SawgrassSteve 03-13-2004, 09:33 AM Carrie,
Being our newest member, I don't want you to think that we're ignoring your question here. It's a good one, but as you suspected, it has come up many times in various incarnations. Favorite episode, character, season, dream, flasback, one-Liner, Laura quote, Laura outfit, & others.
I must say though, I think you've given the longest, and best list of us all. I'll bet we all can find at least 5 of our own favorites in your list.
Just wanted you to know.
Steve
Lolac 03-13-2004, 08:43 PM Carrie, One of my very favorite episodes is "Coast to Coast Big Mouth." I haven't seen it in a long time and I'm very much looking forward to having it on DVD. I have many favorite episodes and many are on your list.

Pentimento 03-14-2004, 12:56 PM Well, as another newcomer to this site, this question is new to me. I have many favorites but if I had to narrow it down, these would be my top five:
"All About Eavesdropping"
"Pink Pills and Purple Parents"
"The Death of the Party"
"Don't Trip Over That Mountain"
"Long Night's Journey into Day"
I would also list "Too Many Stars" among my favorites, mainly for the hilarious song performed by Millie at the auditions.
Lolac 03-14-2004, 05:51 PM I just want to say how happy I am to see so many new people coming to this board! We love TDVDS fans!

Jorgy 03-14-2004, 08:02 PM Hello!!!
another (semi) newbie here...
I too have many many favourites but if I had to narrow it down to a few they would be...
"oh how we met the night that we danced"
"Ghost of A. Chance"
"the curious thing about women"
"what's in a middle name"
"Laura's Little Lie"
"that's my boy"
"to tell or not to tell"
"long nights journey into day"
"the lady and the babysitter"... wow...there are quite a few...lol
I haven't even seen "it may look like a walnut" (they didn't show it very often on TVLand) or "coast to coast big mouth" but i'm sure they'd be in my top episodes also...there are only a few episodes that i haven't seen but hopefully i will soon be getting the dvd sets...i can't wait!
Oh ya... before i forget, i was wondering... since the dvd's are uncut... are there any scenes that really stand out in any of the episodes that got cut from what tvland was showing?
Thanks a bunch,
Riley :happyface
Pentimento 03-15-2004, 11:41 AM Hi, Riley...
I've only recently obtained the Dick Van Dyke DVDs so I've only watched a few episodes so far. I'd expected to be able to notice which scenes had been deleted by TV Land (as I have with the first season of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" on DVD), but so far nothing seems different. I know the episodes must have been shortened by TV Land to allow for extra commercials, but maybe the cuts weren't entire scenes (as they were with MTM) so the missing parts aren't so obvious. I don't know.
Oh, and thanks for the welcome, Lolac.
SawgrassSteve 03-15-2004, 04:19 PM Yes, Pentimento
Lolac's very courteous to remember to welcome all of our newcomers. I'm absent-minded, but I'm glad to see you all on our message board. It's very encouraging, and I knew you were out there somewhere!
I feel the same way about the edits as you do. I consider myself an expert on the show, but find that I cannot notice the edits as readily as I thought I could! For the most part, they can't be whole scenes, but still I'd have thought I'd notice them.
I'm going to try a scene-by-scene comparison with a TV Land tape, and a DVD and see what I get!
Steve
Lolac 03-15-2004, 04:36 PM Steve, do it with the episode "Sally is a Girl." Huge edit there. There are others. I think some of these edits are very obvious. "October Eve" has a huge edit. "Washington vs. the Bunny" at the end. The whole tag scene was edited out. I am having a brain cramp and can't think of others right now, but if you watch them side by side, you will really notice them.
Lolac
Carrie 03-16-2004, 09:46 AM I'd like to add "The Cat Burglar" to my list of favorites. I watched it last night and laughed so hard! I'd forgotten how funny that episode was, especially when Rob was looking for the bullet in Laura's jewelry box, then trying to find the thief without making any noise. LOL!

I'm puzzled. I just watched "Sally is a Girl" and the tag scene at the end of "Washington vs. the Bunny", and while parts of "Sally is a Girl" seemed less familiar than other parts, I'm sure I've seen the whole thing. Same with the tag scene of the bunny episode.
I know that there's no way that TV Land shows all 25-26 minutes of every episode, so all I can figure is that I'm remembering those deleted parts from when I used to watch the show in syndication prior to the existence of TV Land and the current 20-21 minute half-hour. It must have been syndicated almost immediately after it ended its prime time run because I recall watching it during the day when I was a kid (mid- to late-60s), back when a half an hour only had a few minutes of commercials.
That's why it irks me that TV Land claims to preserve our "television heritage" when they continually hack up our favorite shows to cram in more ads, but I guess that's just the way it is now. It's too bad.

You're exactly right, Pentimento. You did see those scenes when you saw them when you were a kid. I remember vividly some of the scenes that were cut out from long ago. In "Sally is a Girl," Laura has a conversation with Buddy about whether or not it is appropriate for a girl to call on a man. That entire conversation is cut out on TV Land. Also a couple of small lines here and there. I used to have all TDVDS episodes on video tape that I taped from Nick at Nite and TV Land. I watched them all the time before the DVDs came out. I practically had them memorized, so the differences in the uncut version are very obvious to me. In "October Eve," when Laura and Sally are in the gallery and a man and woman are looking at the painting, most of the conversation between the man and woman talking about the painting is cut out. Yet I, like you, remember seeing those in the past. It's amazing.

Pentimento 03-16-2004, 11:42 AM Well then, Lolac, thank goodness for the DVDs, right? It's so great to be able to watch the shows we love and remember so well, uncut (and with no commercials!), anytime we feel like seeing them. I also like the "extras" -- the photo galleries, commentary and original commercial spots -- included on the DVDs. The DVD is a wonderful invention. :)

JudgeGarth 04-07-2004, 06:45 PM I like almost all of 'em, but my favorites are these ones with Jerry Helper: "A Vigilante Ripped My Sports Coat," "All About Eavesdropping." and "Love Thy Other Neighbor."
Also deserving of mention is "Scratch My Car and Die." That one is so beautifully self-contained it would make a great one-act play.
Kristen 04-07-2004, 09:17 PM I can't believe I never posted on this thread! LOL! Here are my favorites (In no particular order, of course!)
"Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth"
"That's My Boy??"
"Never Bathe on Saturday"
"Where Did I Come From?"
"Oh How We Met on the Night That We Danced"
"100 Terrible Hours"
"My Blonde-Haired Brunette"
"Honeymoons Are For the Lucky"
There are probably more, but those come to mind right away. You can tell I'm a big fan of the flashback episodes, LOL.
calvertfan 04-08-2004, 03:03 AM Without thinking too hard of all I have seen and making a list, I'll just nominate one - "The Two Faces of Rob" :D I saw it last week and almost died laughing!
algebra74 05-29-2004, 02:43 PM "A Nice, Friendly Game of Cards"
hank18 05-29-2004, 04:19 PM Lots of votes for "Long Night's Journey..." so I'll add mine, too. Also "The Meershatz Pipe," "The Life and Loves of Joe Coogan," "All About Evesdropping," and, of course, "It May Look Like a Walnut."
Lolac 05-29-2004, 08:24 PM "Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth."
Lolac
Dorothys BestPal 05-29-2004, 08:43 PM I have to add one of my all time favorites- "Obnoxious,Offensive,Egomaniac, etc".

David VP 05-31-2004, 01:11 AM I find the following episodic adventures featuring Rob & Laura & Company have a very high "rewatchability factor". And, thanks to the excellent Digital Versatile Discs from Image Entertainment & Paul Brownstein Productions (and Mr. Douglas Denoff), they can be watched till the cows come home with no worries about degradation. :) ..........
"A Nice, Friendly Game Of Cards" -- "Cheating! In the suburbs!"
"Punch Thy Neighbor" -- "Robert Petrie wrote a show ... Supposed to be funny ho-ho-ho ... Look how far this man has gotten ... Writing shows that are really rotten!"
"All About Eavesdropping" -- "ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE!" .... "Right!"
"Harrison B. Harding..." -- "You mean Evelyn weighed 90 pounds?" .... "YOU REMEMBERED!"
"Never Bathe On Saturday" -- "Don't toy with me, you saucy wench."
"Ray Murdock's X-Ray" -- "Rob, go to your room!!"
"The Impractical Joke" -- "Sometimes the lead and terminal wires come unhooked -- or "loose", as we say."
And so many more ......... :)
algebra74 05-31-2004, 02:14 PM I agree that there are some episodes that I can watch endlessly, as David VP stated. There are some episodes, however, that I can only watch one or two times, without becoming bored with the episode. Some of these include the Suprise episode (can't think of the actual name) and "The Impractical Joke". I think that these episodes have a one-time viewing factor, due to the fact of "suprise" in these episodes that repeated viewing degrades the original viewing. What do you think?

I have to agree with you algebra74 that some episodes in sitcoms have a one-time viewing appeal, although IMO, that's not the case with TDVDS. Still, there are some DVDS episodes I want to watch more times than others. I guess you could call it "rewatichiblity." Some episodes have a high "rewatchibilty factor" while others not as much. It's not to say we don't enjoy all 158 DVDS episodes, just that we prefer to watch some more often than others.
Kurt
David VP 05-31-2004, 09:05 PM I disagree strongly with algebra regarding "Impractical Joke" (despite its "surprise" factor). I find that ep. very "rewatchable".
The more I go through the seasonal DVDs, I'm noticing more eps. in my "rewatchable often" category coming from the 1st and 2nd seasons, rather than S.3 or 4. But, ALL the eps. are good IMO. :)
cathyg321 01-01-2010, 06:05 AM Off the top of my head, I nominate: "Coast to Coast BIG mouth." The scene is Alan's office with the wigs on the styrofoam heads when Laura came in there was hilarious. I don't know how Carl managed to do that without cracking up... totally!
PGood97041 08-01-2010, 01:47 AM Love that I'm finally getting to do this, pick my top The Dick Van Dyke Show episodes!
I knew I couldn't do just a top 10, but I was surprised how easy the top 20 I came up with were for me to pick. As many people have said, I like virtually all of the remaining episodes, but these were the ones I really loved. They're in no particular order, but they do have common themes, as I'll point out at the end:
It May Look Like a Walnut
The Man from My Uncle
Coast to Coast Bigmouth
My Blonde-Haired Brunette
Never Bathe on Saturday
The Curious Thing About Women
October Eve
Long Night's Journey Into Day
Oh How We Met The Night That We Danced
Where Did I Come From?
The Attempted Marriage
That's My Boy?
Pink Pills and Purple Parents
A Word A Day
A Bird in the Head Hurts
Girls Will Be Boys
Go Tell the Birds and the Bees
The Plots Thicken
The Curse of the Petrie People
All About Eavesdropping
----
OK, obviously there's the "Mary" group; probably my favorites of all-time.
There's the "flashback" group; very memorable, provided depth.
There's the "Ritchie" group; loved watching Rob and Laura try to figure things out.
There's the "parents" group; who can't identify with dealing with the folks?
There's the "spoofs", "Walnut" and "Uncle"; "Walnut" the most memorable show they did, to me.
And I just threw in "Eavesdropping" to get to 20, but although the intercom is a stock plot nowadays, there was great emotion between the couples.
Anyway, I found it odd that while I loved Buddy, Sally, Mel, Alan and "the office", and there was a scene or two set there in virtually every show, and I loved that Rob's work life was a big part of the show, none of the "just office" eps cracked my list. I think they were all GOOD episodes (loved the jokes), but they got pushed down for me by the great "Mary" eps, and the flashback eps, and the family eps!!!!
falseeyelashes 08-26-2010, 11:49 AM I like making top tens for these things. So, my top 10 episodes are:
Laura's Little Lie
Ghost of a Chantz
Honeymoons are for the Lucy
Never Bathe on a Saturday
That's My Boy???
Oh How We Met the Night That We Danced
The Night the Roof Fell In
Where Did I Come From?
October Eve
My Part Time Wife
