Jinny left her father’s house where her “friends” had just ambushed her into thinking that she herself was an alcoholic. She knew that she could control what she did so she didn’t pay any attention to it. As she left, she made sure to slam the door shut just to prove to them, that they pissed her off really bad. She couldn’t believe what they just did, and what they thought of her. She knew it wasn’t true, but even her best friend Magda was in on it. There was nothing she could do. But she didn’t want to go into rehab, so she just left. Sandra told Magda to stay there and not to leave, but she just couldn’t help seeing her best friend think that she did this just to hurt her, so she got into her car, and followed Jinny. She knew that if anyone could talk to her, and try to help without anyone else, it would be her; I mean they are best friends. She followed her into Anchorside. Jinny ordered a drink, and Magda thought that they could work this out without bringing alcohol into the mix. She went up to Jinny.
“Well if it’s not Magda coming to my rescue,” Jinny said, “you know what Mag I don’t need to be saved.”
“I’m not here to try to save you Jinny; I’m here to talk to you. You left your dad’s house really upset, and I wanted to make sure that you didn’t need anything. Because I am here for you to talk to,” Magda said.
“Why so you can tell me how much I still need to go to rehab? I don’t need anyone trying to save me. I’m not in trouble. I know exactly what I’m doing. So you know what Mag, how about you just leave me alone right now, because I’m still really pissed off at you. You were supposed to be my friend and stick up for me, especially when I get ambushed like that. I mean, I would stick up for you. But hold on, we all know Mag doesn’t make mistakes, right? Isn’t that what I’m supposed to say? That you’re perfect?”
“Jinny, you know that I’m not perfect. I make mistakes just like everyone else. But this is a problem. You need to get help. You drink too much and too often. You were drunk today when you got paged and came into work. You really were. And I know that I’m supposed to be your friend, but Jinny, that’s why I’m doing this. I want to help you. I want my partner back. I want my best friend back.”
“Well maybe you just want a different partner. You think that I’m this and I’m that. Well I’m not. I’m not this perfect person. I make some mistakes I will admit, but I do not need help and I do not need to go to rehab. I can handle my own problem, which it’s not even. I don’t have a drinking problem. So Mag, why don’t you save your time, and just leave?”
“Because I’m not walking out on my best friend, like she did to me tonight. We were trying to help you. We think that you need help. So you left your intervention and came here so you could do what? Drink. I’m telling you Jinny, I think that you need help. If you won’t do it for me, and you won’t do it for yourself, can’t you at least do it for your family; or those of us who do really care about you, and don’t want to see you hurt?”
“Mag, I know that you are trying to help me out, but you don’t understand that I don’t need any help. To me, it feels like whatever I do, it’s not good enough for anyone………Long Pause……….. You know I never really told you about what happened when I was little with my mom. I think that I always knew that she was going to kill herself, but I was just scared to tell my dad and my brothers. I was so scared when I found her. I loved her I really did, but is it so bad to now hate her because of what she did to our family? She is the reason that makes it so hard for me to get out of bed in the morning. Drinking actually calms that and at least that I will get out of bed for. You’re my best friend and no offense to you, but you are not even enough to make me what to get out of the bed in the morning.”
“See now Jinny, that’s a problem. There is no reason that you should not want to get out of bed in the morning. There is just not. You have a good job, and I thought that everything was going well with you and Theodore, but I don’t know. You don’t tell me anything anymore, and that scares me. I want to stay friends with you Jinny, but you need to get help. I’m only saying this because I love you. I really do love you. And I just want the old Jinny back.”
“You know what Mag; I think that I’m going to just go, because you never really knew the other Jinny. I drank the whole time you knew me. My dad had me drinking when I was 11. I was only 11 years old when he threw me my first beer and said that I could drink it. Do you know what it’s like for that to happen to you? Do you? To think that you’re dad made you the way you are today? I love my dad I really do, but I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if that night never would have happened. I’m really scared right now, because my mom killed herself when she was 36. I’m 36, and I’m really afraid right now…..short pause….. I don’t want to do the same thing, but I am so afraid. I got to go right now, before I totally lose it. Sorry Mag, for everything.”
“Jinny wait.”
SLAM.
Jinny got into her car and left. She didn’t know where she was going. All she knew is that she had to get out of there. Magda thought that she was crazy and she knew that she didn’t need help. She just didn’t want to be the only one thinking that she did. That’s what it was. It was just all a lie to get her to tell everyone else that they were right. I’ll show them, I just won’t be here any longer! A few minutes later she arrives at the Golden Gate Bridge, which was her favorite spot to hang out at where she knew that they would never look for her. She was so mad at all of them, for everything, that she just had enough of it. She wanted to call her dad to let him know that she was ok, but he was in on it too. There was no one that she could go to that wasn’t in on it. They all were. She just kept saying to herself that she can’t believe that her best friend betrayed her like that. She just totally turned on her. She wasn’t supposed to do that. They were supposed to be best friends. Didn’t she get that? That they were supposed to stick up for each other?
“I can’t believe Magda did this. She totally thinks that I am crazy. Well, I’m not crazy. I know what I’m doing. And I never did anything wrong. I don’t have a drinking problem. I can handle everything. I handled my mother’s death just fine. They didn’t care about that. They brushed that off. My dad caused it I know he did! But why? What could have been that bad that she wouldn’t want to live anymore?”
She knew that she had to call Magda that if she didn’t meet up with her to talk, she would do something that she totally regretted, and the only thing worse than rehab, was a hospital. So she called Mag.
“Mag, it’s Jinny, umm….I think that we need to talk…..I know, I’m sorry that I walked out on you….. I know I was wrong, but if I didn’t walk out, I would have said something that I would have regretted later. I know, and I said I’m sorry. There is a catch to meeting you….you can’t say anything about the intervention. One word, I’m gone and I will never come back. Got it? Ok, I’m at the Golden Gate Bridge, and Mag, please hurry.”
Several minutes went by for Jinny, which was like several hours for her. She didn’t know what was taking Mag so long, it seemed like forever. When she finally came, she saw someone in the car with her.
“Who is with you Mag?”
“It’s just CD. She was really worried about you and we were talking when you called, so I just thought it would be ok to let her come.”
“No Mag that was not part of the deal. I’m out of here.”
“Jinny wait! Please Jinny.” Jinny ran to her car, and was not paying any attention while she attempted to open her door. She saw someone standing there and looked up to find CD.
“I was so worried about you Jinny. Why didn’t you call me? I was really worried. You know that I really care about you. What’s wrong? Mag tells me that something is going on with you that you don’t want to wake up in the morning? What is up with that Jinny? We are friends right? You’re not treating me like a friend right now. Tell me what’s going on.”
Jinny just looked at Mag in disbelief. She wanted to tell CD what was going on, she really did, but she didn’t see the point in making someone else worry about her. She didn’t need any help, she tried to convince herself. But she decided it was up to her whether she wanted to tell her or not.
“Nothing is wrong, CD. Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. I just needed to get out of there, get some air. I’m fine I really am.”
“Jin, you’re lying to me. Friends aren’t supposed to lie. Mag wanted to tell me, but I thought that it would be better coming from you. Are you going to tell me what’s going on?”
“I’m telling you CD nothing is wrong. I’m really fine. I just needed to get out. I needed my space.”
“CD….she doesn’t think that she has a probl………”
“Mag, I think that you did enough damage for one day. I don’t think that you need to do anything else to prove that you know everything. I know that you think that you are perfect, but that doesn’t mean that everyone around you has to be. We all know that I’m not perfect. Jinny’s a big screw up. That’s what everybody thinks. I know that they do. And you know what, I don’t see it that way.”
“Jinny, why didn’t you tell me. I know that you are hurting right now. We only did the int…..”
“Not one word about that! Magda promised! I swear if you say it I will leave…..you will never see me again. I’ll make sure of that!”
“Jinny I think that you need help. You need to go find someone to talk to since you wont talk to Mag, and you won’t talk to me. I think that you need help. If I promise not to say anything about tonight and I don’t insist that you go to rehab, will you come to my house or somewhere were we can talk? I think that we need to talk about some things that were brought up tonight.”
“Well what is wrong with right here?”
“Too many things that could happen here. Just come to my house. Please Jinny, it would really help me understand.”
“Fine, but I have to stop at my apartment first. I need to get something.”
“What do you need Jinny. Anything that I can get for you?”
“Umm……..no I think that I should just get it.”
“You’re not drinking tonight Jin, I want to talk to you sober. Not this totally out of it girl, who has no idea who we are. I want to talk to the real Jinny. The Jinny inside of you.”
“CD, I know that you don’t know this, but if I don’t drink right now, I think that something bad will happen. I will make something bad happen. I swear to you.”
“No Jinny. We are not stopping at your apartment. I’m sorry. I can’t allow that to happen. Now lock your car up. You’re coming with us. Ok?”
“Fine. You know what, why don’t you just handcuff me and spare the trouble for yourselves. I think that you might spare disaster that way. I got to get something out of my trunk. Wait over by your car I’ll be right there.”
Magda and CD went over to Mag’s car while Jinny went into her trunk. I can’t believe that they think that I’m not going to drink. How stupid can they be? Jinny opened her trunk and found that she still had a bottle of vodka in there. She sank herself into her trunk slowly and opened the bottle. She didn’t know that CD was on her way over to make sure that she was ok. CD grabbed the bottle.
“This is just what I’m talking about Jinny. This you have to stop. You are addicted here. You think that you need this in order to calm yourself down, but you don’t. You don’t need any of it.”
CD threw the bottle as hard as she could onto the ground and Jinny got out of her trunk and fell to the ground. Magda ran over to see what was going on.
“What happened CD?”
“She was about to drink, I just had to stop her. This is so out of control so as it is.”
CD and Mag took Jinny and put her in the back of Mag’s car. She locked all the doors, and CD actually sat in the back with her to hold her down so that she couldn’t try to escape.
Let me go Mag! Don’t touch me CD! I mean it. Don’t touch me!”
“Jinny, this is for your own good. We will help you. We know you need it. Maybe you can help yourself too. We don’t want to lose you Jin. CD’s just trying to help, because, you need it. We don’t like the person you become when you drink. We want to help you get better. We love you.”
“There is this thing about being held against my will, it’s called kidnapping!”
“We aren’t kidnapping you, you agreed to come with us. You’re a good cop, even the caption thinks so. Just please Jin, let us help you. Please?”
“I don’t need help. I need to…..”
“Drink? If it wasn’t for CD here, you would have drank that vodka. I know you would have, Jin. Don’t you see?”
“Guys let me go. I will die before I go to rehab. I won’t live to see it. I just need a drink, so I can feel normal. Don’t you miss the old Jinny?”
“Yeah, Jin, that’s what we’ve been trying to tell you. Mag and I want the old Jinny back.”
Jinny reached into her leather jacket pocket and pulled out a small piece of glass, about palm size. She showed it to CD. CD flipped out.
“So Jinny, your saying that you will kill yourself?” asked CD.
“What are you talking about CD? What’s going on?” asked Mag.
At a stop sign, Mag looked back and saw the piece of glass in Jinny’s hand.
“Get it away from her CD! Otherwise, why are we doing this? She obviously doesn’t love us like we love her. Jinny will do what she wants anyway.”
“You two actually think that I would kill myself?”
“Jin, we know you’re in pain. That’s why I wanted CD to come. I figured between the two of us, something would click.”
“Mag roll down your window.”
Jinny took the piece of glass and threw it out the window.
“I can’t be like her.”
“Like who?” CD asked.
“My mom, I’m 36, and so was my mom when she killed herself. I can’t be like her!”
They arrived at CD’s house and both Mag and CD helped Jinny into the house. They took her into the bedroom and told her to lie down, and rest for a little. It would make her feel better. Minutes later, she was sound asleep or so they thought. Mag decided that they should stay with her, just to make sure she was ok. Jinny slowly reached into her pocked and pulled out a bag. Mag and CD noticed. Jinny turned on her side so they couldn’t see her, and opened the bag and put the contents into her mouth. CD went over.
“What’s in your mouth Jin?” CD asked.
Jinny didn’t answer. She then pulled out a bottle that looked like water. CD took the bottle and Jinny ran, but Magda stopped her.
“Stop it Jinny! I mean it! You must hate us so much that you don’t even want to help yourself or help us. We want to help you, but this addiction that you have on alcohol is going to kill you,” Mag stated.
“Spit them out Jinny! Mag help me here, we can’t let her take them!”
Mag and CD approached Jinny and carefully so that she wouldn’t try anything stupid.
“Jinny what do you have? We just want to help. If you don’t spit it out, you will be sorry,” Mag threatened.
When Mag and CD saw Jinny was not going to cooperate, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They each grabbed an arm and pulled them around her. Then the handcuffed her. Immediately Jinny spit them out. CD picked them out and showed them to Mag. Then opened the bottle which turned out to be vodka. The pills were drugs.
“Mag, maybe we should let her go. She obviously doesn’t want to be here. I already lost her to drinking. I don’t want to totally lose her!”
“Jinny where did you get these pills? Do you have any idea what they are or how much trouble that you could get in? You could lose your job! Is that what you want? To go to jail?”
“No Mag, I just want you to let me alone.”
“Where did you think that you would be if it wasn’t for Mag and me? Huh? You would be ****ing screwed! What if Mag and I just let you take those pills? You could have gotten arrested, Jin, don’t you see? You’re like family to us, and we just want what’s best for you! I love you Jinny.”
“Your right CD. If it wasn’t for you, I would have either drank, took those pills, or the real reason I went to the Golden Gate Bridge. I do love you, I love you both. I just don’t want to go to rehab. Can’t you just understand that? Can you guys help me without taking me to rehab?”
“Jin, I’m glad that you’re asking Mag and I to help you. It really means a lot to me, and I’m sure that it means a lot to Magda too! But, I don’t know if we can do this, not without professional help.”
“Well then, forget it. I’m not going to rehab. I told you that. So spare me the trouble and let me go!”
“Jinny, I think what CD means is that we can help you just not as good as rehab. You do know we will still go through all the same steps right?”
“I know Mag, it’s just something about rehab that scares me.”
“Thanks Jinny. For letting us help you.”
“No Mag, thank you and CD for saving me. Before we go to the first step, do you want to know why I went to the GGB?”
“You were going t jump, weren’t you?” CD asked.
“Yes, I was. But then I remembered the look on my face when I found my mom, and I didn’t want to see the same look on you two. I know that you two love me, and that’s why you fought so hard to help me, so thank you. For everything.”
One month later….
“Hi my name is Jinny, and I’m an alcoholic.”
