I have only flown twice in my life. We went from Atlanta, GA to Memphis, TN in Early January 2001 roundtrip so I could say I have flown. We saw things in Memphis like Graceland and came back 2 days later. Flew on a Boeing 727 going to Memphis and an MD-80 on the way back. I loved it. The weather was perfect so there was no turblence and the planes were rather empty. The returning flight only had 50 or 60 people. I am hoping to one day fly to Europe and Asia and other places. :)

What are some of ya'll's flying experiences?

My experiences flying, were mostly good, until my anxiety kicked in. :o

flying really scares me. and after watching a certain episode of beyond belief, i will never sit in the window seat again.

I've been on a total of 11 plane rides in my life (not # of trips, but going both ways), I believe. All of them have been within the continental US and I never had any probably. Although last year when my family and I went to Florida there was little turbulence on the way down and my mom was freaking out a little at the end. It didn't bother me for some reason. Although, even though I've never flew over an ocean if I ever do I'll be scared! Maybe because if something does go wrong it's not like you can land anywhere. But I have no probably at all flying on land!

My mom was a nervous wreck. She was very paranoid about planes(this was before 9/11, but there still were plane crashes occasionally). Well we convinced her to go. I sat by the window, she sat on the aisle seat with my dad, and my sister sat by a window too. It was so cool. I could pick out a big lake in Northwest Alabama from the plane. It was so fascinating. I think the ocean will be freaky too, but just remember, plane crashes are EXTREMELY rare. Millions and millions of people fly each day, the last time a jet crashed here in America was 2 1/2 years ago. Flying is a LOT safer than riding in a car, bus, or train.

i've been on too many planes in my lifetime, and the only ones i didn't like were the DC10's and DC3's - only time i've ever had to use an air-sickness bag too.... well at least for what they were intended for . . .

I don't like to fly, it hurts my arms...

Fine, I guess. I have a tendency to not eat or drink on a plane because I refuse to use the airplane bathroom, so I usually end up sick, moody, or really thirsty.

Once on a flight from Phoenix, I blew out my middle ear. That flight sucked.

With the exception of ear popping and horrible food, I love flying. I've flown so many times and I love it more every time. I especially love wandering around airports and exploring all the shops and the people that come and go. I've never really counted the amount of times I've flown, but I remember them.

Yeah, I've flown countless times. Nothing spectacular to report. I do love to fly, though. I don't like the flight attendants' tendency to wake one up when one is clearly sleeping, though.

That has to be annoying. For god's sake, if the plane isn't on fire, or your all about to die, why wake them? :rolleyes:

Orlando Airport was a nightmare.
Taking off from Orlando in a thunderstorm (I'm not kidding) was a nightmare. Once we got out of Florida, smooth sailing.

I remember coming back to Spokane from Houston, where I was part of my brother's wedding.

I had to wake up at 5:00 am CDT (which is 3:00 my time) to make my 7:15 flight, as Houston Hobby Airport was actually pretty far away from where I was staying.

It was going to be a long flight. I had to fly from Houston to Albuquerque, NM to Seattle to Spokane. I wouldn't get home until about 3:00 my time.

So on the long flight from Houston to Albuquerque, I fell asleep. It was a nice, blissful sleep. I was awoken by a flight attendant who wanted to know if I wanted something to drink.

Of course, I couldn't fall back asleep after that. What a difficult life I lead. :)

Worst plane ride I've ever been on was for Florida, so many hours too. It hit an airpocket, it was scary. It felt like it was going to fall apart inthe air, also. On the way there and back, which is weird. And Florida was the worst place I've ever been, so it wasn't worth it.

I've been on planes lots of times, been to a couple countries too. But Florida tops all of that. I said I'd never go on a plane again and so far I haven't. That was in 2002. I probably will eventually though since my family plan to go to Europe either later this year or next year.

Out of all the airports I've been to, Gatwick was the coolest outside of the states. O'Hare is my favorite within the states.

Des Moines is a boring airport. They won't let you go upstairs unless you have a ticket, so you're stuck with a gift shop and baggage. :p

It rotates everytime someone flushes it. It's the greatest thing ever. My cousin was so excited to tell me about it when she came out of the bathroom. :lol:

I had never been afraid to fly until a few years ago. In fact it used to be that I couldn't wait to get on a plane and go somewhere.

A few years ago I took a trip to Disneyworld with a couple of my friends. We were flying from Seattle to DC then on to Orlando. The flight from Seattle to DC was great, not even any turbulence. Well from DC to Orlando was a nightmare. I was sitting next to this lady who wouldn't shut up about her job, and she told me that she takes the flight to Orlando quite often, blah,blah,blah. We are getting ready to land and the plane starts to descend, then the pilot violently pulls the plane back up. We heard dishes crashing, and things falling in the back of the plane. Then we pass the airport and circle around, he would start to descend again and pull the plane back up again, and he kept doing it.

Meanwhile, no one was saying anything. No word from the crew at all. Then the lady sitting next to me, the one that flew that route time and time again started to panic, so I started to panic. I over heard someone say that if we go towards the ocean, that means hes gonna crash the plane. Oh my gosh, the fear was horrible, and the look on the passengers faces was scary, no one was completly calm, but everyone stayed in their seats. I kept hearing people say its the landing gear. We circled around orlando for about 45min.

Finally after we land and we are safely on the ground, the piolet tells us that we didn't have clearence to land yet. :rolleyes:

Then I had to fly home after that, which was another bad experience in a different way, but thats a whole other story.

Now, I'm totally afraid of flying, I have flown once since, and I was scared to death the whole flight there and back. I am going to Minnesota next month and I'm feeling uneasy about it.

I want to go to Chicago too.

Hartsfield-Atlanta is one of the busiest in the world(I think it's 2nd busiest, O'Hare is 1st). That airport is a crowded mess. It's about 80 miles north of here. All the airports around here are regional airports and they take you to Atlanta and then you get on another plane to go where you want to go. Annoying.

I have noticed the cheap airfares to Europe... WOW.

I've flown to Europe and to Florida. The European flight was too long for me. The flight to Florida was only a couple hours but for some reason I couldn't wait to get off that plane. I was very nervous.

I've flown 4 times

All out of Pittsburgh.

Once to Boston, once to Nashville and twice to California.

I hated flying before 9/11. The second trip to California was last summer and the first one since 9/11. I dont know why I'm afraid to fly (the post 9/11 reason I know why) but I am. Last summer instead of taking the easy way to fly to Savannah GA I drove all the way - and then to Orlando and then drove all the way back to PA.

Flying into LAX was fine - it was 2 a.m. No one else there. LEAVING there was a complete nightmare. It was 7:30 a.m., there were 400 THOUSAND people there, the lines were nightmare long, the food overpriced and gross. I'd rather fly to some small air port and get a commuter than go through that place again. Also leaving the airport there was a severe storm that we got caught in once in flight. That sucked royally.

I'm *supposed* to go to Cali again this summer for work but I dont know if I'm going to go. The fundraising (they dont pay us to go, they want us to go but we pay for it ourselves) isn't going all that well and I hated that trip.

Here's the key when travelling to a major airport... don't land or leave during the 6-11am time or in the evening. The best times to be at an airport are the early to mid afternoon or after 9 or 10pm. 6-11am is rush hour at most airports, then the evening is when a lot of Europe-bound flights leave so they can arrive early the next morning.

ive flown from here...ri to orlando many times, and all my flights were good...with the exception of the first one, when i vomited...a lot.

I've only been on a plane once. My friend and I flew home from Florida by ourselves. I wasn't really scared....and it wasn't bad at all.

Plus, I used to commute to my dad's every weekend by a small plane when I was still in school. So I've been a veteran to planes for 14 years. :D

Gatwick was pretty interesting, I can say that...I liked how you could take the train to the Victoria train station here in London. :D

I've never flown before. I've been to 5 different states and I've never even left the time zone. I'm such a loser.

I've never been on an airplane and I'll only get on one if I'm forced to. :) I'm a pessimistic little baby and think it's going to crash or something. :lol:

It wasn't the airport's fault the Planes originated there. Security has dramatically improved since 9/11. If someone tried to do what they did on 9/11 today, I think the passengers will attack the people that try. Can't see how it will happen in the U.S. again.

The only thing I'm afraid of if I go to Europe one day is all the water the plane will go over, but planes go over it everyday many times a day and don't crash, so it's pretty safe.

Before 2002, I hadn't flown in an airplane for over a decade. I went on round trips to Northern California and Colorado in a span of 2-3 months. I was fine both times. I did get a little anxious because of 9-11 but I was fine overall. Oakland and Denver have great airports. Denver's airport is like in the middle of nowhere (it is actually a little close to Denver but it is isolated a little). I'm probably going to be flying again in May when I go to visit my sister, brother-in-law, and my niece.

yeah... last summer my dad was dropping me and my brother off at our gate, and even though he wasnt going on the plane they made him take off his sandals so they could make sure there werent any weapons in them. and it's not just in airports that freak out so much... pretty much everywhere. at the tuscon electric park you can only bring water bottles if they havent been open yet because someone might have put poison in them. and when i went to see metallica i was wearing an assload of studded bracelets and they made me take them all off and put them in a little room with everyone else's so i couldnt use them as weapons. *******s.

The one from Newark crashed 2 hours from where I live. It most likely, based on the path described, flew right over my town.

I know what you mean. My uncle just recently moved from Maine, and when he would fly down here from time-to-time, he would also leave from Boston where the two planes that hit the WTC originated.

I love flying; the only thing that I don't like and that remember the most is that since I couldn't relax took a Dramamine and started acting groovy. My brother was sitting next to me and I kept asking him all kinds of stupid questions; I was completly out of whack :rolleyes:

The only thing is that it's been about 10yrs since I've taken an airplane.:( ...I moved from my homeland to TX and have remained faithful to the bluebonets and cowboys. LOL

Yeah, it's VERY safe. We had no turblence at all while flying over the Atlantic to England...It was only when we started to touch down at Gatwick that we experienced minor turblence... it wasn't too bad, though...But England is pretty windy (in fact, it was REALLY windy today...people's umbrellas kept getting blown away), so that's understandable. It just takes a really long time to fly over the ocean because the continents are so far apart. My plane left Minneapolis on Sunday at like...7pm and we got there by 8:50am, London time, on Monday morning...it was 2:50am Central time when we touched down, so it took nearly 8 hours to get there, about 5 hours over the ocean, I think.

It pretty much is in the middle of nowhere. It's a 30 minute drive northeast of the city center, and you go through nothing but grassy fields to get there. It's a good thing we have one hell of a transportation system or else ther'd be a lot of cranky travelers, me included.

Expect much longer flights coming back. My flighs were (going east) 2 hours from Chicago to Raleigh-Durham, 7 hours from Raleigh-Durham to Gatwick, and 2 1/2 hours from Gatwick to Kraków. Coming back it was 2 hours 45 minutes from Kraków to Gatwick, 8 1/2 hours from Gatwick to Raleigh-Durham, and 2 hours 15 minutes from Raleigh-Durham to Chicago.

I'm leaving Wednesday afternoon @ 1.45pm London time (7.45am Central), and I have two layovers on the way home. One in Detroit at 5.25pm Eastern and another one in Minneapolis at 8pm Central. Then my expected arrival is about 10.15pm. Yay, I'm excited. :rolleyes:

It takes longer coming back from Europe because your going against the jet stream(meaning it slows the plane down). When your going to Europe(or going east ANYWHERE for that matter), it's always shorter, because the jet stream goes west to east.

BTW Miss Vicki: Did you see the anti-war protestors in London today? I saw some on the news climbed the Tower of London(where the clock is) and held up signs. They say they bypassed supposedly "tight" security.

Just wait for your flights to be delayed for whatever reasons.

I left my house in Poland at 4am Tuesday morning (9pm Monday night Central Time). I left Kraków 20 minutes late, London an hour late, and Raleigh 2 1/2 hours late. I didn't get back home at my uncles until 11:40pm (6:40am Wednesday morning Central Europeon Time). That's 27 hours with no sleep, food, or rest. It was all rush, rush because of loading problems in London and huge snowstorms delaying flights into Chicago.

From New York State, to North Carolina, to Florida! I hated flying. And even after 9/11, I'm never going to fly again.:(

No, I didn't see them (we weren't in that area), and you mean Big Ben. Tower of London is a castle and not that tall. I got to tour the Tower of London a few days ago, actually. But, I did see a bunch of protestors about the same time too -- they were from Somalia and protesting about repression in their homeland. I didn't see any anti-war protestors.

I'm not sure, and my hotel room is 5 floors up so I don't exactly feel like going up to look. We flew Northwest Airlines and their planes aren't that big. The plane we went on over to London was somewhere in the middle - they had two seats by the windows and 5 seats in the middle. 9 seats total in every row.

Don't feel bad. I am a loser too. Except, I am a bigger loser than you because I have only been to one other state than my own (and it was in my own time zone, one state south of me). I've also never flown anywhere. My dad has been all over the place though for work. He flew to Turkey once (with plane changes or layovers in Europe and New York). He has also flown to Atlanta and Texas before. Grrr. So jealous and not allowed to go.

Aside from work, my parents do not like to travel or go on vacation anywhere close to resembling fun. All we do is go visit mean, selfish, and/or boring relatives.

But you can bet that I will be flying some place someday. I really want to. I think it would be a lot of fun.

That helps me. It was probably a DC-10. Northwest Airlines is still lagging behind and hasn't gotten the big monster planes yet like the 747 and 777 which can hold 300-400 people. I believe they are going to start using the Airbus A340 this fall into London, which is a pretty large plane as well, it's not made by Boeing, but it can hold 300+ people.

It defintely looks like the DC-10, the seating on there is exactly what you described, this is a picture of one:

No, I didn't see them (we weren't in that area), and you mean Big Ben. Tower of London is a castle and not that tall. I got to tour the Tower of London a few days ago, actually. But, I did see a bunch of protestors about the same time too -- they were from Somalia and protesting about repression in their homeland. I didn't see any anti-war protestors.

That's why you should have taken AA. They're my second favorite airlines, next to LOT. Every seat had their own tv screen right above the fold out table and you had about 10 channels to choose from to watch, ranging from 4 movies channels, 2 news channels, a CBS, Nickelodeon, Discovery, and Animal Planet. The food sucked (As does every airline food known to man), but the personal tv screen made it worth it. You even had your remote that's attached by a cable so you could change the channels with. And on the other side of the remote you have a phone. And it only cost me about $450 dollars to London roundtrip (My whole trip was $700 including a flight in and out of Kraków). I was one happy traveler. :D

I love airliners.net they have every single plane on this earth and millions of pictures of certain airliners and how their colors are.

I would much rather want to take AA, British Airways, or Virgin Atlantic to Europe. I love the fact they have TV screens, and some even have flight tracker's so you can see where your plane is! :)

Delta has started putting them in to, I know at least in the 757.

Bah, my dad's cheap. He insists on NW Airlines. The last time I rode AA was in January 1990, and I don't even remember it that well. The airport where I live has AA too (it's one of the two airlines it has, it's not a big airport), but yeah. Oh god, I'm gonna be bored out of my mind on the flight home on Wednesday. They showed some really depressing in-flight movies. None of them were comedy. :mad: They showed some violent movie w/ George Clooney in it and them a drama with Cuba Gooding, Jr. Yeah, it was really comforting watching a man shoot himself in the head at 4 AM. :o

That's the favorite part of the trip. I LOVE that. I think most overseas flights have them though. Both airlines I took overseas (AA and LOT) had them. I love how they give how many miles you've traveled, how many miles you have left, how many hours you've been in the air, hoe many hours you have left, current temperature, altitude, time in the time zone, etc. And the topographical maps are amazing. They zoom in a few times and show the geography of the region in and around you. England is pretty flat. :lol:

Ohhh yeah. That's what my plane had, too. It was sooooo cool. Esp. the time thing...It really helped when I had to set my watch before we touched down. :)

That is too cool. It's pretty cheap to fly to Europe right now... I guess it's because of terrorism fears(still). That's one positive thing to all the terrorism fears.

It actually wasn't too bad. London was the longest because it was my first stop in Europe. I had to fill out a landing card. Filling out the card took me about 45 minutes because I screwed up on it and the guy forced me to go to the back of the line and fill out another one. The waiting was what took so long. I checked into my second flight. Then I had to wait in line, have my picture taken, and go through the metal detector. All which took about 15 minutes. When I landed in Poland, I just had to give the man my passport so he could stamp it and then I was done.

When we got on the plane to London, the stewardesses gave everybody landing cards and they were to fill it out before we landed...I filled mine out and messed up on my birthday (I keep forgetting they do it DD-MM-YY over there), but I didn't have to redo it, thank God. :D

omg 1 tym i aksidenly wen on 1st clazz n da guy dat sat next 2 me wuz all 'do u wan da window seta' n da sturdezz or wuteva lol wuz like noooo but juzz in my mind n den i wuz all no so he wuz lyk ok n den i wen 2 da restroom n i herd da captin say 'return 2 ur seats' so i wen bak n i sed 2 da guy next 2 me 'did u hear dat' n he was all 'no' and i was all wtf ok lolziez den the plane malfunkshund n da wallz uv da plane fell off n da guy next 2 me fell out so if i wuz sittin der i woulda fell out lolziez.

One experience I'll never forget was watching the X-Files Movie on a flight to France (for work). I had never seen an episode of the X-files and after watching the movie, I loved it. I had to then catch up on all the repeats!!!!

I'm back in the good 'ole US of A!!! *kisses ground*

OK...so I won't kiss the ground, but I'm REALLY hapy to be back home now :D

BTW, I remembered to check what type of plane I was flying.


London ---> Detroit: DC-10 (2 seats, aisle, 5 seats, aisle, 2 seats)

Detroit ---> Minneapolis: 757 (3 seats, aisle, 3 seats)

Minneapolis ---> home: I dunno (2 seats, aisle, 3 seats)


The only plane I liked was the 757 - the seats were soooo comfy, considering they were in coach. :lol:
