20 PM At least w/ boys you don't get, hey how does this look? You say good and they go change anyway. But, I'm afraid I am guilty of doing the same thing to my husband.
Lodee 04-06-2004, 03:45 PM With boys you tell them it looks BAD and they DON'T go change!
ricardo/mertz 04-06-2004, 04:34 PM If Itell my son something looks bad that gives him all the more reason to wear it.
