I've always thought that the wristwatch Gilligan wore didn't look appropriate for someone in his line of work.

Nowadays a fisherman or ship mate - if he wore one - would have some kind of swimming-appropriate type of watch.

Gilligan's looks more like something an academic type would wear.

I don't think it really matters. I don't think Gilligan could tell time anyway.
